He is certainly a great player, but what I really like is the demeanor while playing. No ridiculous "chos", or screaming, or fist pumping. He is just cool and efficient and quiet. He is intimidating in this way.

Niwa's playing style defies everything the coach have taught me and it works.
it works... ocasionally. And it earn him... few points. Just because he's a good player and things he does work out, doesn't mean those things are the right thing to do.
Pretty sure it goes against some of the things his coach tells him as well
TheVampB yea probably but he overdoes it because of his playful carefree personality so he can make some entertaining points but he won't be the best because he plays what he feels like playing, not what he should play to win.

Everytime I see Koki Niwa plays, it always reminds me of Waldner. I think Niwa just evolved Waldner's blocking style to fit with modern table tennis.
