  • tldr;
    Parameters:
    29g planted stocked with 7 adult otos, 12 rasbora, 2 adf, 2 bamboo shrimp, assassin snails (betta was separated)
    78f heated treated tap water
    no ferts or co2, inert substrate over flourite
    ph ~6.3-6.5
    low alkalinity
    nitrite 0
    nitrate 20-40ppm - plants keep it pretty stable
    hardness of about 125mg/L (mostly from snail shells and crushed eggshell)
    40 percent water change with cooler water triggered
    ---------------
    This is the first time my otocinclus catfish have attempted to spawn. I am not an expert on otocinclus and unfortunately was unsuccessful past a week of raising the fry on this attempt.
    However - I would like to try to give as much information as possible and talk about my observations of the spawning and first week so maybe somebody else could replicate this and successfully breed more tank bred otos!
    I have 7 adult otos, 3 are O. macrospilus species, the other 4 are O. Vestitus.
    There is 3 females and 4 male, and as of the making of this video, all 3 females are gravid and males are ready and just waiting for the female to accept.
    Before the spawning occurred, there were no major changes to the aquarium in at least the previous 2 months.
    I believe a cool "rainfall" water change and drop in water level simulating a rainy season is the main factor in triggering the spawning behaviour, and I will try to replicate this in the future.
    I made some Oto MERCH!

    🥹 they love the home you made them so very much. Awe I would love for my otocinclus to spawn I would definitely remove my guppies and make it an oto mystery snail tank.

    Love this series! Hopefully you have better luck with future fry, but these vids have been so informative!

      Thank you! I've still got a couple more videos planned in the series, I'm just slow 🙃
      I've had 3 spawns and hatching since! Really hoping some will make it 🤞

    Check out Mark's Aquatics CZcams channel. He has three videos...parts 1, 2 and 3 showing the entire process of what you need to do. He is very knowledgeable. As he points out... the hardest part is keeping them alive. Great video BTW.

    In my experience, low atmospheric pressure definitely helps induce breeding in catfish. I dont have too much breeding experience, but ive always noticed more breeding action when there was a storm nearby

    • @freeshrimp
      @freeshrimp  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I don't have much experience either but lining up water changes with storms seemed to help for me. Unfortunately I had to move and they haven't attempted in the new water yet though

    What is the ideal temperature for breeding? Thanks

    • @freeshrimp
      @freeshrimp  Před 4 měsíci

      My tank is kept at 78°F with a preset heater. I don't know if it's best, but in my experience they started breeding while I was trying water changes with slightly cooler water - probably about 73°F.

    How to identify male and female otos??

    • @freeshrimp
      @freeshrimp  Před 7 měsíci +1

      They are very similar overall and can be a little hard to tell. Usually females will have a wider body than males, I found it easiest to tell when they are on the front glass, but honestly had a hard time identifying a couple of mine until they started showing some eggs in the belly.

    Maybe you you should move the frogs too. Oto eggs are very vulnerable.

    • @freeshrimp
      @freeshrimp  Před 4 měsíci +1

      If I was actually trying to breed I 100% would, but this is just my community tank and not an actual attempt to get baby otos. Surprisingly the frogs didn't seem to be much of an issue, however I know they'd definitely snack on a fry if given the chance.

    • @wcdeich4
      @wcdeich4 Před 4 měsíci

      @@freeshrimpmaybe they became more of a target when they were old enough to swim around more? There is also a chance of fry getting sucked into the filter. IDK, but I hope people breed them in captivity more soon.

    I would not place baby fish in an aquarium with other life form.
    Fiind a food that îs suitable for baby fish, like algae.
    Keep the recipient warm.

    • @MrGigi-dz9cv
      @MrGigi-dz9cv Před 7 měsíci

      Don't try to feed anything but algae.
      They are too small to eat vegetables.

      Thank you for all the information!
      This wasn't actually an attempt at breeding the fish, and was just something unexpected that happened in my community tank. I'm amazed they even tried to spawn with the other fish and frogs living there!

      @@freeshrimp Ok.
      Don't keep baby fish with other fish.
      They will get eaten.
