    In this match strategy video we cover the most important tactics to think about when you are a chopper.
    1. Keep the ball low and deep
    2. Use variation of spin, speed, and placement
    3. Attack occasionally as a surprise

    It seems as though table tennis is so attack commend oriented these days that one never see information or training on defensive play. I appreciate you putting this information out here for all to see. There are many ways to play this great game, and we need to explore all styles. Great job, guys!

    Hello Alex,
    Thanks for all the great videos and very helpful tips and has helped me quite a bit. I have played tt for a 4-5 yrs but not regularly so would say am around 6/10 !
    I have a question on returning a heavy underspin especially a very low serve with topspin when the ball is very low and deep. I wanted to give an insight into what the situation is and then ask the question for THAT situation.
    The table we are playing is an average one. We were playing with a 3 star stiga ball with quite an even bounce (very rarely like 1 in a 50 it gets low bounce). I am using: Racket Assembly Yasaka Sweden Extra - Flared Handle, F/H: Yasaka Rakza 7 - Red 2.0, (for forehand) B/H: Yasaka Mark V - Black Max. My aim was to go with a bat which is a balanced one with good spin control. The other people are using just general racquets which are stiga entry level ones (not the worst) and have been used for a bit so are like 4/10 now.
    I find that when I am using those general racquets I am fine with the game. When I use mine and the opponent is using the general ones to play it is also fine. The other day the opponent was using his personal racquet and doing underspin and deep serves. I found that if I used the general racquet to return I can do it comfortably. However when I used my personal racquet I find the ball not THAT easy to control (my fault too coz I wasn't practicing with it :( ) for that serve. So here is the situation
    Situation: Deep and low underspin serve keeping very low and also bouncing low (ie 6 inches or less after SECOND bounce). When using my racquet to push it is fine. When I try to top spin or loop it is going out of the table. I was trying to USE low racquet speed (not High) to do the top spin. I believe HIGH speed is what is recommended in these cases but I just want to use low to see if I can do it rather than just powering through it. So here are my questions.
    1). Is is possible to topspin for my case above with low racquet speed or do I HAVE to use high speed? I thought that since the ball already has a spin and I am merely adding to it INSTEAD of reversing it , hence low speed should have worked. Is this correct ? Please advice
    2). Are the rubbers correct esp the FOREHAND one for such a low speed shot or should I have chosen something with MORE spin to it to do this ?
    I am sorry for the long winded question but hope you can advise. Thanks!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 5 lety +1

      The better rackets allow you to get more spin but also are harder to control when you opponent plays with spin. You do need to get used to this if you want to get better though as you cannot generate enough topspin without a good racket to be able to attack well enough to play at a high level.
      A great place to ask these questions is on the PingSkills website: www.pingskills.com/table-tennis-forum

      You generate spin by having a fast brushing contact. So you can get less backspin on your chops by not swinging through as fast and not brushing the ball as much on contact.

    Hi! Do you have any videos about how to do backhand serves for lefties? I'm currently playing doubes and have difficulty serving from the right side to the opponents right side because I am left handed and most of my spin serves are when I serve from the left side of the table. Thanks!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 9 lety

      Hi Ryan NYG,
      We have a whole series on serving for premium members on our website. The pendulum serve is a great serve for left handers in doubles because the serving position is often the same for singles and for doubles. Take a look at our website and look at the serving secrets course, and you can also see some free videos in the ask the coach section which will have some on the pendulum serve.
      Once you get used to it you'll find that it's easier for left handers. If you mostly serve from the left side and then want to use that same serve, it's really a matter of adjusting the angle of your stance before you serve.

      +Evgeny Shumilin Yes this can be a good training drill for attackers too. I like your thinking!

  • @manudehanoi
    @manudehanoi Před 9 lety

    1) at 4:02 Alois touches a point that is giving me a lot of trouble, ball height for an attacker. In order to make a topspin, how do you decide between an elbow rotation and a shoulder rotation. Meaning that if the ball is high, elbow flexing is useless and if it's low then on the contrary it's all elbow and no shoulder. That is already a choice I cant make fast enough, but I get totally lost when the height of the ball is just in the middle.
    2)If I want to attack with a topspin (and not a smash) a rather long and a bit high backspin ball, where on the bounce should I hit the ball ?
    I found out that waiting for the ball to go down a bit give a longer contact time on the rubber so that the topspin can lift the ball over the net, however waiting too much gives the ball too much downward momentum and forces the attacker to change from a topspin attack to a lobby topspin.
    Topspinning a backspin while the ball is rising is just impossible for me.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 9 lety

      Hi manu de hanoi,
      Some excellent questions there. The best place to ask these longer questions is on our website as we have more room there and check more often.
      You wouldn't normally play a topspin against a backspin ball while it is still rising. Most people wait for the top of the bounce or just after. I hope that helps.

    True, there are far fewer defenders around, but could it be that there is so little training and emphasis placed on the style? Contrast the amount of instructional videos here on CZcams for offensive table tennis play verses defensive style. Would you say that defensive instruction makes up 5% of table tennis training videos? Less?
    This does a tremendous disservice to table tennis by narrowing the possibility of styles and ways to play this game. The only reason this can be is that there is more money in promoting the offensive style of play.
    You do a great benefit to all of table tennis by not only offering the instruction that you do, but specifically by offering instruction for defenders. Great job and thank you!

      I play as a defender and i prefer chopping. So how to get better/ how i got better was to not start chopping heavy. Begin with really light chops and then make them heavier as you get better. Remember, it doesnt need to be strong to be effective. +Steve Jobs

    Hello Pingskills! I just wanted to say that i put two defensive rubbers on a blade, one is a Stiga explosion and other is a Dragon Soft Anti, It is very cool to play with pimples and Anti on a same blade :D What is your opinion of it? I practice every training with it, but earlier i had done with normal racket training :D

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 6 lety

      That sounds interesting. Most people like to have one normal rubber so you can attack when needed. But if it is working for you then that is good. It is also probably unusual so a lot of people might not be used to playing against someone with this combination.

    • @martinprintsmann6381
      @martinprintsmann6381 Před 6 lety

      Oh yeah it is, but yes like you said, it is difficult to attack with it.. But when i am learning rightly to smash then it is going to be ok i think. I know lot of people in Estonia who scares different defensive rubbers so i need to show them what i have learned :) Btw i am from Estonia and it is nice to see that you replied for me :) Keep up the work I love your channel!

    Hey! I wondering if you have any suggestions for equipment. I'm playing with butterfly Feint Long 3 (long pimples with sponge), Plaxon 450 (backside forehand rubber) and Stiga Carbon offensive right now. I'm really like the equipment but I still wonder if there still could be something even better for me. Would be really happy for a reply.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 6 lety +1

      I haven't tried the Plaxon but it sounds like a good setup for an attacking chopper. Especially if you are happy with the setup then stick with it. Often players spend too much time switching and should keep focusing on improving their technique. Good luck with your table tennis!

    Thanks for the videos. But, do defenders always need long pips for backhand rubber? Why?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 6 lety +1

      They don't need long pimples but it gives them more control as the spin from the attacks is nullified by the pimples as they don't have much friction. If you do use normal rubber then you'll be able to generate more variations of spin yourself. We discuss this a bit in our video on the backhand chop - www.pingskills.com/tutorials/advanced-strokes/backhand-chop

I play with Butterfly Tackiness chop II on the forhend and butterfly feint long III on the backhend... Feint long III is excelent for me (I tried some other LP, nothing is good as it), but I am not satisfied with tackiness... I like to attack, I have nice and fast forhend topspin, and I like to have forhend chopp with more spin... So, what is your recommendation?

    Defensive players lot of the time have the upper hand in matches. If you have chop-chop-chopped your way through the past 5 points, making a swift attack is very unexpected by your opponent, allowing you to rake in surprise points.

    @887363 Před 7 lety

    I don't know what you would call me, I use lp on my back hand and am working on becoming a strong forehand looper/attacker however due to the fact that it is very difficult to continue to play strong offense shots to long pip, which forces an opponent to either miss or push most of the time, I am starting to learn how to attack opponents pushes with underspin, and although it is not as easy as playing a topspin shot with my forehand and the attack is not very strong, it is a very ugly ball for my opponent to have to deal with

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 7 lety

      You can't generate your own spin with the long pimples. It just doesn't have the friction. If someone gives you a heavy backspin ball then your pimples will send it back with some topspin though. If you want to play attacking topspin strokes all the time then you'll need inverted rubber.

      Hi Dan Brodith,
      It sounds like you are progressing well. You may just need to develop your skills more. If you are an attacking player then you may be better focusing on improving your return so you can get the ball back short so your opponents can't attack first. If you attack first you will make it difficult for them. The chop stroke is more useful if you are a defensive player.
