  • Flipper Zero is the ultimate geek swiss army knife. It packs more sensors than I ever thought possible, and does it while being super cute! Bluetooh LE, Sub-ghz, NFC, RFID, Infrared, iButton, Rubber Ducky (BadUSB), 125hz RF, and a powerful controller to boot, with custom software.
    This thing is a beast. And yet, I still feel that some of the properties assigned to it are overrated.
    So, bottom line, is the Flipper Zero the ultimate hacking device? Is it all true, or is some of it just pumping the gadget?
    Can the Flipper steal credit cards? Copy car keys? Let's find out!

    you can jam a portion of the spectrum used by the key fob to prevent the car from picking it up, capture the signal on the unblocked portion, and replay the code later. the only issue is if the code has already been received

    • @hml
      @hml  Před 6 měsíci +9

      True, but you need to be close enough, or have an amplifier for the signal, jamming doesn't work even from 1 meter away. Very hard to actually do that in real life.

      The code will not be the next code, cars today use rolling codes via a secret algoritme that makes up codes that the blip and car expect. Those times with recording the code and just use it again is over.

    fun and informative video- thanks for the breakdown! my guesses for the game were:
    Challenge #1 : yes?
    Challenge #2 : yes.
    Challenge #3 : yes for certain cars depending on if rolling codes aren't used?
    Challenge #4 : i'd bet that it can do traffic lights in certain places where a hypothetical RF based control unit isn't encrypted well, or maybe it can do it anywhere by triggering the EMS override via IR?
    Challenge #5 : probably not unless the algo or encryption method used by keycard manufacturer etc is documented and known?
    Challenge #6 : definitely
    surprised to know it can offload the computation process on your phone when cracking encryption thats specifically really cool to me

    • @hml
      @hml  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I've been using mine without a screen protector, and it doesn't scratch much, but I guess a screen protector could be good. I 3D printed my case, but you definitely should buy or print a case. The extra boards - you just plug them into the GPIO connectors, very easy. Depends on the board - did you get the wifi board? With a custom firmware you can block WiFi signal, and capture WiFi. With a regular custom board, you can add a stronger IR blaster and a bunch of other things.

    Again that's a maybe. A lot of Volkswagen auto group cars (VW, Skoda, SEAT, Audi, maybe even Porsche and Lambo) are vulnerable as until 2016 they used 4 seed codes for *ALL THEIR MODELS* you just need to know where the car is at on the roll and you can then unlock. They use unencrypted lock/unlock ends to their codes too. I wouldn't call *millions* of cars "very few exceptions"
    Haven't seen those 4 seed codes available easily, though I bet they're out there, or you could just buy an ECU and rip it from the memory.
    However it's outside the primary F0 userbase ability. Additionally (most) rolling code systems are one way, meaning the car doesn't communicate with the fob, to my understanding at least, they just work off tables of 64,000 (or more, eg 128k) codes and have a 64 code wiggle room for synchronization, though this does depend.

    • @hml
      @hml  Před 6 měsíci +4

      Wow, I wasn't aware so many cars from the VAG group are using the same 4 seed codes! That's just crazy, especially for a car, especially in 2016. What the heck were they thinking? Thanks for that!
      Yeah, most rolling codes are one way, but still, if you capture a few codes from a fob, then replay it with them F0, and the fob went too far off - the car might stop accepting codes from the fob, rendering the fob unusable. I know it happens with BMW and a few other brands.
      Thanks for the info!

      what should be done is an elevation in the average persons understanding of security so that they don't buy cars that feature security systems that would be no different than have a button that opens your door instead of a handle.

    • @hml
      @hml  Před 4 měsíci +3

      While this might be true, I haven't encountered those systems in the wild. I have successfully copied the hotel cards in about 10 different hotels in the US (Marriot, Hilton and Hyatt), one resort in Greece (the one in the video) and in WeWork... So it seems to be working well enough in the real world. Not saying it works always, just in enough real life cases to be useful.

      There are a few car brands that are very vulnerable, so you could pretty easily hack them. For the more modern/secure ones - that's a challenge. So even if you brute force opening the door, which is very hard, you still won't be able to start the car.

Also when the remote stopped to work for the air-conditioner i tested maybe 20 apps for IR blasting before I realizes that my unit is rebranded brand here in Sweden .. when I got the right brand name it worked in most of them. such joy when it doesn’t work and the weather keeps shifting outside.
