The Righteous Brothers LOVED soul and blues music. They used to sing in El Toro Marine Base area...Many black marines came to hear them and they would cry out, "That's RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS!" And that's how they got their name!
As far as your question about "controversy" over their music back in the day, a DJ at a "black" radio station said in an interview that he had started playing their big hit You've Lost That Loving Feeling. It was a big hit with his predominantly black audience. So he asked the Righteous Brothers to come down to the station for an on-air interview. Remember there was no internet or music videos so he naturally expected the "brothers" to be black based on their sound and he was shocked when two white dudes walked in for the interview. After that interview, he said he was told by the station's management to not play their songs anymore since they were white. But the DJ said that his audience loved their music regardless of their color so he ignored the boss and continued to play it. And of course, that song went on to become the most played song on American radio in the 20th century. That DJ said he had also heard stories about how some "white" radio stations wouldn't play that song initially because they assumed the Righteous Brothers were black, but relented when they found out they were white.
Don't know which DJ you are referring to, but good for him. There were, however, many black-owned stations that stopped playing them when they discovered they were white. They would only play black artists, no matter how popular the white artist was with their audience. Bill has said they would have had a bigger hit if they had stayed home. I do know that it was a black DJ, in Philly, who started calling them his blue-eyed soul brothers after meeting them (they both have blue eyes). As far as white-owned stations not playing them because they thought they were black, I never heard them referring to that... suppose it could have happened somewhere, but it was more likely it was stations that didn't play that type of music. It's funny hearing there were stations that thought they were too hard rock.

Bill Medley is still singing at age 82 and I have a ticket to see him! In his last two albums, 'Your Heart to Mine' and 'Damn Near Righteous', he returned to the blues. Included are a remake of this song, Lonely Avenue, Rock Me Baby, A Change is Gonna Come, and a song Bill wrote called This Will Be the Last Time (I Sing the Blues), which is outstanding. I grew up in high school with this music. This song was not played on main stream radio as being too controversial. The only way to get this was off an album you bought.

It was Bill Medley singing mostly Bobby Hatfield came in towards the end. Bill had the baritone voice and Bobby Hatfield was the tenor. THEY shouldn't have blended together but they did and it was pure magic. They were also known as the Blue Eyed Soul Bros because they sang from their hearts and souls.
They do complete justice to that funky Muddy Waters song! And the man playing that funky funky Blues guitar was none other than Glen Campbell the country star.

You HAVE to listen to their version of Summertime. It will blow you away.
Don't forget to hear both amazing brothers singing "You Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul and Inspiration" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". They both loved R&B when they got together in 1962. These are two guys are from Orange County CA and they had to drive to get in the air wave signal to hear R&B on the radio back then. Their early album from Moonglow records has a doo wop early R&B sound to it. These guys can sing.

The song was originally released by Muddy Waters in the 50s and released by Etta James on the flip side of her "At Last"45 rpm in 1960. So I'm sure they both influenced the RBs.

Back in the day the Righteous Brothers (and some others) were known for songs that were referred to as "panty droppers". Bill Medley, the one singing, was known back in the '60s to choose who he dated without regard for color. Funny you mentioned Elvis because they were friends. If they were appearing in Vegas at the same time, Elvis would occasionally prank them while they were on-stage.

The Righteous Brothers are among the greatest ever, among my personal favorites, but you also need to hear Ben E King and the Drifters do "Stand By Me" and "Spanish Harlem" and "There Goes My Baby" and "Save the Last Dance For Me" and "This Magic Moment" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling" and the list goes on. You should also hear Roy Orbison sing "Crying" and "Only the Lonely" and "Running Scared." Do yourself a favor. You deserve it.
My first concert was the Righteous Brothers in Chicago in the early 60s.❤️ Blue eyed soul at its finest. I think this song was too spicy to be played on tv. If you can find it check the video of Bobby singing Summertime. They covered a lot of different music genre.
They were both influenced by the Black R&B singers at the time. Ray Charles, BobbyBlue Bland, Little Richard. They were really popular in the clubs and live venues but the radio stations found their early music too hard rock. They did a lot of blues … ‘Somethin’s got a Hold on Me:, ‘Harlem Shuffle’ and ‘Summertime’ are all great. What made them national and international stars was the soul ballads produced by Specter, but they never lost their love of Rock n Roll - it was still part of their shows right up to 2003 when Bobby died.

That's Bill singing the lead, Bobby did background vocals and he could get funky too. Their inspirations were all the old blues singers. And the studio band was The Wrecking Crew and that's Glen Campbell on guitar 🎸.
This is a cover of an old Willie Dixon/Muddy waters song. It's been covered by many like Etta James and where most folks have heard it with Foghat's cover.

We were listing to the Righteous Brothers at boy girl parties when I was fourteen at people's houses and their parents were always home. We weren't hiding the music so maybe the parents just weren't listening! Everybody back then loved the Righteous Brothers.

Lead singer is Bill Medley, the taller one with the dark hair. As a teen he'd seen Ray Charles perform and LOVED the blues.
Bobby Hatfield was backup on this song; he's the shorter blond one.
Can I also recommend Billy Joel, another big fan of Ray Charles. Billy has a daughter whose middle name is 'Ray'. Billy wrote a song "Baby Grand" for Ray Charles, which they recorded together (there is an official video of this recording on CZcams). There's also a great live recording of Billy Joel singing "New York State of Mind" (do a CZcams search using "Billy Joel - New York State Of Mind (from Old Grey Whistle Test)"), and midsong Billy has echoes of Ray Charles in his voice, just like Bill Medley does in "I Just Want to Make Love to You".
By the way, Ray Charles personally presided over Billy Joel's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Greatest generation for music, and Bill and Bobby were my greatest inspiration and hooked me on soul music!! They were never a contriverse. I'm 78 years old.

Song written by Muddy Watters and sung by Etta James. Bill Medley heard it on jukebox and determined to make it Righteous Brothers song. Bill is the tall dark one who is still touring at 83 years old. Bobby Hatfield died of heart failure in 2003.
Weird story... That is a young Glen Campbell on guitar paying his dues as a studio musician and at one point you can hear THREE voices. It's Glen caught up in the song adding in a few quiet 'yeahs' of his own but the mics caught them and they kept this recording.
I didn’t know that was Glen Campbell! I assumed Barry Rillera played guitar and was the third voice. Interesting!
I seriously doubt if it was Glenn Campbell or The Wrecking Crew. This was recorded in 1964 at the Moonglow Records studio. Glenn and the Wrecking Crew were at Phil Spector's Philly Records. A year or two later Spector signed them to Philly Records and that's when they worked with the Wrecking Crew. Their Moonglow work was a little more raw carried more emotion. Their later work was more polished and a little more corporate. This and Little Latin Lupe Lu were probably their biggest hits at Moonglow.

Well, i was in my early 20's, and i dont think that we thought much about it then. I think some radio stations wouldnt play it. But we loved it. This was one of Bill's best. Love it. Blue-eyed soul indeed! There was no one like them. And if you havnt heard Bobbys live performance of "Summertime" on a show called Something Special, look it up on You Tube. It will blow you away!

Yes, they had several controversial hits that radio stations wouldn’t play, including this ‘adult content’ one. Another was ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’ about interracial dating that they sang at the Playboy Club. Remember this was early 60’s, days of civil rights discord and battles. At the time of the song, Bill (who in addition to singing also wrote and produced many Righteous Brothers songs)was dating Darlene (brain freeze on her last name), lead singer of the Blossoms, an all black female group of the time.
Brown-eyed Woman (1968) was a Bill Medley solo after he left the Righteous Brothers (adult content?? There were, and are, people--black, white, chartreuse or whatever--who don't approve of interracial relationships, but the song hardly contains adult content).The fact he was dating Darlene Love at that time was just a coincidence. Mann and Weil were working on the song and thought his voice would fit it. They didn't know Bill and Darlene were in a relationship until they approached Bill about singing the song. Brown-eyed Girl is a completely different song.

However, ‘adult content’ was referring to the song played with this comment stream (‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’) that the reactor himself referred to as ‘adult content’ when asking his audience if they knew of any other similar RB songs. ‘Adult content’ songs (including those about adult behavior such as those explicitly referring to sexual activity) being controversially not played on most if not all major radio stations at the time (60s), other songs on controversial topics of the day (war protest, interracial dating, etc.) were also not played. Though the topic was explicit in ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’ and the song was not played on the radio, the lyrics in ‘Brown Eyed Woman’ were more subtle yet still clearly evident to the majority of the public and this one was also not played on the radio. Have you listened to the song? Hard to miss the intent. It doesn’t matter if the married songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil did or didn’t know that Bill was in an interracial relationship, they were clearly aware of the current political and social climate as they had written other songs addressing racial injustice (including ‘Uptown’ recorded by the Crystals, ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’ recorded by the Animals, and ‘Magic Town’ by the Vogues) during their prolific and successful songwriting careers.
Darlene Love. She wrote a book called 'My Name is Love', and she devotes almost four chapters to Bill. Bill has a book, too, but Darlene includes details! Bill is too much of a gentleman, I guess.

They were the opening act for the Beatles their first American tour. They quit after a few weeks as they couldn't take all the freaky girls. The next year they opened for the Rolling Stones first American tour.That's how popular they were. They were way ahead of their time. They grew up separately in Orange County California and loved the blues at the time.

Bill tells that b4 they met, when they were both still in HS, their friends were listening to the Beach Boys, but Bobby & Bill would tune in to the R&B radio station. Once they met in their early 20s, they realized their mutual love for R&B music. Of course, this song didn't get air time on the radio but don't remember any controversy about playing anything else that they recorded. They have a ton of R&B performances on video from the Shindig Show. It's really what they were known for and they could let it rip. Check out live performances like "You Are My Sunshine", "I Need Your Loving Everyday", "Justine" and "Ko Ko Joe" if you want to see them blow and see their humor. They were the best! Great reaction!

The AM stations NEVER played this up north.. It sounds just like it was recorded in a chicago blues club. (it might have been a studio recording but it sounds authentic
One of Bill Medley's biggest musical influence had to have been Ray Charles. His phrasing and vocal licks are nearly identical in many ways. Listen to some Ray Charles blues from the same time period (or earlier) and you'll see what I mean.
