    Genshin Impact's world is rich with bosses with varying designs and mechanics, yet lately it feels like the bosses lack the satisfaction and depth you would experience from other RPGs. Today I wanted to go over some problems with bosses in Genshin Impact.

    I think you overlooked one of the worst aspect of bosses: all of them have incredibly long/annoying downtime that artifically lengthens the fight, which is only compounded in abyss. I get that they don't want you to be able to one shot every boss, but really how fun is it watching Wolf run laps around the arena, or have Signora turn into a popsicle while we wait around for butterflies to spawn. And without fail each new boss has a phase like this, and each time just makes me roll my eyes and forget having any fun fighting them.

    • @drunkcapybara7004

      For some aspect of the bosses, this just feels like instant-gratification creep. Some other stuff do feel as if they should be streamlined like multi-runs (like every other gacha game out here ffs!) for mere domains instead of spending only 1 condensed resin or 20 resin at a time. Or perhaps condensed resin can also function as a "skip ticket". Think of something like auto-cooking unlocks: with enough normal runs as qualifiers players can skip the fight and just pay the resin.
      Abyss is an issue because of micromanagement for HP and energy due to rollover to next chamber, and then DPS race that's been a thing since fking V1.0 & resets having to face chamber 1 again. Other than that, I like the phases breaking up each boss fight so the game also doesn't just become 1EQ2EQ3EQ4EQSpamLeftClick near-mindless flowchart. But to fix this... Well... Is everyone okay with increasing even an optional anxiety level of this game? 😂

    I think a big problem with bosses in Genshin is just how many times you need to fight them in order to get enough of a specific material. Beating the same boss 50 times just to get enough mats for a single character is going to be tedious, no matter how good the fight is. If you need those mats for multiple characters, it gets exponentially worse.

    • @SeanCrosser
      @SeanCrosser Před rokem +176

      And being at max WL doesn't even guarantee that you get more drops. Getting 20 for the final ascension can take anywhere between 7-10 runs. Stupid.

    • @jeremiahsmith916
      @jeremiahsmith916 Před rokem +180

      I think this problem is joined at the hip with their ridiculous resin cost. There’s no reason for a world boss to cost a whopping 40 resin. It allows for max 4 fights per day (more realistically 3 if you have any irl commitments and can’t micromanage resin seamlessly). So we can get only 6-10 drops per day, which makes ascending one character take a literal WEEK of spending all resin exclusively on that boss and nothing else. That’s just tedious with no upsides whatsoever. The only thing worse is when you’re Mora-locked and have to farm leylines, which are again mindnumbingly easy and tedious.

      @darkdruidsvale Před rokem +30

      @@jeremiahsmith916 probably wouldnt call it a bad habit in this videos case, he does have a pretty good point here, the only reason to fight bosses is for 1 specific purpose for each boss, weeklys for talent mats, world bosses for character mats, if we had 2 or 3 other things to look forward to when grinding them out it would probably be a better experience overall, and difficulty is a definite inconsistency with genshins design

  • @omgpterodactyl3289
    @omgpterodactyl3289 Před rokem +1004

    I think another problem is that hoyo equates difficulty with tedium. The wenut in the new spiral abyss isn't a hard boss at all. It barely attacks you, its just spends most of the fight untargetable and wastes your time.

      @shadowboi8620 Před rokem +183

      The thing is, this type of boss is sort of necessary to counteract "national" style teams... the ones that drop a bunch of buffs and then unleash a ton of damage. And there do need to be things that encourage/reward other styles of play. Yeah, it'd be better if Hoyoverse just flat out nerfed Benny, Xingqiu, and the like. But they won't, despite how they warp the META. So instead, we get things like this, or the water slowing effect, to say, "Hey, try something else."
      My main problem with Wenut wasn't/isn't his mechanics. After all, it isn't like the various other times when they threw mega-HP check bosses at us were exactly free of frustration either. No, what sucks the most about Wenut was that, to try different teams against him, meant playing through chamber 1, 2, and half of 3 each time. That was where the majority of my time was wasted, not on him being underground.
      With the current reset, using the same enemies, it wasn't a problem. I knew what I needed, brought the same teams as last time, and 36 starred, no problem, first try.

    Hoyoverse sees difficulty as "just add more HP or resistances" instead of having players actually think. They also have a huge problem with rewarding players for anything. A boss can drop materials for a new craftable weapon, or new "color swapped" skins, or even unique crafting materials for teapot furniture! I think the boss designs themselves are amazing, but the rewards need something to spice them up and give us a reason to actually fight them.

      At that point they should just let you roll multiple copies of X amount of resin and can crush the condensed and fragile resin inside the instance to turn it back into resin...another dang problem i had with honkai impact`s universal mirage cause they never had a auto clear if you already EZ clear the instance to invalidate the reason to go thru the fight again or simply doing one fight for say, 2 or even 6 instances of loot to save a good 5~10 minutes of repeated runs.
      Point n case might as well just go to titles that are more generous and actually address tedium things like Punishing Gray Raven does and i certainly will enjoy doing a comparison gag of on-release Wuthering Waves VS current version Genshin impact, once the former is out on the global side of things.
      Thars a reason why my joke with Miho-verse type games is they are more visual novel instead of actual game, because if they were actually more about the game, they would tighten up problematic and tedious elements and maybe think to include future proof systems like ways to speed up the grind for newer players to get into the game (instead of skipping entire regions and resources by abusing low world level gags) and put actual systems that REWARD players for long term play...
      Which is seriously funny that the only real bits to `reward` players for long-term is things like name plate cards and a thin texture of glider winds that is locked more behind months upon month of grinding, instead of defeating particular bosses...
      Even unlockable emotes and fragments to make relics and mythic gear back when i played Wakfu feels more rewarding then what Miho-verse based games are too stingie to even pull, but i guess they are too lazy to want to have every character be able todo a particular dance emote, even if it would be awesome to have a bunch of characters do Caramel Dansen after being one particular world boss.

      People like to point to specific early characters for being broken, but yeah I think this is a much bigger issue.
      The power gap between people who pay + people who play like monks for a year to fully dump resources and hyper invest in a single unit and the people who don't is incredibly large. Even putting a moderate amount of investment in a small core team vs spreading the resources out can make it dramatically more powerful.
      To be clear, by spreading out I don't mean investing in everyone you have or under investing in your top performing teams. I'm talking about people who hyper invest in 1 niche to the point where they can even brute force through those teams' weaknesses vs investing in a larger variety of characters to fill different roles & cover for lackluster areas.
      The power gaps make it impossible to fairly balance the game in a way that makes it challenging, yet fun and engaging across the spectrum. Forget the specific early 4* suspects people usually point to, they're just a symptom of the problem, not a root cause.
      As long as MHY continue to use these conflicting design philosophies of making top heavy p2w gacha gearing & trying to design content that is balanced across a wide spectrum of players these problems will continue to persist.

    That last point for coop is very compelling. As it stands, off-field damage dealers and supports have inherently more value because you can have multiple of them on a team as opposed to the one on field damage dealer purely based on Genshin’s own design. Having tougher bosses with better drops makes it more enticing to have multiple built on field damage dealers and ultimately makes it easier for Hoyoverse to advertise banners with more of their kind. A win-win so to speak.

    Also as bosses are meant to be progression and genshin tries to limit how much you can grow per day (even if you spend) I imagine they don't want to give even more for something you are already going to do it's why artifacts are random so you don't get what you want and need to spend more time there not focusing on other things

The Maguu Kenki first appeared there and he was such a huge step up from the few Mondstatd and Liyue bosses I had fought (I never even struggled with Oceanid like others I know did), as a very new player, my characters were not built so the Kenki was difficult. I think an excellent balance of hardcore v casual would be to incentivize you to use less powerful characters. One of my least favorite aspects is the fact that there's nothing to do with your new characters until you've leveled them up, and the best way to level those characters is NOT to use them. I was so excited to use my new Hu Tao...until I learned I'd need to fight the same boss dozens of times with other characters before she could contribute.
    Have a way to numerically represent a character's "power level" including their gear. Then increase rewards based on using the lowest level loadouts that you can get away with. That way, you don't have to add difficulty just by making the top even harder. Instead you increase it by focusing on really mastering what content is there.
    Of course, there's nothing to stop me from just using low level characters, but I admit that it's less fun without an external reason to do so. They already let us fight lower level bosses. Give us a reason to go at them with lower level characters. Hell, it could even be a reduced resin cost for picking up the rewards.

    @ethikore1131 Před rokem +9

    I largely agree with your points, though I feel like just "making all bosses harder" isn't the right approach, so let me pitch an idea.
    From my experience as a player, Genshin has been a slow grind to the infinite milestone of "make your characters stronger". Every day I push a little bit closer to that goal, whether it be a few more levels on my talents/weapons, a new good artifact, or another Ascension on my characters, and it's honestly really fun seeing my account progress.
    In this vacuum, the easy bosses aren't much of an issue. I defeat them to get what I need, feel sufficiently rewarded for the time I spend on them, and bam, I'm done.
    That's why when I saw this video, I was a bit confused because I don't have beef with Genshin's bosses.
    But watching it, I realized how boring and pointless the same bosses must be for a player who already maximized their characters, and you may be seeing where I'm going with this. Once again, Genshin Endgame comes in to ruin everyone's fun(whether casual or competitive) by making easy but tedious monotony for starved players to grind through.
    While we can only hope and pray that the Endgame situation improves, when it comes to bosses specifically, I have one Endgame idea suggestion.
    The classic Boss Rush. It sounds pretty lame, but it still holds merit. Challenge a few bosses in sequential order, BUT(and this is a big but) instead of being a boring, lifeless arena, each of them actually takes advantage of terrain and uniquely challenging mechanics that heavily emphasize the use of specific kinds of characters(basically, all of Vars' issues with Genshin's combat, addressed). Every world boss here is a souped-up version of its overworld self, and each Rush is concluded by a Weekly Boss that does the same. Afterward, the time you take to win(like a high score) is measured and rewarded with an increasing returns system(if you have a high time, you'll need to improve it by fewer seconds to get the next reward than a player with a low time). While there are a lot of gaps I haven't filled in this system, I overall think it'd be a pretty rewarding experience for players in the endgame, while not trampling on new or growing players with unreasonably difficult bosses for the gear they have.

Everything can either be brute forced in seconds, requires a shielder and/or healer because they just fill massive areas with staggering attacks or damage like Azhdaha or the gauge in Signora or the most common, and worst one, invulnerability forcing you to just wait forever because you can't hurt the boss.
    The Wenut is the worst designed boss I can remember in a game, I thought Scara was bad but the Wenut basically doesn't even attack, it isn't even threatening a little bit, it's just a giant health bar that constantly goes invulnerable. No interesting mechanics or ways for certain elements to force it out of the ground or interact with it, just wait, attack it for 2-3 seconds, wait again, rinse and repeat.

    Also i don't mind them being easy to kill but yeah MHY should add an optional WL9 that's twice as hard as WL8 just for those looking for a challenge and i think no1 will complain about it tbh specially since it would be optional.
    That being said is not the difficulty i hate about most bosses but instead the stupidity behind them,i don't mind bosses being hard to kill because they're hard to kill but i do mind when bosses are hard to kill because they stall for time by being under the ground or having invincibility for like 80-90% of the fight like the Serpent or the Wenut,those to me are not bosses with "alot of tought put into them" they're just bosses made with the poorest game design in mind. Bosses should feel good to fight and constant they should never feel like you hit them once then you can take a tea break for 10 mins then you have another chance at hitting them. That and also another gripe i have with the bosses are the godawful unskippable weekly bosses cutscenes,no1 gives a s**t about them after the first time they fight said bosses during the stories so why force players to watch the same crap over and over and over again each time without the option to skip it or disable it idk cuz to me that's just stupid game design again not to mention you can easly die during those cutscenes like Azdaha's passive damage killing you during the cutscenes when you can't move or shield or heal OR Dvalin's platforms doing too much dmg while you again can't fly or do anything or hell even when Dvalin's cutscenes trigger when you glide in between the platforms which means you are stopped during the cutscenes which means you glide to your doom. Those are all situations that ppl can find themselves in and it's stupid that a game has this kind of thing,those cutscenes should be skippable and that's that,then again is that rlly the first QoL addition we asked for?
    That being said Genshin could benefit alot from raid bosses doable only in co-op only with characters max lvl or with some restrictions(so lvl1 characters from a guy that's AR25 won't be able to do them) as an endgame content,raid bosses who'd drop 5* weapons and other rlly rare things and rewards,hard bosses but rewarding ones. That'll never happen tho.

      2) The respawn timer on bosses. If I have to kill the same boss 30 times, at least don't make me wait 5 minutes for it to come back.
      3) Bosses aren't interesting to fight...which touches on Vars' complaint, but he wants to liken them to bosses from other games, whereas I want to liken them to a domain run, where the mechanics just end up getting in the way. Thus, I argue bosses aren't fast to kill because lol look at me and all my one-shot tech, but rather because they are SLOW to kill when you aren't using C2 Raiden hypercarry to roll them. And you have to kill them too many times -- I don't want to refight a boss more than maybe 3 times total.
      4) Bosses are region-locked and story-locked, which isn't a problem on its own until you consider that they're required for character ascension materials...including for new players.
      5) Weekly bosses are gated to once per week, which is a little too MMO-esque for me.
      6) Some bosses force specific elements. In an element-driven game, I'm fine with the idea of not being able to use a specific element, but you should be able to operate with 5 of the other 6, rather than in many cases being locked into one. Just try to kill the pyro cube without hydro. I dare you. (And without pulling them to the ocean water.)

    I wish they would add an elysian realm/simulated universe type challenge in genshin, progressing through increasingly hard stages whilst obtaining powerful buffs for your characters, I think they tried to do this with abyss, (but utterly failed). This gamemode could also come with it's own story/events to unlock new and temporary stages, and serve as a great challenge for when you're bored.

    Definitely agree, there’s so much wasted potential with simply improving bosses, as a casual (who also loves playing coop) I personally would love to see many of these things you mentioned included.

    Something that this is missing is what do you do about the resin system if you add say a 1-100 chance of a random 5 star weapon? Like ok, we have reason to fight them, but weekly’s are 60 a pop (30 for first 3) and bosses aren’t cheap either when you consider we have artifacts-gold-xp to also farm. The “don’t fight after talent mats done” life is sorta kinda good because we simply don’t have near enough resin to go around, and adding something that essentially forces you to shift focus in an attempt to cop a 5 star wouldn’t work in the current state of the game, IMO.

    I feel a lot of this boss problem goes back to artifacts. I feel they place too much value and therefore force us to put too much time into getting these artifacts, when there are more satisfying and diverse rewards to attain in this game.
    The system is a relic meant to work for those enjoying the game or a region for the first time, after that there's little incentive to engage. I will admit. Some banging Wanderer's artifacts have saved a few of my builds though. But that again goes back to the game revolving around artifacts almost completely for end game progression.

    I'm kinda mixed on this, given that certain bosses still make me struggle (Bishap pain) while other bosses are easy to the point of not interacting with their mechanics.
    That being said, I think one of th ebig issues with Genshin, and why they won't ever really fix the difficulty issue in the overworld is the rather insane gap that time creates between players. I haven't hit 6-digit damage in my 8 months of playing, despite not being f2p (only small whale, I don't do constellations). While I'm missing some of the meta characters (Hu Tao, Albedo, Kokomi), I do have many meta definers, but still struggle in game, especially in the abyss.

    There are two rules I always follow whenever I fight bosses
    1) Never have Zhongli in the team (unless it’s too hard)
    2) Whever I fight new bosses, instead of just walk up and try to kill, I’ll just spend a few minutes just dodging attacks and let it try to kill me instead. Some of the bosses have very cool visual designs, and fascinating mechanic and attack patterns. So it’s a waste to just treat them like punching bags.

    Nice video! They could implement a Guild system that you need to kill some enemies waves or/and bosses with specific buffs. Players can do that solo or coop. The drop could be mora, exp, artifact boxes (similar to abyss one) and the final item, an item that let you "replace" one substatus from an artifact but it is random (and it reset the artifact level). The new difficult would only affect players that want to improve their strength, so the casual players may not need to do this kind of mechanic, and this new method will let players "build" different comps (according to enemies bonuses) and coop builds, to play together and create new comps.

    Maybe they should make a boss where you have to survive until the timer ends and it does a shit ton of damage with multiple detailed attack patterns or a boss where instead of trying to deal as much damage, you have to create a certain number/type of elemental reactions to take it down

      Reminds me about Kalphas from elysia realm. Before they took its third phase out and then started shoving only the first 2 phases for elysia realm`s weekly spam content and then throw him in abyss randomly at times also.
      Seriously, i actually had `fun` during Kalphas story mode fight where his 3rd phase was literally he was fking immune to damage and you had to run from him as he burns himself of his remaining hp.
      Never the less, if they do have that kind of stuff, they would have to rework the EFF outta whatever spammable content they were to use to huck it in abyss and memorial arena...
      Which punishing gray raven does a good job by ranking you based on how much remaining HP the boss has, how long it took you to finish the fight AND how much hp your own character(s) had left to tally the score, with warzone simply being your own remaining hp and how much damage (or waves) you dealt for the endless mode. Then simply scoring based on how fast you clear.

    The topic of game difficulty always puts me in a weird spot, I do understand why the game is labeled as easy, and yet, someone like me, who decides to play with non meta characters always struggles with abyss, I couldn´t 36* this past reset, just increasing difficulty would only make things worse for xinyan, Thoma Dehya mains, and wouldn't make much change to OP waifu mains like hu tao, Raiden, Yelan etc.

    I had an idea for a type of gameplay that was more engaging atleast for me, it would be an arena kind of place like serenity pot and it's main purpose is to give a boss sandbox and also a PvP experience. It would go like this for single player
    1. It would be weekly thing where u have to beat a boss at an extreme difficulty and crazy hard mechanics to get some primogems like 20 or 40 and this would be the way of making this arena like serenity pot or tcg
    2. Players can also choose a boss to fight whenever they want at any type of difficulty or choose a dummy like masanori with set amount of HP and def etc. This would be the main point of sandbox that can be used by players for testing or showcasing DMG etc
    For multiplayer( the fun part)
    1. You can invite other players and only in this arena you can
    --Look at each other's artifacts and choose any of the artifact to use on your character
    --Get the constellations of any character but both of the players should have that character and will be limited to the highest constellation, for ex if both have kazuha and one of them has a C2 but other one only at C0 then both can have atmost C2
    --Have highest weapon refinement. This is similar to constellation one both should have the weapon and the one with higher refinement will the most u can get
    This is like a testing place and also a PvP arena for people who want to test there skills at same level.

    Adding more mechanical elements to bosses would be fun. Taking parts of the overworld like puzzles and adding them to the phases of the boss. There are other ideas already there like the Aeonblight Drake becoming resistent to an element once it builds up enough on it. Tweaking that so it comes resistent to more elements at a higher pertentage (50 or 75%) would be a challenge. It would force you to vary your team composistion to better fight the boss since mono or dual element teams would struggle. Not all bosses should have that mechanic since other teams like mono cry would unfairly be targeted but it's an option for some.
