Maybe you could buy some of that opaque film to put on the glass, let's light in but he can't see the fish through the glass , he had that look in his eye 'I'll be back ' ☺
We have them on our pond sometimes too, they usually show up at spring. My guess it that some birds that are scattered everywhere during winter make a small stop while flying to their breeding colony. Didnt manage to make a dent into the goldfish colony since they reproduce like wildfire, bust they always take the ones that stick out. For example, if I put a blue shubunkin in with the normal red goldfish, they will aim for the shubunkin. So I just stick with normal red goldfish.
They hate shiney reflective things, like mirrors, hanging cds and disco balls. Normally a mirror is good, placed where the bird will see its own reflection if it attemps to get to the pond, it will think its another heron and shit itself
if it was a older bird I think it would be able to poke holes straight through the cover and make a nice big hole like they do in ice I've seen them ice fishing many times using bread as bait and even mimicking the sounds of bait like sweet corn with gravel they started breading her in the 80s I have enjoyed following their progress fishing along side them
Have you tried running clear fishing line across the top Mark? These birds cannot negotiate the fishing line AND concentrate on the fish below at the same time.
Had one that kept coming to the garden every morning at the same time, it cleared out the neighbours goldfish pond and was trying to get to our koi. Luckily we have nets on our pond and its above ground. I spent better part of 2 weeks waiting around every morning and as soon as it landed I let the dogs out to chase it off! Hasn't returned since!
These little blue heron are aggressive. I had one take out my fancy goldfish and he lined them up in a row, I ran outside and he flew up in a tree, squawking at me. I put my goldfish back in the pond they were ok.
They don't like reflective stuff like mirrors, and hanging disco balls, CDs etc. Normally a couple mirrors dotted round the pond keeps them away, they see their reflection and think its another bird.
Good video Mark and a shear coincidence that this afternoon I see a heron eyeing up my fish from the top of our cabin, first time since April, I guess there food is getting scarce and resorting to pond fishing. I’ve tried everything, fake herons and eagles, floating balls with bird of prey eyes on, CD swinging from the fences for reflection, even jungle bells tied on to them. I’ve resorted to making a contraption with plumping pipes tied to netting to easily remove/cover the middle section of the pond as and when, and the sides criss crossed with fishing line tied around eye hooks. It worked since April but let’s see if this new heron is trouble - hopefully not 🤞🏻
Could you put some cling window frosting up on the windows? Like the kind they use on bathroom windows, so it let's the light though but you can't see through it? Then he wouldn't be able to see the koi through the window. Edited to add: Maybe you could even put some of the stuff on the underside of the pond cover, to frost it so the koi aren't as visible.
He’s a persistent little chap. The ones we get fly off at the slightest hint of people about, I’m surprised he hung around so long after you put the sheet over. I would definitely do something to either obscure or strengthen your window glass 🤨. It’s a worry.
Definitely a juvenile bird and looks weak, had difficulty flying to fence height. Herons need plenty of space to fly in and out, looking at the final shots your garden it is between the houses and some tall trees, thus making it difficult for the heron to get out. I think I’d go outside with a broom and help it out of your garden, so it has to go elsewhere. Stay safe and well 👍🏻
Hi Mark. Really enjoy your videos. Very informative. Just a quick one. Can i use Privet hedges in my tanks. If so. Will i be able to oven bake them to quicken the process of using them.? Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work.
If your lucky like me a huge flock of crows are great at getting rid of herons, don't know why but the crows round me absolutely hate them, watched them kill 3 so far literally forcing them down in flight, its been about 4 years since I last saw one which before the crows moving in I would see them quite regularly
Sure looks like a young bird that hasn't learned about naked monkeys and their boom sticks! My favorite was the the one koi dealer that was in my area in Miami chasing a night heron with a shot gun in his under wear screaming that he didn't care if he went to jail that bird killed a couple grand worth of koi. I also remember the bitterns that would fly into the fish farm the moment the African cichlid guy left. Now those birds will find fish food and drop it into the pools to make fishing easier, lacking that they will drop twigs into the water to lure fish into range. With the rainbow fish my biggest problems were raccoons that learned how to pull out stand pipes to drain the pools. The main bird problem was with diving birds like kingfishers. The worst was after hurricane Andrew a cormorant got blown into the farm and I Was chasing it down since its wings were waterlogged while it regurgitated all the red rainbows it had eaten.
Using stuff you no doubt have to hand - maybe criss cross some fishing line to a decent height mission impossible style above the outside pond cover to prevent the heron landing? Might be an idea in the near future to put a glass surround [taller than a heron's reach] rising up from the inner side of the pond's edge leaving nowhere to stand, it may be able to perch above but won't be able to strike, I think heron won't enter water beyond their depth. Great Video btw, that bird's got some neck going after yer koi!
That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw him trying to get the fish through the floor, how about the window, would he be able to break de glass? What are you going to do!, also cover the windows🤔🤔
It might look funny now but he will be back when the covers are off and clean you out mark my words . There's only one way to stop him . If you want to keep koi The bird has to go . Sorry now but that's the truth of it.
I keep a shotgun right at the doors of my dining room. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do. I don't bother anything that Leaves my animals alone.
I had a heron clear out my goldfish pond...twice! Amazing birds that look freakishly big in the garden. Great video Mark.
5:08 You'd think the bird head mounted on your wall would be a deterrent, but I guess not...
You can really see the dinosaur ancestry in birds like these.
That was Awesome footage of the Blue Heron! Your Koi are lucky fish! You have them so well protected. I really like your pond. Blessings! 🌿🐟 Monica
Thankfully you have strong lids! That could have been tragic.
Maybe you could buy some of that opaque film to put on the glass, let's light in but he can't see the fish through the glass , he had that look in his eye 'I'll be back ' ☺
Get a whistle and every time you see him blow it he will eventually get scared and not come back .love your vids love 💖 from London uk 🇬🇧

Fecking herons are a bloody Menace😡😡
Some stunning koi mind 💯👌👍👍👍
I isn't every day you look outside and discover a dinosaur trying to get inside!
Got to give him a little scare is all, train him not to come back. Lovely bird, but not the visitor you want as a pond owner :)

It's into heavy rock. Constant head banging makes you senseless eventually. Been there, done that. Much better than today's music genres.

We need more koi videos 📹 mark haha love them
I think the heron thinks the plasriccover is ice.
Wow that's funny and how it's trying to get your fish

How's the pond doing at the start of this season? I've got my tubs ready to go and some rice fish to breed once things get going!
Some stunning koi there bloody heron !

They have this water hose sensor that is motion activated. It goes off when is senses motion. It might help..

@ Bruce, sounds like you need a lot of money to live in Miami to replenish fish stocks and bullets ,☺🇬🇧
This sounds like homestead! Lost my 10 year old koi due to a tenant trying to be nice by topping off the pond with city water. 🤬
try getting a concrete herron & sit it up next to the pond he'll think the pond has already been claimed by another 1
Thankfully they don't seem too smart
Good times

Can you do a video on giant squid?
That is a small heron next to our great blue heron.
Give it some lead 😊
I've seen them eat baby ducks.
Get a dog tat will scare them away guarantee
🙈🙈🙈 how is that beak not cracking the plastic
May have to put one-way film on windows where you can see out but not in
use a remote control car or a sensor device. I'm sure you come up with somthin
I know it’s nature and it just wants a meal but he would not get a good response at my pond between the dogs cats and me he not come back lol
Put fishing line round your pond they step in not fly in
Drop it off at chester zoo? 😅
Wow...you have to give him an A for effort and persistence. Keep us posted, he's a stubborn hard headed big bird...he'll be back.
👍❤👍
Love these birds. See them often. Saw one catch and eat a vole. If I thought i could encourage them in i would have a small pond with golfish in 😂
so nice bird, give her some food :)
hmmm you have a few mins of black screen.
You’ll get over hopefully.
@@frankiepitt9135 hmm?

Your koi are spectacular well done 👏

You're on his radar forever. Get a nice pcp air rifle mate.

@@calebreutener870 Even for winged snakes? Well its his pond.
