    Just stumbled across this amazing footage again! The koi/goldfish caught does look sizable, the heron must have been hungry! Still, that (I admit, it had a pretty red and white pattern) fish looked pretty determined/flapping the tail hard the whole time. The heron also looked to have gulped her potential meal down fast!
    I wonder still, wouldn’t this particular fish stand a chance of turning around in the elastic gullet/stomach to potentially escape?! I would think the thing could even cause internal issues (hopefully not) to the heron?!

    Hi, I'm planning a video on my channel about pond predators, and wondered if I could use some of this video in it? I would obviously give credit, both during the video and in the description. Best regards, Andy

      Indeed , we thought none of our goldfish at the time were bigger than half that size.

    Amazing capture! Wow that looked like a beautiful huge goldfish captured here! So did she really manage to gulp the whole thing down entirely okay?? If eaten, does the poor fish get swallowed alive as well?!

      ultimatemexicano3535 I guess the fish eaten alive would die in suffocation before getting digested in her stomach.

      Just stumbled across this fascinating capture again! Wouldn’t it be great to grab the bird’s neck around 1:04 and save that fish from sliding all the way down??
      Does the unlucky prey stand any chance itself to escape the heron’s elastic throat/stomach if eaten in that condition as well!?

    I had a feeling it was a blue Heron that ate all the fish in both mine & my In-laws ponds last yr.. After seeing this video,I'm totally convinced these birds are the culprits. I live next to a creek & starting about 5yrs.ago,more & more Blue Herons(which I had never seen in Nashville,Tenn.in all the +20yrs.living here)started appearing near most bodies of water around town. I think they are beautiful birds & I love waterfowl,but I wish they would stick to catching fish,etc.,in the creeks & artificial lakes that I originally started spotting them in,instead of our little Koi ponds..I'm about to give up on restocking our ponds this yr...

      A friend of mine had a similar situation, netting or mesh over the pond should dissuade them.

      Hi - Yes, real shame camera missed that. However that sequence filmed with a remote action triggered trail-cam; and as the Heron stands so still for long times, the video will often not kick in until detects movement again, so unfortunately often a delay before records.

    The fish did seem huge and bigger than any I thought we had in the pond, but seemed to be no bother to the Heron to swallow it down in one ..alive. Nature raw, in tooth and .... beak !

      Oh interesting! I have never witnessed such an event before. I wonder, wouldn't the fish stand any slim chance of wriggling out to escape or even damage the herons stomach if eaten in that condition?? It's hard to think the big colorful fish met its end and succumbed as another lunch for the herons belly?

    @cju4300 Před 3 lety +1

    Maybe you can raise some other fish along with koi. Keep herons satisfied and environment healthier.

      Have decided not to bother with fish, as really prefer it to be a native wildlife pond.

    I'm having an issue with a heron eating fish out of my outdoor pond, it's problematic to say the least. Any hints on how to keep this shithead away from my fish. I just bought two literal gold (not orange) fish the other day and he already got Kanye.
