Just found your channel great content and your comments are straight forward and on point. I am purchasing a new Tohatsu 50 hp tiller for my 17 fiberglass skiff. It’s just a simple skiff for coastal fishing island hopping crabbing camping and setting nets. But will serve my purpose well. Thank you for your insight. I plan to do a progress video as I put my project together.

Glad I could help, a 50 Suzuki is certainly an excellent motor. I would take into consideration if you personally intend to do the maintenance or if you’ll be taking it to a dealer. Lind story short if doing it yourself it’ll be easier to find and obtain service parts for Suzuki vs. tohatsu. That said, I do have a list of the tohatsu service parts as well as how to perform it in a other video. Best of luck on your decision!

Great vid. I just picked up a '23 Merc 40 on an older mint 16ft Sea Nymph thats just under 500lbs dry weight, was wondering if it was going to be too heavy/too much for this boat. Looks like your 1548 sits just fine, and I assumed with a 16p SS prop I can get mine to 40mph too. Right now its got a 4 blade and guy said it only does 28mph....lol Im guessing its a 12 or 13 but will be great to have as spare or 3 people fishing.

Absolutely certainly doesn't help to have an extra prop. It should be fine on that. 16-footer I'm not too familiar with seeing nips. I believe they are fiberglass correct? The weight on the Mercury's are certainly a lot heavier than the hotsus but for that size boat it should be okay

Nice job on your videos. I have your boat and wanted to do the same upgrade. What I found is while yes a 23 inch transom usually requires a 25 inch outboard these sportsman hulls have an angled transom. The proper fit is a 20 inch. Your challenge is weight distribution with that 4 stroke and the short boat. I bet if you had a 40 Etec 2 stroke you would have far less of an issue. The 2 stroke is lighter. Anyway enjoy your post.

I have the same boat and I thought the 25hp mercury just wasn't doing. After having this boat for over 5 years, I finally learned why it was so slow. Little did I know, grizzly boats are notorious for having the flotation foam in boat to soak up water, adding several hundreds of pounds of water weight. Overall, it was not the mercury 25hp the problem but the cheap foam tracker puts in its boats that soak up hundreds of pounds of water over time. Sorry not a grizzly issue all boats under 20' have this problem. Poor water drainage is the issue, if you store the boat level out in open and it rains or snows it has no way to drain the bildge.
