  • with all the discussion about "reef tanks are expensive" I decided to setup a 40 gallon tank without all the bells and whistles. HOB filters, Chinese black box lights, and no sump. Can it be done? Stay tuned...

Nice to see someone else using ViparSpectra lights. I've been using them for the past year and I love them.
I'm going to follow your progress with the budget tank. I am one of those no disposable income reefers myself.
    Keep up the good work.👍🏾

I use them as well and love them. For the price they've been amazing. 2x of the 165w versions for two years now.

I love the fact you have a basement full of “Frankenstein” tanks.
Definitely can accumulate stuff fast but, if you stay in it long enough theirs a use. 😂👍

My first reef tank started as budget friendly as was possible. 55 gallon for $99, steel stand $60, 20 gallon sump tank $20, diy sump kit $65, hob overflow $75, black box leds w/controller $165, protein skimmer $99, wave makers $125, return pump $75, plumbing $40, dry rock & live sand $90, 1 damsel $5, cleaner shrimp $30... eventually got an auto top off $90. 4 years later i replaced the lights $800!! & added media reactors & media $80 & an inkbird temperature controller $35 (the actual heater was included with the tank) and a fan on my sump $25 for cooling in the summer... then ive dropped thousands on corals...
But still rocking much of thst budget ewuipment. Cheap lights grow coral but you get what you pay for... i imagine any say my wave or return pump could go...

as far as that stand... is the rim of the tank just sitting on the rim or frame of the stand? the surface of the stand is not one piece?

I put a piece of this Styrofoam on top of the stand. Otherwise yes its an open top stand which i wouldn't recommend just sitting the tank on top of. Its worked out great for a few years now.

2 actually. I put 2 aqueon 100 watt heaters. They’re cheap and easy to get from petco or amazon

@@q-ballsreef7651 if i can get saltwater, corals, fish and stones from the sea. Do i need to cycle it or i can just put it all in my tank directly?

Aquatop is the maker. Found it on Amazon. It’s nice but not the quietest.
