Even if Steve didnât have access to his huge damage combos and kill confirms, the ability to cancel out of hitstun and punish your opponent for it is the definition of game breaking.

@@LordNebilim granted, at least for shulk's tech it has its limits. he can only do it if he has any monado arts out of cooldown and even then he has to consider sacrificing an art that could be crucial later in the match.
I understand that there are characters with frame 1 escape options, Snake and Duck Hunt for example. But even those options donât give you TRUE 0-death combos.

Just goes to show how much these crazy techs impact the game. I'm all for crazy characters with gimmicks, I love rivals of aether, but the sentence "is he even playing smash anymore?" applies to Steve more than any character ever before and I don't think it's healthy for the game

Realistically, with the smash team either disbanded or working on other projects, there is no shot we get another balance patch. Just business wise, getting the staff together for the dev work and testing just isn't viable at this point. The only shot we get any patch is if steve players find a way to consistently crash the game and start spamming it on elite to the point that the game becomes unplayable for casuals, and even then the most we'd get is a hotfix to prevent the crash and nothing else.
I agree. Though, is there precedence for a AAA game getting a patch years after official support ended due to players finding an online-crashing bug? If so, thatâs hilarious

It's weird because alot of Steve tech is just weird glitches that would have been patched out given we still had balance updates. Without patches he is basically the only character with glitches that are genuinely useful.
Glitch fixes are done outside of balance updates in many other games. It's kind of insane how good of a job was done on so many fighters to Steve come out shitty.

WhyDo's "unintended mechanics" comparison to Wavedashing is flawed. This form of free hitstun cancelling is exclusive to Steve, and obviously not supposed to happen. Wavedashing applies to all characters and can be used by anyone. If you could only wavedash on Fox, people would rightly want to ban him.

No one would ban fox for having wave dash even if he was the only char with wave dash because you could argue that you can learn the match up and understand how to punish it but if fox was the only charakter in melee that could do a crouch cancel he would get banned because its the same thing with steve he can cancel hitstun completely but others cant
@@TritoXD If fox was the only character in melee to have wavedashing, he would probably be FAR too strong for the rest of the cast to deal with.
Wave dashing is essential for a lot of characters to effectively counter fox because it allows them ways to actually play good neutral against him. If they didnt have that, their neutral would be significantly worse against a very explosive character.
If fox was the only character with wavedashing, he would probably have been banned by now. Wavedashing being a tool everyone can uses means that characters at least actually have tools to counteract Fox's own wavedashing which keeps the meta more in line.
This is the straw that breaks the camels back. Getting punished for winning neutral is taking it to far. Character has got to go, only reasonable option at this point.

I feel like Steve is going to be like Brawl Meta Knight, where some tournaments may ban him or the ones that do allow Steve to be played will have rules against using any game breaking tech. This was the same case for Meta Knight who could stall under the stage and use his down b to disappear infinitely.
The dimensional cape bug was really easy to spot though, Steve tech is a lot harder to moderate

I don't understand why players dislike bans. Banning things is a normal part of any competitive environment.
The idea of playing with your favorite and of wanting 3 to do good is the issue with bans as well as the fact that it might be hard to set up.
The thing is, those things are moot. Steve hate is being a Smash fan, and that tech can be done accidentally and is subtle.

Steve is going to be the best character in Smash history. The fact that he does shit like this NOW while still having so much potential makes this absolutely clear to me.
He's a platform fighting game character who can freely and easily manipulate platforms.
Steve should have never been in Smash - rather, Steve from Minecraft should be part of a new platformer fighting game where everyone gets to place blocks like they were in Minecraft.

I've been waiting for this day, ever since ive seen mew2king's vids on him 2 years ago and even before i always expected there to be massive potential with the near limitless creative options you'd have with his block placing, used to watch his tournaments for this very reason to see its abstract potential gradually take concrete shape. I'm glad its potential has come to light and also find it quite enjoyable in the face of people with a lack of imagination. Looking at how people used to call him low-tier at one point is completely laughable now and i'm all here for it (like a 'i told you so'), too bad it progressed to such a point where (what i can only assume to be) exploits have been found aswell which made him get banned.
Though i'm still in love with the idea of what was initially a meme (sort of underdog status) character having such crazy creative potential being slowly exposed to the point of being nr. 1. Seeing its potential being progressively untapped has been very satisfying and cool to see, like a vision coming true.

My main concern is how this affects competing for prize money for some people. I mean imagine signing up for a tournament with a $100,000 prize, practising day and night to improve your neutral and combo game. Only to lose to some dude who plays a character who doesnt play neutral the same as everyone else and literally cheated the game through hitstun canceling and beating you for it. I feel bad for players who genuinely like Steve as a character in smash bros., but I think that tech is way overpowered and too vague to detect in normal circumstances.
That last drag down to blast zone tech is hilarious.

The game hasnt been patched in years and it likely wont be. Nintendo isnt making more money by fixing Steve they are probably just working on the next Smash game.

As someone who advocated to keep Steve unbanned this new tech will actually make him unbeatable with zero counter play so if you actually break through his defence you can still get punished for GETTING GOOD that's a huge no no.
It wouldnt make him unbeatable with zero counterplay, but it would shift the balance so far into Steve's favor with yet ANOTHER thing you constantly have to worry about that its just unfair.
The risk/reward for fighting against steve with this tech is just stupid. Its not IMPOSSIBLE to beat, but its completely unbalanced.

If Steve is to be banned, it should be sooner rather than later. I know people are afraid to jump the gun, but the longer we take the harder it will be to ban him. Meta Knight was basically impossible to ban because so many players played him by the time they tried to, we should not make that mistake again.

It's because that person who put in time into the chracter might not want to compete anymore because they usually want to play with their chracter they like and stuck with. Which is why there's a hesitation with banning

Sakurai himself said Steve was a challenge code wise, even if there was another DLC for the team to rework the previous characters, fixing all these issues would be very demanding and not cost effective. Sadly, this is the price we had to pay in order to have a character like Steve in the game
With the new tech I think it's justifiable to ban him.

They need to make one more patch to fix Steve and maybe Kazuya (as much as that pains me). Maybe make Sephiroth a little better and get rid of Mewtwo's tail hurt box

I study smash so much I have a Plex server with saved CZcams break downs of EVERY character ( Iâm obsessive I know ) I play DBZ, KOF, MK and about 8k hours in smash. I hated being told to just learn counter play - never found it to be that simple for Steve. With the amount of information need - especially for new players. Seems unreasonable for newer players to have to search the entire web for niche counter play.
My main reason for really wanting some action taken is the amount of information you HAVE to know for a single character. Normally a âfreestyleâ character isnât a problem because they have a few things that make them weak. So what are Steveâs ?
It use to be just donât approach - but they get diamonds or gold and you loose anyway
It use to be destroy crafting table - but whatâs stopping them from mining off stage ? How many characters can stop that ? Not to mention itâs impossible to keep someone in disadvantage the ENTIRE game. They are still going to get resources until they arenât holding their controller.
What are his bad stages ? Ahh right. Also doesnât matter much. Steve can still box a bit and with gold mine cart, not the best option to go for a smaller stage.

This is kinda an exciting development, it's like melee fox/top tiers where new tech is found, except this is at an even faster pace, sad there aren't other characters in ultimate with this level and amount of broken tech, broken tech is fun most of the time ngl

I think the knowledge of bugs and the gameplay reveal show, that implementing Steve was a pretty expansive undertaking. Which really needs another patch. If they become an issue for fair competition. Then a ban sounds necessary.

Didn't think I'd say it, as I've been a heavy proponent of ban-no-one, but after seeing this tech I think it's clearly the most practical solution.
Imo just knowing this is possible makes the character ban worthy
I saw someone say that banning this tech is equivalent to when people talked about banning wave dashing in melee which couldnât be further from the truth wave dashing a movement tech that is extremely important to melee players the Steve tech is a literal way to negate hitstun they are not even close to the same no character in smash history hell fighting game history has ever had the ability to just say fuck you to hitstun and no character under any circumstance should have this ability even if itâs unintentional
...mahvel baby. But in all seriousness, I've seen the tech more and there's a lot more going into it. From what I've seen it only occurs in the air, not on the ground. It's not a guarantee and some moves ignore it. I think it'll easily get countered and played around with like most of the other smash games.
He is however much worse than Smash 4 Bayo imo. Bayo could just deny mixup you had and combo you into the air. Steve can just deny you service.

Here is my take, i main kirby and pit, i have a bad MU. But the most annoying thing is that even when i outsmart the oponent by two stocks, im at disadvatage because they can just kill me from zero, so i have to go lucas (my thirt) so i can camp in order to have a chance, is not fun, i dont play lucas like that, i rather do snake combos or nair/fair spacing. But no, i can just spam pk fire because is the only thing to keep me alive, steve is not only toxic, it leads to toxic playstyles as well

He should be banned. And we can not wait for results because of something Larry Lurr said. If we wait too long, we'll just get into this big argument about it and nothing will happen. We also can't wait for Nintendo because look at what happened with smash 4. After bayo was released and there was a final patch, no more patches at all. Steve is quite literally a broken character both in rankings and in the fundamental aspect of smash.
Also, if Ultimate is ruined, then Smash is basically a 2000s game given its longest-lasting games are Melee competitively and Brawl for The Subspace Emissary, with all else after Brawl being forgotten, simply because there was always a broken character.

Sakurai and nintendo really should consider a patch for Steve. Or else we would need to find some clever way to fix it ourselves such as with modding, which I know nintendo hates. Maybe if we mod patch it Nintendo will either understand the need for modding and/or patch it themselves. We can only hope.
All I know is every Steve I play online just mines and fishes for mine cart exclusively it drives me insane

There is some precedent to this: Melee has quite a bit of tournament banned tech. Ultimate could probably do the same.
The problem is that most of Steve's tech is hard to spot and logistically impossible to keep track of. Every tournament would require going through potentially hundreds of games to spot a 1 second instance of Steve doing something forbidden. And what would you do then? Replay the game? Auto-disqualify the player? It's just way too much to try to organize across the entire scene. Banning the character is a lot more feasible.

I agree with a lot said in this video! I definitely think that we should as a community come together and ban Steve. Although steve tech is super sick and these players have a lot of skill, Steve makes competitive smash impossible. These things are just impossible to play against and will make the advantage gap between playing Steve and not playing Steve so big that competition will be impossible. We were so close to a somewhat balanced game but unfortunately something like this was inevitable. Hope we can find a solution!
