  • We all felt sadness and admiration for Thomas after he saved Jimmy (his unrequited love) from a beating at the hands of local yobs by offering himself for the battering instead. Maybe this is the beginning of changing his life and to thank everyone for their support in making him stay in Downton.

    Poor Thomas. When he says " I'm afraid it will shock and disgust you" he sounds like a little boy confessing he did something terrible. It makes you see how vulnerable he is and how tortured he feels.

    Bates and Thomas honestly have the most interesting relationship on this show. They both have some really dark sides to them while also being capable of great compassion. So similar and completely opposite at the same time. Neither would bat an eye at the other being tossed out but neither would see the other ruined. I love watching them play off each other.

    The relationship between Thomas and Mrs. Hughes is underrated. It's extremely difficult for him to trust anyone, so it says a lot about her that he chooses to confide in her about himself and risk rejection. When he gets acceptance instead, it seals her status as the closest thing to a mother that he has.

    I swear, this show has the most interesting approach to a homosexual man in this time period I have ever seen. It seems that all other media set in this time period has all the characters turning against them, but in this one, everyone seems not to understand it, but to accept it. They recognize he's the same person they all grew to care for, they just now realize that he has "a mental condition," which is also true for the times. They even defend him in ways realistic to the time period. No one ever specifically says "It's okay to love other men," but they do say things like, "That is just the way you were born. You can't change that, and this is not your fault." All of this is perfectly realistic to the time period, but also breaks from the stereotype of "shun, shun, shun."

      There were more homosexual men and women living their lives with 'companions' and 'bachelor friends' than we ever see....not saying it was embraced or anything, but people knew, and more than the media lets on, some just didn't care. Yeah, homosexuality was tolerated more than you think. There were people who just didn't care--as long as homosexuals kept to themselves, these people didn't bat an eye. It was the "moral crusaders," in league with the police, who tormented homosexuals during this period in English history. Even more interestingly--there were European countries that had de-criminalized homosexuality by the 1910s and 1920s, France foremost among them (Napoleon had a soft spot for homosexuals and decriminalized sodomy in the 1810s).

    • @elamplough1
      @elamplough1 Před 4 lety +23

      I suspect it wasn't unusual for some people agreeing to marry someone that they knew full well was gay but at a time when love wasn't really the reason for marriage it had to be done. It's known that certain aristocratic women overlooked the fact that their husbands had male lovers but as long as they had sex with their marital partner to at least have children then your main duty as a wife was kind of done after getting pregnant.
      I'm not so sure if a husband would have tolerated his wife having lesbian lovers though. Historians strongly suspect some famous lesbians in the past but apparently it's far more difficult to verify a gay woman in historical research than a gay man. You never see lesbians in period dramas like Downton Abbey either and I guess that's just because people aren't really sure how society treated lesbians compared to homosexuals.

      @Jamila Malluf The world isn't black or white, there are a lot of grey shades. And there is always a way to save something ruined, it may take a lot of time and energy but save everything. Thomas never did anything extremely horrible (don't mention that sweet little baby, O'Brien killed it, Thomas only kept the secret. And what should he have done with that info, get O'Brien into prison? That would have been so unnecessary. It's not that I don't think she did something horrible, I just don't want anybody to go to prison, there are other ways to punish people.). He made mistakes, maybe a lot of them but he learned from them in the end. There is no way you are going to tell me that he was evil in the end, cause he wasn't. He was a man struggling with who was in a world where he wasn't allowed to be himself. He never had love in his life, it's not weird that he doesn't know how to behave kindly, cause almost nobody was kind to him. Don't blame him for being the person the world made him be. I'll also add Lord Merton, Bertie Pelham, and Mr. Bates, because although Mr. Bates certainly has his dangerous side, he is always moral. I don't think Miss O'Brien was entirely evil, though she was as grey as Thomas. I say this because O'Brien changed her mind about the soap trick against Cora and tried to undo it but was moments too late, and she never stopped feeling deeply guilty for Cora's miscarriage. (I think that guilt was what finally drove her to run away to India when opportunity arose.) O'Brien also did some other things for honestly the right reason. Does it forgive him for some of the worse things he’s done, of course not, but the man is just a boy who was always told he was disgusting and had no other outlet to take out that anger.

    Gotta love Carson--he's totally homophobic (which is normal for his times) but he's very sexist too. "Oh, my, I'm so sorry Ms. Hughes, that you had to listen to such horrors." Like Ms. Hughes was an innocent child who hasn't been around the block a few times. I also LOVE Ms. Hughes here. She sees the full humanity of Thomas, and correctly figures out that vain, flirty Jimmy is also partly to blame for this kerfuffle. Good for her!

    • @jenniferconstantine9041
      @jenniferconstantine9041 Před 5 lety +38

      I always thought it was awful of her to say that about Jimmy. Would we say that a woman was asking to have a man let himself into her room and try to initiate a sexual encounter while she was sleeping just because she had a flirtatious personality? If anything, Jimmy is completely unaware of how Thomas is interpreting things. If they fired the maid for having a voluntary sexual encounter, then Thomas absolutely should have been fired and arrested for his predatory behavior.

    • @Luboman411
      @Luboman411 Před 5 lety +114

      Ms. Hughes was actually being fair here--she was fine with Thomas being fired. He needed to suffer the consequences for sneaking in and doing that to Jimmy. What she didn't abide by was Jimmy blackmailing Carson, preventing Thomas from receiving a reference letter. Unlike the fired maid, Thomas had worked at Downton for 10 years with a great work record--he deserved that reference letter. That and his veteran status I think made Ms. Hughes correct here--Jimmy had to back off and allow Thomas to leave with his career intact.

    • @jenniferconstantine9041
      @jenniferconstantine9041 Před 5 lety +16

      @@Luboman411 I meant when she said Jimmy had somehow been at fault or asking for it since he has a flirtatious nature. As for the reference, I'm on the fence. I think even if someone has a really good track record of service, but they do something that is predatory in nature, the next employer has a right to know in the interest of protecting the people under their roof. But blackmail is always wrong, I'll agree on that.

      @@jenniferconstantine9041 I see it your way, and it seems fair in some situations that a track record should perhaps be given up on because of a recent glaring incident which puts a blemish on it. However two things here. The period. And the fact that as Thomas himself described, in his world, a glance, a word was all they had to fall back on when gauging these things, gauging other peoples's interests in them. He was also not quite predatory in the scene, he wished to be with Jimmy WITH his consent, trying to lovingly coax him when Jimmy wakes up and say there was no reason to hide his true self from him (Thomas). He did not intend or attempt to rape or molest the guy. Not trying to defend his behaviour, but saying there was context. He of course shouln't have laid a finger on Jimmy but at the time [or even recently], jumping the gun was the only way to have moved it forward, even if that seems alien to you. That is of course THOMAS's side of it, which Mrs Hughes may or may not have heard in full. And believed. Otherwise, her offhand comment could be again attributed to : the period.

    When Thomas says "I'll be gone soon. You'll be glad of that" to Bates, that bit of information hits differently when you know what takes place afterwards. Bates had no idea that Thomas had been pushed that far into a corner. "Perhaps you should try being nicer." "It's being nice that got me into trouble." I know he was referring to how the house reacted when he tried to teach Jimmy how to read (thinking he was trying to make a pass at the lad; Thomas liked him, but I'm going off point here). The household weren't in the wrong to expect something bad from Thomas (the servants knew that he was still a bitter, mean-spirited man at that juncture) and it's hard to dispel an opinion about a person when said person constantly reinforces that truth. I think people who have been maltreated and thus, develop a fear of being harmed learn to naturally sharpen their claws if they want to survive.That being said, I'm glad that Thomas was able to start healing towards the end. When George offers him that orange in bed, we really see the real him and it is beautiful.

    I felt so sorry for Thomas, for as much bad he did with his plotting. He was really alone as O’Brian turned in him. Thanks to Bates and Mrs. Hughes who managed to help him out of it. Tbh I am surprised Thomas didn’t become a professional cricket player.

    These sort of British historical dramas/soaps are a dime a dozen. However, Downton Abbey is a happy exception. Insightful writing by the brilliant Julian Fellowes and top drawer acting all around make this very entertaining.

    When he saw the look on O’Brien’s face, like the cat who ate the canary, he knew she had something to do with it and even though he’s not a fan of Thomas, knew it was unfair.

    To face the possibility of execution just because of who you are. Yes, Thomas had many bad qualities, but Mrs Hughes could see past all that to see he was just a human being, nothing less. And to be honest she seemed to have that 'mother' view of most of the staff. O'Brien on the other hand was the real monster.

    Thomas was such an interesting character because sometimes he was SO easy to hate, but then a few scenes later he could make you really sympathize with him and want him to be happy. There is no excuse for some of the horrible things he said and did throughout the series, but it is obvious that he had a hard life and always had to hide who he was. He even states several times that there are few people who had ever shown him kindness. It's no wonder he was so terrible at times. Thomas is one of my all-time favorite characters on Downton Abbey.

    The world has not changed as much as we'd love it to be. I was blackmailed by my professional co-worker; mind you, we are all PsyD. The man told me if I didn't back off of the promotion, he would let my other co-worker know I was married to a man and we were playing house like regular people. This happened like six years ago. I saved every email and voicemail and recorded the conversation between him and me; I was there the morning they fired, walked him to his car, and struck him. 4 weeks later, I civilly sued him and won that case, too. So, no, things have not changed as much as we think.

      They have. The fact that he was rightfully fired and you successfully sued proves it.

    Poor Thomas....living under the awful, exhausting, horrifying weight of his 'secret', always on edge, never truly able to be himself, always afraid..... I think he became a better person after O'Brian left, in small ways (he was so lovely with the children, and *that* breaks your heart, too, because in that time, he'd never be able to have a family or a child.....), and then in large. I want as happy an ending as is possible for him. Love him so much!
