I am a "white evangelical christian" and have never nor will I ever vote for Trump. We are to be kind and loving and gentle to EVERYONE...wonderful interview and I completely agree with Tim.

I have his book on tape and it is absolutely spot on about evangelical Christians. I am an evangelical Christian and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. I will NEVER align myself with the likes of Trump or any pastor who supports Trump or the hatred portrayed by Republicans or anyone who forgets Jesus told us to care for the poor, the sick, the downtrodden, the foreigner, and to love your brother as yourself. Christ is the centerpiece of the gospel.

Wow, I must get this book. I never watch The View, but happened upon this video clip. Tim articulated so much of my thoughts about the extremism and damage done by Evangelicals who have basically turned politics into a religion. This was brilliant in its explanation and insight without being disrespectful or contemptuous. Well done!

As someone who grew up in a very religious household, I can say that video he shows at rallies is one of the most blasphemous things I've ever seen. I don't think he ever went inside a church when he was President. Clearly these people forgot the verse that says 'Beware of False Prophets that come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly they are ravening wolves". I hope Tim keeps reminding everyone with this book

I grew up evangelical (now lapsed) and do not recognize what the church has become. The book is excellent, and should be required reading for every Christian in America.
It’s really refreshing to hear the viewpoint of a practicing Christian who has expressed his opinions in such a way that it is clear that he has employed critical thinking along with empathy and eloquence to explain the current zeitgeist.
Times are terrifying when ppl cant see the difference between good vs evil. This guy was so well spoken and he hit the nail on the head with everything.

@kk-ym5tc I can't speak for anyone else but as a Christian who knows that scripture says "none but God are good" and "all have fallen short" yet it still gives us ways to grow from glory to glory and also gives instructions and even outlines characteristics and lists the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 all of which Trump violates every single time he speaks, it says it's by their fruits ye shall know them and in Luke 6:45 says "...out of the abundance of his heart his mouth speaks" I watch how candidates speak and compare it to scripture paying little to no attention to ANY newscast. The bible condemns pride for which sin Lucifer was cast out of heaven. It condemns a haughty spirit, mean and demeaning, filthy and corrupt speaking and says the power of death and life are actually in the tongue and those who,jndulge in it shall eat the fruit thereof which seems clear to me as to the number of Trumps indictments is what's happening to him now. So as a Christian who actually reads and tries to follow scripture I think the choice is pretty clear.

I listen to this book on audiobooks while I’m driving and sometimes I felt like I had to pull over to the side of the road. Absolutely stunning and heartbreaking. It’s not a comfortable read if your philosophy is Christian Nationalism. But sometimes you need to be uncomfortable to grow.
As an evangelical this book is exactly what we need right now not only in the US but worldwide as we see right wing extremism creep into other countries.

There are evangelicals speaking up on this. You can look up several documentaries that cover christian nationalism in the last 2 years. And there are a lot of pastors that speak just like this man does. There are especially black pastors speaking on this because this issue is a white nationalist issue. The very thing republicans accused Obama of doing with pastor wright and his "Black Nationalist Movement". In which he speaks up against this issue as well. Trump is just as demonic as these women or more so! He promoted a video that labeled him the "Good Shepherd for MANKIND who will never leave you nor forsake you" (a quote from the video). A title only Jesus Christ can claim and he is the son of God! That is full on blasphemy! If Trump had the fear of God or love of God in his heart, he would be appalled and denounce such a video. Instead he used it in Iowa for his campaign (they showed a short clip of that video here @ 4:36 mins. If they had shown the whole video you would hear the "Good Shepherd" quote). The Antichrist is not going to be a secular atheist from modern culture. He will come from the religious community and set himself up as equal with God as if he were the Christ (the Christ-imposter). I am a Christian who goes to a church that believes in the Jesus's Great Commission, which is to tell others about Him. That makes me evangelical. I am a Never Trumper. The man is evil. It breaks my heart that some Christians have made him their idol - and a deeply flawed one at that! I want to say thank you for having this author on your show. I know more Christians that believe the way he does than the way Trumpers belief. My church had a few people leave who wanted the pastor to shout Trump's praise from the pulpit. My pastor refused. I pray that Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike vote in primaries against Trump so he cannot be on the ballot.

I so appreciate his capacity to communicate what the evangelicals are thinking and their motivations, because I have spent the last 8 years completely perplexed how they have managed to deify Trump.
Not perplexing at all. Trump vanquished both the Clinton and Bush criminal dynasties. He kept Merrick Garland off of the Supreme Court. The border by comparison today, was sealed shut when he was in office and he made it so that irresponsible killing of newborns is at least not officially sanctioned by the US government (leftist love to kill babies instead of upsetting their stomachs by taking a pill).
But most important he’s not Biden. Something tells me that you will still be forever perplexed!

I was in EV churches when I was younger. EV/ Fed scientists taught us to ignore science. Social justice was never mentioned, yet we were told we were persecuted because of faith.. Women were taught to submit to men, and pray for them. I understand how they went for agent orange.

Being a Christian Nationalist and being a Christian have very little in common. Christians worship God and believe in Jesus Christ while Christian Nationalists worship Cesear and power and only except those who can be swayed to give themselves up for the word and cause of a man and take the mark of corruption.
One of my best friends from childhood is Evangelical Christian. I am Quaker. We don’t ever discuss politics or religion because our positions are so different. What scares me the most about her and other Christians like her is that she “hates to do research.” She reads her monthly Christian magazine, never listens to radio or watches TV or looks at articles online. She lives in a complete bubble, presumably voting for whomever the other Evangelicals support, no questions asked. To me that feels like she has shirked her duty to be a responsible citizen, which is to look at the evidence about each candidate. She refuses to do that. That’s why I have basically lost respect for Evangelicals in general.
Thats sad because even the bible says in 1John 4:1 " do not believe every spirit but test the spirit to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world"

What I think is interesting is that Tim leans into the person asking him questions. It's as if he's actively listening to their question.

Reading this book too... I too an Evangelical Preacher Kid and former Evangelical Missionary. This book is the best book I have read on this subject.

He's very bright and well spoken, but what we really need in this day and age is for intelligent, reasonable people like him to abandon the fairy tales they were taught as children and just live their lives without the shackles of religion and a magical man in the sky that almost certainly does not exist.

I grew up evangelical, but got away from it as an adult because of what I sensed as hatefulness and judgement. However, Tim and this interview reminded me of the core of my faith, the values of love and kindness that my mom taught me and that I see in many more people beyond the Trump supporters. That keeps the flame of my faith alive!
Yet love and kindness are not religious values. They are human ones.

Never let a man or a woman keep you from your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Never idolize anyone including a pastor, President, family member, spouse or child. I learned the hard way but I learned.

He became a family friend. He said we are all only human and make mistakes. Now I just look for churches where there are less mistakes. They are there just harder to find. Please don't categorize all Christians as MEGA. We ARE NOT!

This interview is so accurate, relevant, and needed! I grew up in the southern baptist church in Tennessee. I still hold onto my beliefs in God & Jesus. However, I no longer “fit in” with the church or agree with the things they now stand for (unfortunately that’s the case with just about any church around here). I am not a conservative and I am not a trump supporter. It’s been a struggle for me not believing what the church now seems to believe & figuring out my own beliefs/place in the world. It is a huge problem for Christianity in general what is happening with the church and politics currently. The church no longer seems to stand for or believe what Jesus actually taught.
Yes. And it's making a lot of people take a step back and really look at the religion, and whether its claims are justified by anything except the claims themselves. People are leaving Christianity in droves. I think it's a good thing.
I know you get peace and love out of it, but Christian theology is fundamentally built on the idea that you are a worthless, depraved, bad person who deserves to be tortured, by your very nature. It says that you can never take credit for your good achievements, but must take full credit for your mistakes. It says that you can't trust your own thoughts, and that the world is ending soon so there's little point in improving or preserving it. You by yourself are never good enough. This is a level of toxicity that I think we would all be better off putting in the dustbin of historical mythology. We can have all its benefits without all the shame or cycles of abuse.

Like so many I have been perplexed (can’t think of a stronger word at the moment) about why Evangelicals support Trump. Astonishing to me. Listening to the interview with Tim Alberta yesterday was enlightening. I bought his book and I’m devouring it.
I personally am gobsmacked. Like perplexed squared. I hear you.
I attended the marble collegiate church 1-2 times a week from 1995-2010. Trump was a “member” and mentioned Marble while campaigning in 2016. I saw him in church ONE TIME in 15 years.
I’ll have to watch this. I’d like to hear it explained. I live around a ton of these people. Half of my extended family are Trump Christians. These are people who have had a leg up in life, but are extremely angry at the very thought of helping anyone else up- especially people who are not like them. They truly believe they are the most patriotic, even though they don’t understand basic rights or the way laws work or anything that pertains to government or civics. They believe they are the most superior people in God’s eyes, because they go to church and read the Bible. I’ve yet to meet a kind and respectful super-Christian. They love their symbols; the flag, the Bible, and guns. I wasn’t surprised at all when Trump flags and signs went up all over the town I live in during the 2016 election. Not a shock at all. They are just like him. Hateful, want THEIR rights respected and obliged, but want others’ rights taken away, they are fake, and they make money egregiously. They prefer to be told what to think & believe instead of thinking for themselves.
