First, be clear: College used to be free or nearly free. So, premise this entire conversation on the fact that college has gotten shamefully expensive. The States used to subsidize much of the cost and colleges used to be more responsible with costs. So, before we can have a conversation about the cost benefit of college, first address COST.

Depending on the college and where you live it still can be mostly free. Financial aid such as FAFSA is an option and community and state college are often way more affordable. The vaule of many degrees are not what they use to be and the risk of taking on loans/debt is a problem tho.

  • @dariusmichel4435

Alyssa and Sarah were both on point for this one. It's not that people don't have dreams of higher education and doing a career they want to do, it's that people simply, just can not afford it so they have to do something more practical and cost effective and sometimes that may not even be a possibility.
The simple fact of the matter is a single semester at the most cost effective schools is somewhere between 5-8k and the majority of lower middle class and poor families can't even afford that much, even with grants (which are shrinking and the qualifications to apply for one are becoming stricter and stricter) and scholarships (which come with thier own set of issues from being highly competitive and often times are still not enough to cover a fraction of the cost for university)
Not to mention ever increasing student debt which is practically unpayable because wages have been stagnant across the board for over 2 decades and have not kept up with external economic factors and increasing interest rates of student loans.
All of this is to say, it's no wonder that people in each new generation are choosing to largely forego higher education and look into other alternatives such as trade school, becoming streamers, nsfw jobs, or looking to climb the corporate ladder at what would be considered less than desirable entry level positions.

They could major in electronics, plumbing, mechanics, beautician, etc. My Dad was very impressed with the education of students in that school. He praised them for their knowledge and dedication since they were doing whatever they wanted to be trained in in addition to a general high school curriculum. I know that a college education opens doors that may have been closed, however, I strongly believe that there should be vocational training available for those students who are not interested in college. I live in Guatemala, but have studied in the U.S. College there is too expensive. Public university in Guatemala is about 50 dollars a month and the most expensive private universities are maybe 800 dollars a month. My university here wouldn't ask us to buy books. They gave us photocopies or access to other resources so that we didn't have to spend. College in the U.S has become a very lucrative business and I don't think that will change until people start electing leaders that are willing to make those changes. The chance for a higher education shouldn't be a privilege. In Guatemala, it's more affordable but for someone who lives here private universities are still kind of expensive and the public university has its issues. I'd love to finally finish my degree but I haven't been able to afford it yet.
However, in the U.S I'd never be able to afford it and I am sure that millions of Americans feel the same. Practical experience helps, but the sad truth is that people do treat you differently when they realize you don't have a degree.

Even with a bachelor's degree people are getting hired at $13.00 an hour, perhaps $15.00. Getting a college degree doesn't mean you will get paid what you're worth and deserve.

I absolutely one hundred percent believe college degrees aren’t the end all be all anymore. The reality is that back in the day for the elder generations life was very different. You got your degree and a job at a place that you’d most likely spend your life til retirement at, got married had kids owned a house. And now it’s not like that. College isn’t the end all be all anymore it doesn’t carry the same weight it once did. I believe some fields absolutely need schooling and extensive schooling at that. I don’t wanna go in a procedure to save my life with someone who doesn’t know where to operate on me. But not all fields now need that. And the one thing I’m thankful for with Covid is that due to a lot of jobs being so short handed they’ve now opened up jobs that once needed a degree for and in place offered on the job training.

I agree with all the points with one correction. Personal debt does not transfer to another individual. If there is an estate, creditors can request their payment through the courts. States with probate laws allow for the deceased debt to be paid. The Fair Debt Laws explains in detail, and probate states do the same. This is just a little explanation to Whoopi's comment on debt being passed on. I enjoyed this topic.

Though I appreciate the discussion, I feel it operates on a somewhat false dichotomy, as practicality is arguably somewhat subjective. For example, a Religious Studies degree may seem somewhat impractical, at least compared to an Engineering degree, but what if the student embarking on such an academic venture wants to enter seminary, go to divinity school, or work for a faith-based nonprofit afterward? In that case, what may look impractical at first glance becomes quite practical, given that individual’s specific professional goals and sense of vocation.

One is getting a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (practical) the other Bachelor of Science Computer Science (also practical) they both are passionate about these fields so all I can say, is education like Sunny Hostin gave me an edge to get the type of employment I wanted. Some of my siblings did not go to college to get a university degree but have other skills that have led them to what many would considered a successful life you pick up your bootstraps and if you have ambition, he will get where you want to go with or without a degree. I personally like the fact that a degree opens your mind like Joy said and it turns you on to great thinkers. For those who cannot afford a university education there’s the public library, the Internet and book stores go and educate yourself.

I wasn't from a wealthy family and I didn't qualify for a Pell Grant either because I had 3 jobs, to take care of my family. A college education offers a very wide diversity in job opportunities with enhanced critical thinking analysis . So yes practical training is very important but we shouldn't' compare apples with oranges either, when it depends on the complexity of the job.

Ofcourse an Obsumands office ( I think I spelled that wrong) and other things which does trickle down to the student who's tuition pays for it. But schools like harvard, USC and big names they collect so much money from grants, alumni and god knows whatever else that they should be practically giving out free education. It's trendy to bash college now but no one would dare go to a surgeon who wasn't formally educated or drive across a bridge that wasn't built without an educated engineer's blueprint. We need people who are formally educated and as Sunny pointed out on average they make MORE than those who are not. That's the cold hard truth. The cost of college must be addressed but the reality is that a society needs people to do jobs that require a high degree of education and skill which are jobs that provide economic mobility. People just have to be sensible in what they choose to study. For so long people have encouraged people to just "follow their passion" instead of doing what makes sense financially. Both trade school and college only works if someone is studying something that will allow them to gain skills that help them become financially independent. Not sure why people pretend that there aren't plenty of people that have also found themselves in debt and dire financial straits as a result of technical and trade schools. People need to think wisely in what skill they train in with trade schools and what they study in college.
