    Brilliant Mark, I've been waiting for this one!...great to see that you are also back in the tropicals too...Looking forward to seeing more soon...by the way, I followed your "Breeding bettas" and am very pleased to say that my first brood was around 40-50 I lost 4 and now all the males are Jarred as juvies (27) and the local fish shop is buying them off me...I couldn't have done without your excellent videos...More, please Master Breeder. :-)

    thanks for this. Google's go to answer for 'breeding otos' is 'Breeding ottos is hard, catch them wild', lol. This helps a lot more. I remember scooping up a load of dirt and algae from the river near some rocks a few years ago and adding it to my tank and I saw one of these. I couldn't believe my luck but unfortunately my gold fish swallowed him whole.

    Great topic Mark,
    I have one fry, 4 weeks old and still going strong!
    The males will change colour into some silverish shade when in breeding mood.
    I feed them high protain veggie pellets, algaewafers, red paprika & cucumber.
    The fry is kept in a separate container in the main tank and grows on Sera fry food & infusoria-sticks.

    • @Irishhamsterman
      @Irishhamsterman Před 2 lety +1

      How do you feed the paprika?

    • @merijn1975
      @merijn1975 Před 2 lety

      @@Irishhamsterman That is the same procedure as with the other vegetables. I just rins the outer skin, cut a piece and put it on a skewer. After two-three days all red will be eaten and only the transparant outer layer remains which you can remove. I do not boil or blanch anything. Just give the otos some time.
      Good luck!
      (I tried yellow and green paprika as well, they do eat it but not nearly as eager as the red ones)

    Nice job, that tank is beautiful. I breed in 3 setups and found black eco complete provided more surface area for algae to remain they absolutely die from particulates when young and one would want to avoid sands, stratum or fluorite. Taking a break now but I got 15 spawnings from my setup. Nothing wrong with a bare bottom I just saw more fatalities when I used mine. I attributed it to line of site stress. Great channel I look forward to checking out more of your videos.

    Really looking forward to this series. I've got a male and 2 females breeding constantly in a 10 gallon planted shrimp tank. Unfortunately they're mostly dying off at about a week old. They are on pool filter sand over garden soil. I had no idea substrate could clog their gills. Learned something new already. Love your videos!

    Fantastic video, as always Mark! I might have missed it, but could you tell us a bit more about the setup please? Specifically, what size tank?, Was it an Oase canister filter you are using? And if so, how are you preventing any possible fry from getting sucked in?, one more, the lightning looks great, for both algae growth and the plants, what kind of lights are you using? Thanks again, I really enjoy your channel, Great work!!

    Hip hip hooray!!!! magic words!!! Cycled the tank with a bit of cooked prawn!!! One of my Betta fish died and I am preparing the tank again for another fish.....he was not diseased - so only changed the water and renewed substrate as I wanted gravel instead of sand - kept my plants without washing them, and did not clean out filter sponge - HOPING my cycle would not be disturbed! But I do believe it has been - been feeding the tank with flakes - but all water tests are 0......believe I should at least have some nitrates showing - always did before.......so now have a prawn in the tank - 2 days or so ago. How long should that take to cause ammonia????? Hope your little Blenny is making a home and laying eggs by now!!! K
