I was interested to see that you were made is get the immigration stamp right away. In 1995 I rode into Kenya from from the south-western edge of Ethiopia. There was no border crossing, just white painted stones to mark it out. I did my immigration formalities in Nairobi over a week later.
Fair play to you man takes some balls to be doing those miles solo. Go on !
