  • In this video you will learn how to do a forehand chop. This is a shot defensive players should use to return topspin attacks. But even if you are an attacker, this is a shot you can learn to add a little more variety to your game.
The tips in this video come from Orsi Petocz. She has represented Hungary at an international level and is currently coaching in Cambridge, UK. You can follow Orsi on Twitter / okpetocz , or read her profile on the Paragon Table Tennis website: www.paragontabletennis.co.uk/...
In the video Orsi is using a DHS Tin Arc 3 rubber for her forehand chops.

Thank you Tom and Lodziak and Orsi Petocz for this lovely action on how to execute fore hand chop effectively. The weight transfer, footwork are so important.

Talking about the grip of the racket would be also great, since I only heard Joo Sae Yuck teaching how he changes the strength in his fingers depending on the incoming topspin... I practise a lot forehand chop and I try to find answers on my own about that, since TT teachers don't know much about defensive shots... I wonder if high level players like Orsi have tips like that to improve stability and consistancy at chopping. I experimented that holding the racket very tight (strong topspins) or loosening (slow tospins) is also crucial. Thank you for your contribution, it's a nice video!

Hey Tom have you ever thought of doing a video on hitting the ball after it hits the net and goes over? I’ve never seen one and It’s hard to judge what to do once it hits and changes the spin. I know it would be a little difficult to actually try to hit the net and make it go over but I think it would be a great help and video! Thanks Tom ! Btw great coaching videos! I’m always learning and you helped me improve a lot!

great video. a few more ?s on this topic. (1) she is using a DHS Tin Arc 3 rubber. What makes for a great chopping rubber? does it need to be tacky? soft and tacky? why doesnt she use short or long pips to chop? (2) what should you differently for different incoming spin if you decide to chop a ball? if the incoming ball has topspin, like she says in this video...but what about no spin or back spin?
    thanks!

  • @vyacheslavbrodovoy2039

My usual mistake is to move the bat too much forward, as in a push. That's why I successfully chop one of three attacking topspins at best. The opponent's force of attack should be used instead, and the bat should move downwards, as we can see here.
