I have an Android Samsung Galaxy S 4, and I tried Sound Cloud, Easy Voice Recorder, and a few others, but they all left a hissing noise... Then I tried, "Hi-Q MP3 Recorder" and there's a setting under the "recording" tab, labeled "Mic selection", and from there, you can choose the "raw audio" selection, making your audio come out crystal clear when using the RODE SmartLav. Thank you, RODE... for saving me hundreds of dollars and providing awesome equipment!
We need an official app for Android. Performance is not stable even after you calibrate the gain every time before using it, you get audio clipping!. It is very disappointing.
Hi Jan, to make syncing your audio easier, make a clap which will create a spike in both audio tracks which you can use to synchronize your video & audio tracks.
For those, who still are having this problem, I use "Open camera" app (for android) and in settings -> video settings -> audio source -> choose "External mic". Now every time I record video using the "Open camera app", the video takes audio from the smartLav mic
You can. But for me, the sound quality isn’t quite as good. A lot of hissing and flatter tone. This works best being used as its own separate audio interface
I just got mine in the mail two days ago. I have tried many other mic on my iPhone. The smartlav is by far the best I have used. I has a great (I mean really great) sound, Thank you Rode for making this GREAT tool. Kim
What is the app that you use on your iphone with the mic, if you could let me know please. I just got my mic and was a little confused. Thank you so much.
So sorry for any inconvenience caused. We had hoped to ship last month, but some small production delays got in the way. We genuinely feel that shipping should commence worldwide this month, which would make B&H's estimate fairly accurate.
I'm loving the smartlav, and I've been using it for all my videos up to now, but with the Rode app, just recently doesn't work for me! It crashes more than 50% of the times I tried to record, and it's basically the same on my 2 iPads (iPad Pro & iPad Air 2) and my iPhone 7! It either crashes when I'm done with the recording and click the Done button, or sometimes although it's recording and showing levels like usually, when I stop the recording as I've been doing usually it just deletes all recorded! Not sure why is that, but it's for all my devices! That's why when I use it with iOS device it's safer to use it with some other app!
+zeebazu The Rode App isnt developed by Rode and it shows. Its very poor quality, has lots of bugs and just isnt worth it. I have both standard and paid versions. I now find its much easier to just record into garageband on my IOS devices.
Thanks to Layzie's recommendation, I found that using the High-Q MP3 Voice Recorder app makes a BIG difference on Android. I set the microphone to "raw audio" and reduced the gain to -5db. There is still noise, but it's now a level that can be easily removed in Audacity (or any other software). So it works, but I do think that Rode should port their own app to Android before being able to claim that it the Smartlav is fully Android compatible - because the noise with most other apps (like Soundcloud) is totally unacceptable.
If anyone is still wondering, the smartlav will work with any smartphone or tablet, ios or android, even if it's not listed on the website compatibility. The smartlav is an analog device that plugs in via a standard ttrs jack. This means that there can't be any issue with compatibility, since the jack is the only connection between the lav and your device. And forget about the Rode Rec app, it will never be developed for Android and the ios version is a pos. Just use RecForge on Android and everything will be fine.
Hi Bill, When you have the smartLav connected to the iPhone and shoot video, it will use the audio from the smartLav. However, there is no gain control or other settings to control the audio.
I primarily want this mic to record for video. I tested the SMLV+ with my native iPhone video app, and it worked once, then stopped. Movie Pro, Filmic Pro, no matter what I do it uses the native iPhone microphone. I tried getting a new SMLV+ and same thing. I can't get it to work while recording any video.
The microphone is awesome but the app is awful. Aside from the annoying reminders to upgrade to Pro, it doesn't remember your mic gain settings and it doesn't integrate properly with iOS export/sharing.
Hey! We want to buy one but we have Huawei P8 phones. This model is not included in the list but I saw the video was uploaded before these Huawei models were launched. Any comment on this?
If 2 ppl are in a video (in close proximity) and the smartlav is being used to record the audio from a mobile phone, would each person need to have their own smartlav/mobile to clearly record both voices... or would it pickup the other person's voice as long as they stay within close proximity (both people sitting on the same couch for example)
I preordered through B&H and said they were arriving March 5th, I really needed it for a wedding last weekend. It now says April 10th on B&H website. Is this really going to be released then, or are you expecting a push back again? thanks.
Can we also record videos using this mic ? I have samasung s7 edge and the boya lav mic doesn't work on it so asking will this rode one work for videos
I'm getting horrible results with a Galaxy S3 and Soundcloud. It clips and distorts a lot. Seemingly no way of adjusting levels. I've also tried the SmartLav with Easy Voice Recorder Pro and Voice Recorder, with equally poor results. I've contacted Rode customer support for help but they simply provided infos already available in Rode videos and forums. I've done extensive research with no results. Any advice in order to get the SmartLav to work with Galaxy S3/Android would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You're completely right. It doesn't function well with Android. It gives more noise than the standard mic on my device. Now that is completely inacceptable, while Rode says: 'Yes, you can use it on an Android-device'. Yes, you can use it on an Android device, but only if you like high noise rates. Well, let me tell you, I don't like that.
Samsung Galaxy S3 Nothing but noise...... I've tried multiple apps and setting and the sound is just brutal. Voice is great, too much background noise. Not meant for Android I guess. Too bad, great idea but only for a select group of Ipeople. Wonder how it'll work on the Zoom H1???
Does this work with 1) the native video app on iPhone and 2) with a lightening adaptor for newer phones without a headphone jack? When I do this I get zero input :(
I have tried several android apps (Nexus 5) and I have had the best results on RecForge. Please Rode, give us what we want. Get those devs to port to Android. I know it isn't that hard.
+Patsycoconut I also have a Nexus 5. Do you know how can I shoot the video + sound in the same app? I don't want to keep editing the videos with audios after.
Hi Rode Microphones. Thanks for this video. I have an Olympus DM 420 voice recorder, and have been looking for the best external microphone to get really good quality recordings. It has a 3.5 microphone jack, and I'm looking for a microphone you might have that is lightweight, and not too bulky to bring along. The two external microphones from Olympus I tried Didn't get very good sound in my recordings. What would you recommend? Thanks.
Can you please suggest a good Android App for smart lav mics. I know anyone could work, but we tried some and the audio sounds really bad. Your IOS app recording is good but i am facing some memory space issues. So can u suggest me a good android app.
ohhhhhhh what a quick and to the point video this was, thank you so much, I have one question though, can I take recorded file via smart lav micfrom my Android phone to final cut pro or soundtrack pro for editing ? love from India :-)
terribly disappointed that there is no android app. it is made to seem like the mic works well on any device when in fact it is almost useless on android devices. i tried it on my brother's iphone and it works beautifully.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, and the audio is pretty awful. Lot's of hiss, and apparently setting the input level is after the phones pre-amp, thus you easily get distortion. But that's not the fault of the mic. On my iPad it sounds great. Suggestion from "Layzie" didn't change the quality on my S2. Anyone else had some experience with this?
Hey guys! I'm wondering about two smartLav mics at the same time. For example interview. What about syncing with video in "post-production" from 2 devices? Is that problematically? Or works fine? (I'm using iMovie) Cheers :)
Røde wrote on Twitter: "smartLav will work w/ any Android sound recording app - we recommend Soundcloud or Easy Voice Recorder." Hope we'll get better apps soon than those two..
hey rode. I have a question. I need to use a voice changer app (cosplay) on my iphone. can I plug in the Mic using the lightning adaptor and the amplifier using the 3.5mm port and the sound would come out of the amp ? or would using both ports cancel the sound. Many thanks
I believe the phone used in the video is 5s which in real doesn't work with iPhone's in built voice memo app. We tried to do download rode rec app but it says not available for your region (India). But ya rode rec lt app is available and it records with lav+ but the rec quality is poor, I mean the vocal cuts in between. I tried rode rec lt on iPhone 5s and iPhone 7 same problem in the recordings. I also tried recording on OnePlus 6 with its native voice recorder but it doesn't record. Kindly help what should I do. Assist me with some other apps for iOS or Android. Looking forward
Hey there, for iOS check out RODE Reporter, it's a much newer recording app that we have developed after RODE Rec. For Android, we don't make our own app but check out REC Forge!
Hey I'm an android user (Nexus 5) and I'm thinking of purchasing this because I'm a journalist seeking good audio for my interviews. Have any android users purchased smartLav? I've read mixed reviews stating the sound is not as good as an iPhone because they can download an app.
If I record the video using Toshiba Camileo Air10 which doesnt have an external mic.... and use my smartphone with the Rode smartlav, will I be able to sync up the video and the audio pretty easily?
I bought a smartlav+ microphone to make sure i had quality audio on the videoclips i post on social media. Turns out its doesent work with a samsung galaxy S4 Active. When plugged in, it does not record audio when recording video with the built in camera app. But it works when recording audio from an audio recroding app. why is that??
I used the Smartlav with Soundcloud. It produced even more noise than my normal (inbuilt) tablet mic. I tried it on iPhone, with the Rode app. Wonderful. But, unfortunately, I'm a Nexus 5 user. So please Rode. Make a special Android App. Or else I have to throw that nice piece of microphone in the garbage. Now, that would be a shame, wouldn't it? So, on behalf of all the Android-users who wish to use the Smartlav. Make that app!
the phone itself seems to be picking up as much noise as the mic itself. when it's placed in my pocket and walking, the vocals are almost inaudible compared to the rustling of the phone in my pocket. Any ideas? thanks
The microphone is great and I've been using in some professional shootings. But last week I had a problem for the first time. I was interviewing someone and the phone was in his pocket, maybe it could be the way the person hold the phone, but it stopped the recording right from beginning. The problem is that even blocking the screen, the sound recording app is still easily accessed by touching the blocking button. Luckly I had a backup shotgun microphone, but still this audio is different from all the other interviews. Has anyone been through this situation before? Is there an app that is not accessible at the blocking screen of the phone?
just taken delivery and it doesn't work on my iphone 6+ or my ipod video. Went on their website and there is no contact us facility - which I believe is illegal. So there's basically no customer support!! Bought this to record video not use their ridiculously impractical audio only app. I was told it worked on video and it clearly doesn't. Really annoyed there's no customer support!!
just to confirm Rode did answer also by email. But problem was of my own making - left the mic attached during playback so that sound can't be heard. Don't do this and you'll be fine!! Product works well
Jaymie Jones Sorry for the late reply but I think I found a solution. The paid app seems to work for me from Rode. I can't confirm this because I didn't try the free version long. I did look up "best settings for smartlav +" though so check that out and let me know how things are going after you change the settings.
Cody Smith I fixed it by turning off iOS processing and putting digital boost up to 100%. Gain is at 30% (approx). I think the sound suffers a bit from the Digital Boost though.
I've been using the SmartLav on an IPhone 4S for over a year with great results. Has anyone noticed a change in sound quality with the most recent mobile app update (Version 2.9.31)? Wondering if the default settings have changed because I've noticed the audio sounds distant and muddy compared to previous recordings I've done.
RODE, why haven't you made an android app? You could kill the current competition in the recording apps.
What if I don't want to share my audio to soundcloud? Rode, make your app for android too. We NEED that available!!
I have an Android Samsung Galaxy S 4,
and I tried Sound Cloud, Easy Voice Recorder, and a few others,
but they all left a hissing noise...

Please Røde! Make the android app. I'm willing to pay (again) for a pro app for android even though I bought the app for my iPad. Please!
I think all Android users should constantly email and called Røde to let them know we need an app! Android users want the the same quality.
I have found that RecForge Pro works pretty well on my Nexus 5. Albeit not as well as the dedicated Rode app for iOS.

Hi. Is there a way to confirm that the recording quality on a Samsung Galaxy S2 is inferior to that of iPhones when using the SmartLav? Thanks.

Cody Smith and this is with the Paid app.
@Jaymie Jones Hi there, I hope you don't mind me asking - what is the app exactly called, I see various but am not too sure what to go with.
Is it CTIA or OMTP? Is this compatible with the Nexus 6P?
+Mert Capkin the smartLav+ uses a CTIA connection.
RØDE Microphones Is it possible to use this with the Nexus 6P then?
DEFINITELY SOUNDCLOUD!!
Please, make an Android app.
Rode android app, PLEASE!
+sprtn757 Probably because it's recording through the phone's mic and not the lav. Same issue here (albeit a year later).
