  • At 5:11 PM after a severe thunder storm passed through the area, the Syosset FD received a report of smoke from a house. Soon after the dispatcher started receiving numerous calls reporting a house on fire. Chief 5803 was quickly on scene and transmitted a working fire. Due to quick work by first due companies, the fire which was located in the attic, was under control after about a half hour. E587 and TL582 were first due.

I was on a Suffolk County fire dept 1968-1972.. we were told very explicitly never to break a window unless the officer or chief in charge gave us a direct order. I was taught that was excessive, expensive, unnecessary damage. We were supposed to try and open doors and open the windows if needed. I was on 6 fire departments during my 48 year career, vollie, paid and military. I can’t recall ever breaking a window unless it was totally and absolutely needed. Sometimes I think guys get carried away and just want to do something, and breaking a window(s) seems like that’s the easiest act they can do. They had enough FF go into the house and could’ve opened the back door, and opened windows from the interior. Otherwise it was a good attack and stop.

Absolutely no excuse for taking the windows on the the C/3 side! This was obviously an attic fire, with very little smoke damage to 1st floor!

Fire in the attic..NO reason to start breaking widows after the fire is under control, if you have to start taking out windows remove the whole thing!!

I think the officer on the first piece in should have done a better job reading the smoke conditions when arriving, that would have let him there was no need to smash all the windows out and that the fire was in the attic!!! Just an opinion of someone with experience in the fire service! Other then that it was a smooth operation. The great thing about these videos, it’s always a great way to learn and grow as apartment.

How embarrassing to see. So much excessive damage for a small attic fire. Breaking stuff just to break it.

A lot of lessons here - mostly I would like to say to the men and women in overhaul conditions - BREATH CLEAN AIR with your SCBA during overhaul !. The AIR IS FREE. Do not overhaul without it !!!!!!! Be strong enough to lead from this view point. It is pointless to wear the SCBA and NOT BREATH CLEAN AIR FROM IT !!! The off gassing toxins in that house ARE DEADLY. In Solidarity

So you would rather they not be thorough and leave embers behind to rekindle the fire?
Every bit of that drywall is going to have to be removed anyway due not just to the fire, smoke, and water...
But also to inspect and replace wiring, as well as insulation, replace fixtures, insulation, etc
