Sailed my 1988 C&C 30 from Vancouver to Alaska then back down to Santa Barbara and then across the Pacific to New Zealand. Then across the Indian to Cape Town. Not bad for a boat designed for the Great Lakes!
!n 1987, I purchased a new C&C 30 Mark 2 hull number 122 while living in Toronto. Brought it with me when I transfered to the U.S. and kept in at Dillions Creek Marina in Toms River NJ and sailed it on Barnegat Bay. Sold it in 2000. We spent every weekend on it. Loved every minute!
When people talk C&C 30 they talk the Mk I. There was no need to go into the others, there is one 30, the others rode coat tails. The C&C 30 MkI needed no changes. It also isn't a larger 27. It loves 20 kts...when everyone else is heading home mine is heading out. I've sailed it it 54 kts (recorded by Halifax traffic) solo... they tracked me. If they told me to take it across the Atlantic tomorrow I wouldn't bad an eye. 15 years on this one and about 40000 charted and logged nautical miles on it. When we vacation on it I'm still solo, because no one touches a thing. The Mk II and Mega are no where near the boat. Neither is a Pearson 30, Bristal 30. As for the Alberg 30, they track Ok, good in sea, but won't run hard out of weather...and wet. Also slow and bitchy down wind. I can stomp most 33-35 upwind in 20 it's with everything up. My main is 12 ounce, working jib 11 ounce, 135 Genoa 8 òunce. I've sailed on just about every 30 on the go...they may be pretty, but they are not as stiff. I fix, sail and repair them, engines as well. A retired doc, retired at 39 and sailed ever since. As for survey...I'm harder on inspection than any surveyor I've ever met. The 30 Mk I wont race unless she gets her 20 kts....then she will stomp. She's a sea boat and one has crossed the North Atlantic with 3 major storms on the nose. You didn't include it because you don't know any better. You know it, I know it. Nice read on the C&C photoablum site.
Right on. Nice report from a knowledgeable and experienced owner. Thanks for sharing this. I think I watched videos on your CZcams channel before I bought my own 1981 C&C 30 Mk. 1, and they were a factor in my purchase decision!
One thing that has disappointed me a bit on my own example (compared with the custom-built, cold-molded sloop that it replaced) is its light air performance. We show our heels to most boats up to 35 feet or so once the wind gets above 8 knots or so. Below that windspeed however, we get passed by a lot of lighter and smaller boats.
I bought mine because I wanted a weatherly, solid boat, and got that, but once the wind really peters out, you will get where you are going faster by just turning on the iron genoa than by trying to eke out the last know of boatspeed with everything flying. Don't get me wrong, these are fast boats in the right conditions, and handle beautifully - they are responsive to helm and sail trim, and tack on a dime.
I've always admired the CandC and thank you for the commentary. If we stay in the confines of 27 to 33 you will have endless material. And in the time frame of 1970 to 1990 the true Golden Era of sailing for your everyday man. One of my personal favorites and I've owned is the Pearson 10m cannot say enough about Bill Shaw's designs
I like my Canadian made Ticon 30.... heavier than c-c and 11' beam, over 6' of headroom down below........only about 35 made ...so not a lot of people know about them...and stable and fast , I often give my friend in their Beneateau 33 a proper view of my stern ..... even with their folding prop...
Absolutely in love with my 1984 C&C 29-2. Handles, performs and accommodates. You can see drone footage of it in my videos.
I had that boat as well, loved it to death, could damn near sail directly into the wind. Easy to singlehand. Fast, but with decent accommodations. My only complain was it was a bit tender, and didn't traverse the short chop of the Chesapeake Bay well..... Also less than ideal accommodations for my then new and growing family.
@@bradkuether3561 same, growing family
I absolutely love the C&C 30! Thanks for making this video!
Man, I love your videos, short, sweet and to the point! And super informative. I’m looking to get back into sailing one day soon, on a budget, and all of the info in all of your videos is invaluable. Subscribed! (And I don’t do that often.)
YES my fave boat. Glad you made this second video explaining your thoughts.
I had no idea Canada was so big in the sail boats in my early life. I am a 71 model
I really enjoy your video's they are very informative and scratch my history interests as well.
Thanks you give great information its patently obvious your passion for sailing
You forgot to mention the other c&c 30.. the MEGA 30 !!! People either love or hate it, but regardless it is a performer that you can easily trailer anywhere. Kind of like c&c's version of a MacGregor on steroids. Lots of compromises with that many design constraints, but i picked one up recently and could not be more impressed.
Very nice video. Allows me to learn so many things. Here in Brazil I used to sail a 1974 Ranger 29 (Gary Mull).
O renewed she completely in 2009, new sails and a new Yanmar. Great boat for me.
Bless you for your encouraging informative videos
Always look forward to your vids! Thanks
Your insights are appreciated!
So at 4:39 you are talking about after race gatherings on a C&C 30 and showing a Catalina 30..... Which strangely enough is shown in my marina in Maryland. Had the photographer walked two more steps out on the pier and taken that picture, my Catalina 320 would be in the background...... I see Afternoon Delight every weekend on my way out to my pier finger. What a strange thing to find......
Good info and love the jazz hand into!
Jazz hands cracks me up every time.
These are really great videos thanks!!
I own a 1981 C&C 32 MKII with a centerboard and I absolutely love it. Extremely solid boat that can take anything I throw at it. Would love to see a video on the 32 since I haven't been able to find much on it. Love all your videos! keep em comin!
The 32 is one of the best kept secrets. Accessibility to just about everything, massive head room, long berths, spacious cockpit and loves heavy seas. All around solid!
Ok. Ill start watching again... thanks!
I stumbled across your channel and, wow, so many memories. I worked at C&C Yachts in Niagara on the Lake in the early 1980's for about five years!
You probably built my 1981 C&C 30 Mark 1 then. Mine has a very poorly designed propane locker, which was basically just a fibreglass bin attached to the underside of the deck moulding before it was attached to the hull. The locker lid was then just cut out of the (balsa cored) seat material, and not set up with proper drainage the way the seat lockers were. So if the lid got water penetration (as mine did), repairing and resealing it proves to be a nightmare. This is the only significant design/build fault that I found with my own example, which came with a very nice 2 cylinder, 15 HP Yanmar diesel.
Mine also came set up from the factory with a wheel and binnacle. The binnacle makes for a nice mounting location for the compass, autopilot and chartplotter, BUT the cockpit was basically designed for a tiller, with the traveller just forward of the wheel,, and no cutouts abeam of the binnacle. This means that skipper has to step up and over the cockpit benches to get around the binnacle to access the main or genoa sheets. This makes tacking "interesting" when sailing single-handed.
Just sold my 82 mk1 for $15K. However it had a bow thruster, refrigeration, diesel heat and rebuilt rudder gearbox, etc.
Now you need to talk about why the C&C 33 is the best 33-footer ever, especially the Mark I, which according to my personal taste is much prettier than the Mark II. It would also present an opportunity to talk about how the 33 came about as a racer/cruiser version of the 3/4 tonner, which was the first design by Rob Ball. My understanding is that the 3/4 tonner was such a success that customers demanded a racer/cruiser version, and the rest is history.
Thanks for all the good work you do. You are among my "top 5" favorite sailing channels.
the 33 mark 1 is also one of C&C's most attractive designs - possibly the best ever.
i sailed a C&C27 mk.111 for years then sailed the ontario 32 for a bunch of years both great boats
Love this channel
Tim, thank you for this vid!!!
C&C30 Mk1 hull #26 here. (1972).
If you are ever in the west GTA area, we race Tuesday/Thursday......jump aboard!
Don't tempt me! I'll drive up there for a good race! Spinnaker?
Would love to hear his take on the Kerie' Elite 30. Owned one and raced it for years but could never get the boat to sail to it's rating. My appeals that the cast iron keel vs a lead keel fell on deaf ears of the local PHRF raters since the weight was identical. The boat was very tender and in flat water with winds under 10 we did OK. Anything more than that we were sailing for fun. BTW -- I guy had a Omega 36 (I believe made in Sweden) that owned us in any sort of wind. The boat could literally walk through our lee...more than a little demoralizing.
Could you do a post on keels, fin, long, cutaway forefoot versions. What to look for when inspecting. When to know it needs to be rebedded. What Differences between bolt-on and encapsulated. What to expect on keel longevity when buying a boat more than 20-30 years old. Etc, etc, etc,. Thanks. I think your channel is the best when discussing top 5, top 10, best cruiser, worse sailor, etc. Been sailing since the mid 80s, but still learning a thing or two from your channel.
You’re awesome. So much information. I’m going to support on Patreon.
Thank you! If you have a request please let me know!
Loving your content and learning so much. Could you do a series or episode on boats made for adventure/cruising maybe starting at the hi end of things with something like the Garcia Exploration 45 or Skip Novacs boats. I love the Hunter HC 50.
Great channel. Really enjoyed the Alberg episode. How about the Cape Dory?
Wife and I daysail a CD30 cutter, plan B. Working up to US Gulf Coast cruising.
I love my Dufour 31 which is rock solid build and does 7 knots with 3Bft wind. Very spacious and stable and good head hight om 1.92m. Keel is laminated to the hull, so low risk for loosing it.
Hold on a minute….the first C&C 30 was the venerable “Redwing 30”. C&C design built by hinterhoeller.
True. But the redwing is yet another 30. Tooooo many 30sssssss!!!
And Hinterholler's Niagara 31 was a great follow-up. 😉
The C&C 29 (mk1) is a very similar boat, but with a quarter berth. Its essentially the best of the 27 and the 30 combined. It could be a great episode to compare the 27, both 29 variants, and both 30 variants. They are all a lot of boat for the money these days!
Finally a boat review dude who knows what he is talking about. None of this "Crealock 37, a nice mini cruiser" nonsense.
Hey thanks for including my boat! Windward - the blue Mk 1. Not shown is the original plaid upholstery inside!
Thank you so much for having such a beautiful example of this boat!
Raced on a C&C Redwing 30 for many years. Less than 200 made, but a great boat
I enjoy your "Everything" vids. I would like to see more "racing" vids. Win, lose or draw, tell us why you are reaching or tacking. IDK but those vids teach me something. You say that I'll learn more by a day of racing than I'll learn by a week of cruising. I believe that! Thank you for your content on YT.
Agreed. I'd love to but it's super hard to be captain, camera person, and compete in a race. If I had a dedicated camera person I may be able to make it work. I'll try this summer
Great series on the 30' boats...
Have you thought about an episode on Mirage. They are pretty slick. Just got an 1989 mirage 29. They went to a French design and I'll say I'm happy for a first boat.
Absolutely love your channel! You seem like a dude I would go sailing with anytime.
If you're near, I always want to go sailing!
@@LadyKSailing unfortunately I'm to far away from you.
@@LadyKSailing the same is true for me! … and also a bit far from Germany. Too bad. IN the eighties I was living not too far away from you north of Buffalo, I got to sail Lake Ontario then for once at least on a beautiful summer day. Nice experience and also the first time I was at the helms of a real yacht. I really hope to meet you one day in person! Cheers from Frankfurt.
Would love to have you do a special on Corsair & Dragonfly.
I used to sail a CS 33 which was a great boat in this range
yes, CS 33's may have been the best-build and best equipped sloop made in Canada during the "golden age" when the early C&C' and CS's were being built. That was my go-to boat when I was looking for a cruiser, but couldn't find one on the used market that I could afford. I "settled" for a carefully maintained 1981 C&C 30 Mk 1 with a factory-fitted Yanmar, and have been more than satisfied with it.
Balso cored hull are a deal breaker. Seen a C&C 40 with rotten core loose it’s keel.
Where did you see this? Any documentation?
@@allanrheaume5549- At Handy Boatworks in Falmouth-Foreside Maine in 1982.
C&C built the 30 in Rode Island I 1982..
Once again, super nice presentation
as you are asking for proposals- I would like your opinion about all I need to know about the HR 42E (I bought one a year ago 1981 build Ketch Version Hull No8)- thank you and greetings from Austria to Canada
Awesome! I have a Beneteau First 235 that I think punches above its class. I would be curious to see an episode on 20-25' trailerable pocket cruisers.
Just saw the new video. Awesome man! :D
Nice! It can be include in this episode the Hallberg Rassy Misil II. It’s a legendary boat from 70’s.
While I appreciate you showcasing older boats which are in a reasonable price range you should also include how to inspect or what a survey should look for in an older boat
I'll say something about that. I have a C&C 30, 1976, I did a refit in 2007, full deal. I'm pretty handy and know guys that are handier. After it was done I had a guy who is a marine architect and a marine engineer do the survey. He told me if I ever want to sell the boat to let him know. When I bought the boat it had a survey....from a US Coast Guard Retiree....I had it trucked to my yard for the refit. I wouldn't take it across the harbour. I'll tell you what, you want a survey have a proper survey and not one of these guys that took an evening course. I don't protest to be an engineer, but anything I do on the boat is over engineered....that has included rigging, chain plates, portholes etc....guess what I kept...the atomic 4 ...apparently it doesn't blow up, it just pushes the boat at 6 kts and has for 46 years. I've put over 50000 nm on the boat single handed and banged her through 6 meter seas on a few occasions, when it was less prudent to run for land into shallow water. I didn't buy the boat by accident, I knew what I was getting.
Your daughter does a great intro! :)
C&C 30 is a good boat, I have had plenty of experience with C&C but not even close to the best 30 ever made. I’m talking about the MK1 but I have sailed the MK2 also.
CANUSA was originally from up your way. I sailed on her in Kema, TX years ago. Did you ever see her?
Love your videos!! Thank you for putting them up. How many times have you bottomed out in Mitchell's Bay? Lolol
That's my boat at 7:42, I'm curious as to where you got this picture from? Also got to say you'll be hard pressed to find a Mk II for 20 grand, all are over 30 grand.
Love the show, any chance on doing a segment on the C&C Landfall, thanks!
How’s Lady K? When is the next adventure cruise? Who’ll be with you? Windsor to Caribbean was great. Looking forward to the next adventure.
I just bought a Valiant 37 Esprit. Together we will live in Wiarton, Ontario. I love your vids and would love to see your take on the Esprit.
Bob Perry told me it is one of his all time favourite boats.
Getting warmer, Thursday night racing would be interesting, What we need to know... carry-on
Late bloomer here. I'm 62 and have taken an interest in sailing. I really enjoy your channel and I've learned quite a bit in a short period of time. What do you recommend for a beginner? My wife and I want standing room and a weekend sailboat. We live in Florida. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
What is your opinion of Water length to OAL differences? Looking at yt videos I see other channels that make the point that 30ft boat with 20ft waterline means you are paying for a 30ft boat with a smaller living area... the water line being the actual living area. My question is this, what difference does this make in how it sails?
proud owner of a 1969 C C redwing 30!
I am the proud owner of hull #130.
... Cheers...
Seems you showed a couple of Catalina’s instead of the C&C as representative shots.
For safety and the ability to cross oceans I would prefer the Rason 30.
Another great informational video. Thanks you have shown me 30 foot is like camping in a tent. Will do that with guys to kill a bull. But not my wife she is more like really.... not a hater just facts.
You have a few Catalina 27's photos in there as well... Not a C&C 30. That said, you are learning, you videos are improving.
Did you say salon? Well, I guess you do have a nice hair cut. All of my boats had saloons. Granted that doesn’t sound ‘oh soooo POSH’, but it is more enjoyable for drinks and socializing than waiting around for your hair to be done.
I got my C&C 30MK1 as my first sailboat, to both learn to sail and to learn how to work on a boat. It was completely gutted with no cabinetry and the Atomic 4 in pieces, in cardboard boxes. It has served the purpose incredibly well and I love taking her out for a solo day sail whenever I can. However, I retire in two years and want to circumnavigate and the 30MK1 is not a liveaboard boat. It would be great for a weekend or maybe a week, but the lack of amenities (adequate head, shower, refrigeration space, etc) would, in my opinion, prevent it from even being used for wintering over in the Bahamas. Love the boat, but want bigger later.
What kind of boat would you like for crossing oceans? I just retired and I'm thinking about similar goals.
@@DavidSmith-fj6fx I don't know yet. After 50+ years of collecting things and living in ever bigger houses, I can minimize, but only so far. I'm thinking 50-55 foot range, but who knows.
Hi there, can you make a vídeo about beneteau 42cc please.
Are Bayliner 30 foot sailboat any good?
I’d like to see a video on Tartan yacht since I own a 31
Hi Tim, we just bought our first sailboat this past year.....a 1990 Sabre 38 MKII. Would you do a segment on Sabre? Why did they stop making sailing yachts in 09'? Are these considered "blue water" boats? We are brand new to sailing and have learned so much from your channel. Would love to host you in annapolis sometime, if you are interested! We just had the entire boat retrofitted over this past summer.
Ooooo sabre good idea!!!! I love me a sabre!!!
Nice video I have a mk1 30
It would be nice to a atomic 30
Don't forget the "prop shaft vs sail drive" .
“Post race arguments!” 🤣
In my personal opinion, the balsa core is a big thumbs dow...
what about the Mega, thinking of going to look at one local
I want to get a catalina 30 Mk II or III for Bahamas...is that crazy?
what about the S2, cs, and the goman express?
What's your thoughts on Oday 32cc
I'm afraid I must disagree. I owned an Olson 9-11s (a very rare 30 footer...only 26 made)for over 30 years. Designed by Carl Schumacher and built by Pacific Yachts in Calif, the Olson was 3k lbs lighter than a C&C,
Had the room of 35 footer and sailed like a Laser. She was a beast upwind and could out point any C&C. My wife and I sailed her all over the great lakes and it was a great racing boat. The huge cockpit was large enough for a crew of 6 and was a great location for evening cocktails. It was a blast to sail and she always got me home. Sadly, I had to sell her due to health reasons.
Boats are boats and we are bias. A great boat on the lakes may not be a great boat in the ocean. I get my lakes days and I get the days the waves take the wind out of the sails....I'll stick with my C&C 30....over a 35 MK 1 as well. She won't race worth shit in light air but give her 25 kts leave it all up and go.
C&C 30? Wow ....
Ten grand-US or CAN? Great report. TNX
Isn't that a Catalina at 4:19 ?
I caught that 2🤔
Excellent episode! Are you planning to go back to the Caribbean?
YES!!! Just a waiting game now :)
Best ever made? Naw! No way.
How about an episode on Trailered weekenders. ;)
Absolutely! Being a land locked lake sailor, this is one of the worst set of trade offs to try and navigate in boat research. Relatively few boats to actually see in person, combined with a size limit on my lake made this one of the most difficult decisions I ever made. I finally settled on a Fareast 26 but my lord, the brain damage involved was exhausting
@@bpftc I was looking into this as well, And I had no idea how extensive the options were.
What about the Corvette 31?
Hey Lady K... have you ever covered rod rigging? Is that negative? I've heard it's hard to find riggers who can still deal with it. True?
I'd love to. Just haven't needed it. The cable is cheaper
@@LadyKSailing But would you avoid it if buying a boat?
how about an episode on the Ericson 30+
What about the C&C Mega 30
What about the C&C Mega 30? ;)
the boat at 4:36 is not a C&C 30 - looks to be a Cataline
1985 O’day 26.
🤩✌️
Anything that helps you get $. I can’t help with $ so I’m helping you the best way I can ✌️
You missed the J30
You missed another one. A Sabre 30 series 2 or 3.
Your review of best 28s also left out the very well made Sabre 28. A comfortable cruiser and great club racer.
You don't seem to care for Maine boats
Thanks for the info
Likewise the boat at 10:44 is not a C&C 30
This time I have to disagree with the notion of smaller older boats. Must avoid! Sure they're cheap for new entrants but it seems the industry needs new chumps so they'd buy these off of the previous chumps who figured out what a mistake it was!!! In my personal belief and experience there are absolutely boats that become "too small, too boring, big mistake" very quickly ... Unless you're "loner sailor" sure, but I love the socializing aspect of the sport which you really struggle to do on older smaller boats!
