EP37 - $3500 Catalina 30 BOAT WORK Sealing & REPLACING Windows

  • In this episode I seal one of the main salon windows and replace the port-light in the head. The salon window had to be done a few times before I found a solution that worked. I didn't want to try to fix all of them until I found a solution that worked. Then I move on to replacing the port-light in the head of our Catalina 30 sailboat. I love doing boat work because it transforms our cheap sailboat into a nice little yacht.
    Check out the rest of my videos below, Cheers! - Andy

    Hey Andy,
    I'm your neighbor across the marina in C14. I have a C445. I started with a C27 and kept getting bigger until this one; the last boat. The Catalina 30 is one of the best ever built by Butler & Douglas. They sail great. I started with the C27, then C38(Sparkman&Stephens), Jeanneau 42i, and finally the Catalina 445. I understand your concerns with build quality, but they are mass produced. The best thing about Catalina yachts is that there is a huge owner base and they are easily improved upon. Worst boat I have owned was the Jeanneau. Built in France and a nightmare to work on. Keep working on the 30. You're doing a great job. Love the videos and one of the these days our paths may cross.

      Bill, I’d love to come see your boat and meet you. For some reason I love Catalina’s and I have yet to see a 445. I love the 42’ but I’d love to see yours. Anyway, I hope to cross paths sooner than later. Cheers! Andy

    Trial and error, success often depends on it. Leaks on a boat is bad, it effects electrical, makes mildew, smells and ruins the interior. Good Job Andy.

    Ok Bud, totally dig your videos and your buddy who I met in riverside west marine. I am a Roofing company. You need to use a silicone base caulking that will absolutely seal everyone of those windows and you could absolutely do it even without pulling those windows out. Feel free to contact me. I’d love to help you. My boat is in Huntington Harbor.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 5 měsíci

      Rad. Thanks Brett. Yeah you’re probably talking about Mark from @keeldragger. Super cool dude.
      You’re probably right about silicone but the windows still need to come out in order to seal the window sill. I don’t like the idea of having such a big area for water intrusion in those sills.
      I’ve heard that Dow Corning 795 would be the best but I’ve been dumb and stubborn trying ”marine” sealant.
      As for the larger windows on the cabin top; the one in the video doesn’t leak but two of the other five have small leaks. I’ll get to those eventually.
      Thanks for watching and the comment. I’m always open for good advice and help.
      Cheers! 🤙🏼

    awesome vid. i liked getting to see the things you tried that didn't work too.
    great idea making those little windows open. it might not be quite as much airflow as adding a lewmar hatch, but i think that having more places that the air can get in/out from could give you better overall air circulation. also if for some reason you need less airflow you can just open 1 window instead of 2. and if you need more airflow you can always replace the other windows with ones that can open. and of course like you said, more deck space

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah I think I’ll replace the starboard forward port light first. Then I’ll have matching opening ports all the way forward. I’m not totally against adding a Lewmar hatch somewhere down the line. I have 2 or 3 used Lewmar hatches waiting to install but then I thought; if I cut a hole in my deck and a used hatch leaks, I’m gonna kick myself. So if I do, it’ll be a new one. 🤙🏼

      @@sailingsole hahaha oh shit, ya, it definitely would suck to do that.
      Hmmm maybe there's a good way to test to make sure they are water tight...
      you know, I bet you could use some cheap plywood or OSB and make a little box that's just big enough to install 1 of those hatches on. So basically you have a sealed box that you can coat the outside with something relatively cheap like an exterior latex paint, and on the top of the box you can install 1 of those hatches. Then you can put something like a bunch of sand or flour inside the box. Then to test for leaks you can spray the shit out of it with a hose or even a power washer, then wipe down the hatch and the top of the box with a towel to remove the remaining water, and open up the hatch to see if any water got inside.
      You could even get a couple packets of jello/kool-aid/Gatorade/Flavor Aid and mix it into the sand you put inside the box, that way if it leaks during the test the sand will change color and you would be able to see that right away even before opening the hatch.
      I bet you could build the box for maybe 30-40 bucks with cheap materials from any hardware store. Shit, maybe even less than that because most big hardware stores will have a selection of off cuts from when they cut boards for people and the customers don't want the pieces they don't need. And they usually have some paints marked down because they messed up the color. Add in a few packs of kool-aid or whatever for like $2.
      I think it would be a good way to test your used hatches and see if you really do need to spend hundreds on a new one or not.
      And it could be a pretty good video: how to test USED Boat Hatches CHEAP! Will it leak???

    Please don't ever use caulk. It works for a while but when it fails nothing will stick to it and cleaning it is almost impossible. For that hole in the hull just use thickened epoxy, it wouldn't have changed opening size. Keep plugging away, we have a 79 that we are running on for 6 years. Love the boat.

      Thanks for the tip. I used Loctite Marine silicone sealant. Hopefully that works. I don’t plan on taking that window out so it should be fine and it is certainly better than nothing 😂. Thanks for watching!

    I'm a little surprised the butyl tape didn't work the first time. Maybe adding multiple layers would have helped. I made the mistake of replacing the portlights on my old Tartan 27. They didn't leak before my project :-(. The prior install was with butyl and man that stuff was hard to remove. The silicone caulk (said with a hard "L") that I used did not work well.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah multi layers of butyl tape is a good idea. The cauLk I used was just to seal the sill as it was completely open for any dagum thing that wanted to wander in there. It’s still a work in progress but pretty good for now. 🤙🏼

    until next time sikaflex 591i is your friend. 291i is below waterline. between you´ll fit a bead of epoxy with microfiber. Put the mix (5:1 mix) in a plastic bag and cut one of the corners, then press out in the void. pending on the temprature outside you can assess if you need a fast activation or slow activation time. If you choose fast, activater you then got a deadline before getting dry.
    For butal I´d prefer to use that below waterline, becasue butal have a shorter lifespan than sikaflex.

    Do you think that method would work with the standard windows 2 I like your idea of sealing the hulll when you take the window out and the rubbery clay tape on the outside. So what do you think would that work just as fine for the fixed windows that method?

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yeah I think it will work with the fixed windows and just about any other windows. The clay tape is called Butyl tape. 🤙🏼

    Fiberglass, and epoxy is used to make other kinds of boat repairs. You are working on a window, so what you are talking about is not something I would expect to hear.
    Did you see exactly from where the water was entering your boat?
    If the water is coming inside from only 1 window then I think something is wrong with how the window was installed.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Maybe you missed the issue for the fiberglass and epoxy. The layers of the cabin top are exposed at the window seal when you take the window out. I was going to glass it shut to keep water out. Instead I used caulking. Yes, I knew where the water was coming from.
