So, IF Millenials are entitled, isn't is because the previous generations did not have healthy boundaries? When previous generations asked their parents for money (as kids will do), the parents said 'no'. And they understood that it was their job as a parent to say no, and not the other way around (aka, kids should just be born with high character, I shouldn't need to be taught it).
This is truly the best question. Studies are showing that narcissism stems from lack of authoritative parenting. Basically, millennial parents are whining about how they have to tell their own children 'no'.
People in general have been saying, "Goddamn kids these days..." for the entire history of the human race. I'm sure there were cavemen saying things like, "Damn kids these days with their fire....we didn't have fire when I was a kid, and we got along just fine."

This is exactly why millennials are so spoiled. Their parents didn’t want them to get shat on, so they wound up raising overly sensitive snowflakes, who don’t know how to push a broom. You can’t protect your children from the world. You need to prepare them for it, then push them out into it. We have failed miserably at that.
I hope millenials are better at not denegrating young people as they age. I was born at the tail end of the boomer generation, and now I hear people my own age making horrific comments about millenials. For whatever reason, these same people have forgotten what it was like to be young, and they gloss over some of their own mistakes. As people age, they seem to reflect positively on their own past and make it seem as if young people are destroying the present. Memories get distorted, and somehow improved, over time. Maybe it's just a natural part of aging. I don't like it, and I try not to do it. I hope millenials are more conscious of the criticism they received.

Millennials may become discouraged in the face of all this criticism (or enthralled, again the whole paint an entire generation idea is dumb) and the people controlling the education and business that the millennials are subjected to are the ones criticizing them.

I feel a sense of such belonging and friendship with all my fellow millennials. I feel like we share with each other a lot. We share our couches with strangers, our homes through AirBnb, our cars through car sharing, and the list goes on. We are a wonderful, thoughtful and caring generation. I'm really proud of us!
I'm 66 years old now, but in my last few years of work, I ran into a different sort of people. They were offended by everything. It really surprised me at first, and I thought it was just that person or a couple of kids that were new to the world. Later I discovered many of them were. When my mom was at a nursing home they had a Thanksgiving party. My sister went with me to visit mom and I was taking pictures. I saw a little high school gal that worked there and asked her if she wanted her picture taken. She said no so I didn't take one. Later that night I got a call from the manager that the girl had reported me because my asking her made her uncomfortable. Years ago that would not have even been reported. In another example, I said something to a woman about her body and while she did not complain, a young gal thought that was terrible. She reported me and then I got a call later from the temp agency that I was working for suggesting that I quit. I have run into many such examples and I wonder how these kids will make it through life.

***** Just got a second job. I start monday. And I've been managing the online backend for a store that hasn't opened yet. Plus, I do freelancing design and music composition on the side. All in all, I will probably be working most of my waking hours starting Monday.

Things are extremely different for different people. Getting a job for 18-year-olds today is NOT as easy as you older folks try to make it out to be. Didn't get any sort of hourly pay until I was 3 years out of high school, and that was weekend sign waving. That job disappeared, and it took two more years to find another hourly job. I'm working a nearly full-time gig, I teach occasionally, and I do freelance music and design. So, why aren't I rich if I'm just working sooo hard?

'judging' is one of the basic human psychological traits. we all do it every second, many times a second. consciously or in the subconscious. Old people do it, young people do it. animals do it. Without 'judging' we would have ceased from existence.
I think that millennials have been put in a more modern situation than older people, so maybe that's why older people judge them more harshly. They didn't have social media when they were 21 years old. Millennial have only adapted to their environment around them. Older people would have done the same if they had the same technology then as we do today.

I am a baby boomer and She is right .. given the population of the world there is not enough to go around or to share by the previous generations. I have one millennial still living at home not because he wants to and I watch him work hard as a tradesman for shitty wages because if he doesn't there is a long line of others to take his place. Ya and it’s silly how now gen z is blaming gen y (in so many posts) when gen z and gen y are a max of 15 years apart, generations are getting closer together. People in gen y like me didn’t know that we couldn’t expect a job out if college, the world changed for us out of nowhere and it’s silly that people have to judge each generation when we can all work together. Every generation has something to offer that is good and the generations are based off of major life events (like 9/11 for gen y and recension). Gen y & gen z are now followed by gen alpa.

There is a grey area in regards when the Millennial Generation begins. I've heard many different things, ranging from late 70's/early 80's (which is absurd) up to as late as 1986. Due to such disagreements, people in this "grey area" should feel free to pick an chose which group they identify with. I would say 1986-2004 makes more sense. 1982-2004 is a HUGE age range and covers a lot of people, as the speaker states. And many born in 1982 "have CHILDREN born in 2004", and they share different values and experiences.

Very well said! I once hung out with a group of kids in their early 20's (I'm in my early 40's). They all sat in a circle, talking with each other at length. Not one of them had their phone out. They just talked. I ended up taking a pic of them on my iphone and posting it to Intsagram, just to document a group of millenials having an actual conversation. The irony of a 40 something guy doing that was sweet.

My PenGal in the uk the average house prices have risen by 727% from £29,000 to £211,000 since the 1980s, the average wage back then was £6000 (worth around £19,000 today) the average wage now is £27,600 (worth around £8,700 back then) which is a rise of 145%. It would take over 7 and a half years (if you were to spend none of your wage) to afford a house on the average salary today compared to just over 4 and a half years in the 80s, then you’ve got the added values of significantly higher fuel prices (around £1.20 per litre today compared to the £0.28 per litre in the 80s for petrol) and then all of the new tax revenues they’ve brought in, to cut a long story short it will take around 15 year to save up for a house today in the uk (if house prices stay the same), and all of the older generation say we’re “entitled” even though I’ll be retiring at around 90 years of age at this rate and my anxiety levels are higher than that of a mental patient with anxiety issues in the 60s. Got to love being young
Callum, maybe you should read about how life was in the UK from the 1940s to the 1980s. It was no picnic. Expectation levels are higher now. Most people didn't go out to eat and didn't go on foreign holidays. Yes some might have owned houses but they were poor quality. Bill Wyman's autobiography states that he first bought a house with an inside toilet in the late 60s and early 70s. And as a member of the Rolling Stones it's safe to say he had access to a bit more cash than most.

The competition for jobs nowadays is relentless and so against younger people that we’re working so much harder to get jobs to pay for a mortgage that we will be paying off for most of our lives. The point of my original comment was to show that he younger generation is in now way “privileged” in the way the older generations like to say.

Listen, I have a friend who is top of the pile at an investment bank. He's from a poor non white background in Yorkshire, went to a polytechnic and guess what-he's clever, works well with people and works hard. That's what it takes. You make your own luck. It doesn't come immediately, it takes time and you have to work for it. You are privileged because you are currently living in the first world in the most technologically advanced period in human history and life has never been easier. Poverty or lack of opportunity in the 60s and 70s compared to what is described as poverty or lack of opportunity now are worlds apart. The fact that your gripes are about job competition and not being able to afford a house (oh the horror!!) only serves to show the unnatural sense of entitlement that is in existence.
I do apologise for sounding harsh, I'm sure we would actually agree on many things in a more human setting. The point I am trying to make is that there appears to be a singular lack of awareness regarding how sh*t life was in the past relative to now. And the fact that it takes time to accumulate wealth. The hyper speed of IT/the internet makes it appear that you can get rich in a year or so and this is not the case for most.
All it would take is some acknowledgment of the fact that this is the case, and that problems now are not comparable to the grinding poverty experienced by generations that your generation now appear to despise. I'm not saying it is easy for your age group, but the lack of perspective can be quite baffling. Either way, the best of luck to you, I wish you well in your future wherever it takes you.

Nothing is their fault, and when they begin exhibiting criminal behavior the authorities want us to take care of it, but we aren't allowed to discipline! Yes you can spank your child occasionally if they do something bad like if they hurt another child, but you don't spank them because they forgot to clean their room, you remind them of their chores, and make them clean their room, no physical actions required.

I'm a coal miners daughter! Only way our generation went to college was if you were rich or got a scholarship. Generation X had to go to work. Someone had to support all the baby boomers. I always had 2 jobs of some sort. Kids now a days have their heads stuck in some kind of electronic device. They don't play outside anymore. It won't be long and they will forget how to even play hide and seek.

They all hated her. They had no personal relationship from their mother and recieved very little attention on nurturing. The older ones took care of the little ones when they could. She also became meaner and more bitter with every child, and was probably stressed to shit running a house of 9 kids and catering to a husband. Theres a reason people generally dont have more than 4 and actually focus on taking care of them and nurturing them and trying to create healthier and happier children.

There's more narcissism now cause students are more suicidal or at least downright depressed. They can't think for others since they can't even help themselves. The phrases "I'm gonna die" and "i cant do this anymore" are considered normal, and I wonder what might've made them like this??

Our generation x was wild and decadent and I look at the younger generation - they are much more geeky and innocent in comparison to any other ... I am surrounded by them and I find them delightful with their games, you tube, memes etc.
Friends of mine who grew up in the 80s were discussing how many abortions they had already had. So many don' t even want to date ... for whatever reason ... I honestly believe that many of the boys especially are just waiting for the right to come along.

Millenials have good intentions like every other young generation in history, and our story is unfolding with unique challenges and circumstances like every other. Alexander Olson. I am a millenial immigrant from a third world country where survival is dependent on how productive you are to the society. You are not entitled to anything, but you certainly have the right to live and right to make your own living. I find American millenials to be pathetic honestly. If the resources were limited, they would be swallowed up by nature as a result of Darwinism. Heck, the very reason a huge number of people from my country come to the US as immigrants, particularly in the field of Science is because the millenials are disinterested in things that are challenging. In my country there also is a strong sense of family which sorely lacks among my fellow millenials who think hating their parents is a cool thing to do.
That being said, America is or at least was one of the greatest countries there ever was. The American Constitution is one of the best written documents, by some of the smartest and good natured people to ever be in positions of power.

I am the father of three millennials and all three of them are awesome. All are responsible parents, one missionary, one police officer and one school teacher. Two of them are former military combat veterans. God bless the millennials who think outside the box and forge new paths.

If you ask me its human nature. If there is an easier road, we take it. Who goes to the library when you can google stuff? Who asks for directions when you can use gps? The problem is humans usually thrive and feel alive when challenged. We evolve. But we are rarely being challenged. Rarely being surprised by life and our experiences being spoiled . We tend to form opinions based on research vs 1st hand experience. Technology is helping our brains evolve without a doubt. But we are becoming thinking creatures rather than feeling/experience based creatures. Just my 2 cents.

I think I know a fitting quote that represents the attitude towards the current generation. "Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it." - George Orwell. I find it frustrating that me and all my friend are belittled in every online community. We are always the dumb kids who are spoiled and stupid. Yes, I am at fault for using more advanced technology or liking a form of entertainment the former doesn't. Before us they were fighting the system for rock music and different clothing, but spit our feet for cellular phones and the internet. Their generation had high levels of institutional racism, acceptable discrimination, zero LGBT rights. Even beating children was not really that bad back then. It was just considered "old fashioned discipline." I wish people were more accepting and understanding of everyone around them. There is really no point to this comment, it isn't going to change anything. Sometimes it just makes you feel a bit better to vent your thoughts.
Yep I read a comment a while back where an older person was dissing out the new gen and the younger person had to point out at least we didn't disobey the law etc. The older person had to admit defeat with that one.

You bring up a very valid point of how huge generalized conclusions are being drawn using single point in time data point. Longitudinal prospective studies are much more useful than single point in time studies for supporting wide sweeping conclusions.
Growing up I used to think older people has things figured out and knows what to do. Now I understood, they have no clue! they have deluded themselves and others into believing that they know what to do and what is right or wrong. Moral: Think yourself, trust only your judgement, because whether you fail or not, it's on you alone.

Remember the drug epidemic? Well some of us Millennials were raised by those users and abusers. Many Millennials in the U.S have dealt with heavy issues of poverty, disease, terrorism, racism, religion, sexuality, and self-identity. So forgive us for trying to push back the evils that society has casted on us. Some, not all, of our generation has formed a counter- culture against what society currently values ( polorization and materialism). Too many us have witnessed our grandparents break their backs working intensive labour jobs just to lose everything in the financial crisis of 2008... excuse us for knowing that our lives are worth more than what corporate America is trying to exploit the world for.
This is something bigger than a generalization of 83 million people. The media bashing us just proves that our way of thinking is killing greedy corporations, eliminating racial and ethnic divides, exposing the evils of our government, etc. They know that we are breaking down the barriers that they worked so hard to keep up. The media always tries so hard to belittle us and bring us down because they know that we can bring the change that generations before us fought so hard to get. we know are worth because we've seen what happens to people who don't know theirs

So true. We are not entitled we are idealistic and dissapointed with reality. In Poland most people have higher education and our schools are one of the best in Europe but still there's 40% unemployment. If you make sacrifices from an early age and you don't get antything in return, you become burnout and depressed. Only way to survive it and not go crazy you have to re-evaluate your life goals. What's more, let's talk who actually runs econony.. Big corporations which makes all of us just slaves to handful of powerful people who control governments and politics. Millenials are recolutionaries that's why whose corporations owning newspapers want to discredit them, before whole countries rebell.
Here here! I am not a millennial, but many of those I have met give me reason to hope for the future. The stars in this cohort are some of the most worldly, imaginative, and civic minded people you will ever meet. And in fairness, they should be skeptical as the world their parents and grandparents have left for them is bankrupt and broken.
If there is any hope for humanity, it will be the millennial who will make the world a better place.
I’m 19 but when I watched a video of people my age and younger learning how to use a can opener for the first time I was surprised and sad at the same time.... I think the main problem is why didn’t parents teach us. There’s more blame on the millennial but what about the parents who raised them? Also like she said people grow up and change. Apart of the problem of why millennials end up staying at home is because there’s not enough jobs or you have to have like a thousand years of education. My older sister who’s 24 couldn’t find a job for awhile because the places she went to either said she wasn’t qualified or she was over qualified.... where’s the middle point? But the worse problem now is that you have to be a minority just to get a job because many companies are trying to make a quota. I’m a woman and I don’t want a company to just hire me because I am one; I want them to hire me because I’m right for the job and I’m qualified to do it.

Discrimination has been around before I was born. I know I am Puerto Rican and did not get the promotion for that reason. Some minorities were hire for the reason you mention. If not for laws minority would not be hire or promoted
@@nelmat8326 when we go to school, teachers dont just expect us to learn things. They explain it. A parent should explain/demonstrate how to do things to their kids. I love my parents and overall, they were amazing at being parents but one thing that will always make me sad is the fact that I had to teach myself how to shave. I dont completely blame my dad since he works and comes home tired but I waited weeks, asking him multiple times to teach me and he never did. I didn't have that moment with him. Sure he taught me other things, but a lot of parents miss out on those teachable moments then get upset that their children dont know.

Remember back in the day we used to have plots on sitcoms with a broken father and his lovely wife inviting the boss over for dinner and begging for more money? Well, we weren't raised to say "Please Sir, can I have some more?". We know how much our work is worth and go in asking for that amount. Paying more simply because of seniority is a stupid outdated concept. People should be paid based on the value of their contribution. If you're at a company 20 yrs and they haven't moved you up the ladder then there's no reason you should make more than I do. I can guarantee that in 20 yrs I won't be stuck where you are.

Well on a serious note I'm 37 and still struggled with getting employment and been unemployed for years and I'm from gen x, must be just as bad for gen y, seems like we have been in recession for the last 50years due shitty governments. Working class has been abandoned while people at top get it all!
Mz. Brown, thank-you. I started learning I had to grow and move forwards just like everyone else when I heard the stories of growing up from the elders in my life; my Dad, my Mom and my family. I learned the common struggle of growing up and how to accept the journey of life from them.
I hope I can learn this as much from those who came before me as much as those with me and after me.

Boomer here (b. 1952). I enjoyed this clip a lot. On the other hand, I feel like I must be entirely out of the mainstream. I don't believe that millennials are narcissistic or entitled as a group or really any different than any other generation I have seen, except that their experiences have been different. I wanted their experiences to be different, and I didn't think about whether that would be good or bad, because I believed in them the same as I believed in us.
We were called self-centered and reminded repeatedly that if we thought the world owed us a living we had another thing coming. Sounds pretty closely related to narcissism and entitlement, no?
On the other hand, my beliefs and attitudes haven't changed that much, but my methodologies have. The obvious routes didn't seem to be available, so I looked for other ways to get there. I don't want experience to change the ideals and beliefs of millennials in that way. That is something I call cynicism.

You're severely out of touch with interacting with them...the narcissism is sociopathic and the delusion beyond any gen before. They've lost touch with reality due to coddling and propaganda and social media has given them a distorted sense of humanity. Their concepts/beliefs vs Reality are so great due to lack of REAL experience.....they live in a great illusion. She's wrong: they are NOT the same as every other gen....even her "talk" is shallow.

I agree with a lot of what she has to say and I'm a gen x'er. The main thing I have noticed about gen y is that they give up very easily, if a task is boring or doesn't meet their expectation they will leave.
That's because we already learned that having expectations and dreams is toxic and pointless nowadays. We better leave something that doesn't meet our expectations, so we won't get even more disappointed and depressed then we already are.

7:55 you also have you take in inflation. so basically 20- 30 years ago $1 was worth $2.97 in current value. Prices go up, minimum wage stayes the same and people ask for more money.
Surprisingly I love this generation they are total sweethearts. My generation was so rude to older people and those kids treat me like an equal but in a nicer way. I take classes in community college in the art department ( metalsmithing) so I’ve been interacting for a few years and they are just a pleasure. I know the difference because I taught for 28 years so I’ve seen many generations and this is the best. They aren’t very tough and not much was expected of them but that’s the parents fault and I do worry that they won’t work hard enough and won’t have a retirement ( I lived on nothing and put away literally only $100 of that was all I had) but as human beings they are wonderful.
Hi thanks for everything you said. I will say that even those of us with decent jobs or multiple jobs have a hard time just surviving now. It doesn’t matter if we hardly eat sleep or socialize. Many of us have accepted that things as they are now will make us work till we die, or become too disabled to move.
I think it’s part of the reason we’re so openly fighting the status quo. It seems like there’s no possibility of success unless things change. So let’s make it.
Studies say on average an American worker works more hours a week than a medical peasant living as a surf. It should be enough to survive in a first world country right? If it’s not something has to be wrong.
I wish more people would understand.. and that the only reason a group would act similarly is because we’re a product of our environment. A lot of it was what we needed to be, and some of it was the pessimism and burnout surrounding our environment.
If something is wrong it doesn’t do good to complain about the people, but to plan on fixing the soil that feed the plant.
I'm a so called Gen-Xer and I don't buy into all that BS stereotype of Millennials. Why? Because that's what they said about my generation. How we are the lost generation and so forth. Not all, but older generations tend to forget some shits and talk about the good ol days. Older generations just need to be little more understanding and be patient. We were all at that point in our lives.
I'm an older Millennial. I remember when your generation was unfairly labeled as slackers. It taught me a valuable lesson: Anyone who thinks they are better than a group of people based upon what time period they were born are losers.

I think this she was being too gentle and nice in her speech. The system is dysfunctional and we're noticing. It's not a matter of "being young and struggling to grow up and adjusting expectations," it's more that people are starting to realize what is important and what is not. In other words, things are changing. And that is a glorious thing. Climbing the corporate ladder may be some people's goals, but it isn't for everyone. Working shorter hours should be the norm... studies do show 8 hours is not really productive (and why is it we work 8 hours a day anyway? Totally arbitrary and especially at this point in time). Getting paid more is "logical" when you think about the rising cost of living. Doing a non-paid internship? That is preposterous. Most of them are illegal. The one's that are legal are considered less 'valuable.'
People, not just millennials (there is no such category, it only serves to divide people more), shouldn't have to struggle so much just to survive. Change the system fundamentally or sink slowly, technology doesn't wait, the environment doesn't wait. It's our choice. Our = everyone. And whatever we choose will have a huge effect on the next generation, so we must choose wisely.
'89 here. Millennials just found a system and a market they coulnd't access to. Not just because we were told to study and study until we're 28 to "have a great life" (filled with expectations), we also found a system in a state of collapse and decay that turned its back on us. We've been educated for a system that stopped existing some time ago. If we could we would have matured sooner. It's just that the system won't allow us to develop as adults as soon as it did with older generations. That's pretty much it. We're no mystery.

We are the generation that votes more than any other younger generation in this country, the ones who want to fix the corrupt government or economy, and also fix the environment. We more than any other generation want equal rights for everyone even if we go a little overboard sometimes. Many of us love technology and wish to develop it further, even those of us that still are religious are more inclined to believe in science than our parents. Many of us are skeptical and self deprecating. The majority of the older generations did way worse then us so far and continue to do so.
Many of the primary problems we now have to deal with were cause by the last generations. Then they judge us on the gall to want to fix it. Yes some of us are lazy or don't meet you're expectations. If you still judge us ask yourself if you're parents thought the same about you as a youth?

Thank you!! I'm a member of Gen X and I hated all the critiques of my generation standing for nothing. So 20 years later I hate how everyone is throwing Milennials under the proverbial bus knowing full well that "they" won't touch my generation because we're middle/upper management: WE are "them." I find this type of trend piece damaging. I am getting older. Who's going to take care of Me when I need care? You and people younger than you are going to care for me and the boomers. WHY start that relationship by accusing you of destroying America for doing the same things I did when I was your age? I know a fair share of Milennials and I like the people I know. We share more than a few values like being a good partner, parent and community member. I'd rather help you with things you need to know and you can help me with tons of things I don't know. But please try not to become jaded because enthusiasm is a great quality. You're going to be great at what you decide to do. But please, don't drag the next generation through the mud. You guys are smarter than that.

I think people complaining about about people being born after a certain date is kinda stupid. It's like people don't remember what's it's like being a kid in school? There are those really smart kids, there are those really crazy kids, and there's that bully who keeps shoving you into a locker. I can't imagine grouping myself everyone in my school just because we so happened to have similar dates of manufacturing lol. As a now relatively old person, I wish someone told me that when I was young. It's pretty sad to remember people telling me I'm stupid and spoiled and that everyone around me is stupid and spoiled simply because we were born later and that our whole generation is doomed. It's like people don't remember being a kid now that they're older and full of knowledge. Where is the empathy?
I think it really, really important to separate The Media from regular folks. I am a regular person and I have a huge appreciation for your generation. Maybe because I have two sons who are M's. Can you blame me...I'm a mom...I adore them. But seriously, I think you'll are really great. I won't go into all of the "whys" but let me say that your generation has music that is truly outstanding. There are lyrics that actually have meaning. So anyways, The Media will hype you a certain way yet the common folk think that you are pretty great. I love your generation (I'm 60) and my friends do too. K

She speaks very well and seems quite educated ... what exactly did I get out of this . She doesn’t like being judged no one does . She said it more eloquently then just don’t lump us all together we are not all the same and I agree .
I’m 58 years old and I’ve seemed find more people my age and older who act more entitled than a lot of the younger people that I know.

Most of the sources I've seen draw the line between "generation x" and "millennials" as 1980. Therefore, having been born in 1980, I choose not to belong to either.
Calling someone born in the early 80s a millenial is quite an insult.

When I retired from my job I told HR that I no longer felt that I was able to preform my (physically intensive) work to a standard that I could be proud of (to illustrate my situation soon afterward I went to a knee surgeon who scheduled emergency back surgery instead ). She responded that my employers were pleased with my performance and had never made negetive remarks. I said that that was just sad that their expectations were so low and left. I have heard from managers and others that companies have adapted to the attitude toward work by hiring more people which actually opens more jobs.
Maybe I'm biased being in the military but the 'typical' aged millenials I work with are brilliant clever hard working individuals, civilians on the other hand...... Work incredibly hard with very little reward, I personally think we have a great bunch ready to bring the world forward, honestly what's wrong with knowing your worth?

I would advice my fellow millennials to calm down. There is no need to get worked up over a few articles in magazines like Time and newspapers like NY Post which are losing readers and close to becoming irrelevant. These kind of articles are done deliberately to generate sales and website hits. Don't fall for clickbait.
I wouldn't worry about it, except some policy makers do read these articles, or at least think along these lines. During the push to pass the American Health Care Act, Paul Ryan said that if people wanted health care they should forego buying an iPhone. He's not old enough to have grown up in the "good old days" (pretty sure he's Gen X) but i suspect he's relying on appealing to voters that did.
You have to be very out of touch with current prices to think health care and consumer electronics cost comparable amounts yet some people evidently do. I would think retirees of all people would be intimately familiar with the healthcare system; however this wouldn't be the first time Medicare beneficiaries raised a great hue and cry about others expecting government handouts so I suppose it's not too surprising.
This is the same line of reasoning that leads people to claim that millennials can't afford housing due to overindulgence in avocado toast. Poke fun at a small luxury while ignoring the fact that a necessity costs orders of magnitudes more. I've recently concluded an apartment search and felt myself fortunate to find a place that costs slightly under half my income in rent, since it's still cheaper than what my friends are paying. Can you blame us for drowning our sorrows in fatty bread?
@SuperUser, it isn't just a few articles. It the global narrative. Its an easy way to blame the worlds problems on those who experience the worst outcomes. It is essentially victim blaming.

Peter J. Donnelly you are so right people want to blame the Millennials for who they are but their parents are the ones that raised them . And most if the time you get your personality by the people who raised you. So I would love to here from the generation who raised the millennial age group .
The parents of the millennials are the baby boomers
They were too busy working to keep a roof over our heads and shoes on our feet to raise us. May not be true for others, but in my suburban neighborhood, most parents worked and older children watched the younger ones.

Donnelly millienials were originally called latchkey kids, our baby boomer parents worked all the time and I honestly believe that’s why you get some of the stereotypes associated with our generation. A mass of people who grew up almost molding themselves as time passes with little input on the parental side due to said parents not being there for them.
I am a Baby Boomer who raised a Millenial. I totally agree that many, if not most Baby Boomers have not done a good job parenting their kids.
I used to think Millennials were narcissistic, self-absorbed, spoiled, and way too absorbed with "celebrity" culture. I'm sure plenty of them are, but I think just as many defy that stereotype. I was a teen in the 90's (My god, what a decade!), and I'm thrilled I didn't have to experience my childhood or teenage years in the mire of technology available today. I think the Millennials are a lot more savvy and sophisticated and in many ways smarter than we (and previous generations) were. They have to be. Their world is so vastly different than ours was. I can't even imagine the pressure these kids face every single minute of every single day.
But I could absolutely do without the selfies. The endless status updates on social media sites. The inability of some of them to hold a decent conversation with a real-life human being. Studies are showing that social skills are going out the window. A lot of Millennials are way too obsessed with a "me, me, me!" attitude that older generations found very unattractive. What was once considered ill mannered is now commonly accepted. Frankly, that sucks. Technology is great. (I remember actually having to sift through books to write research papers.) I love the amount of information that we have at our fingertips today. But for crying out loud, technology should NEVER be more important than people.
+0LolaLola Sure do. The whole freedom of self-expression in teens really started in the 1950's with rock and roll. It took off in the 60's, resurged again in the 90's, and it continues today. It's a good thing, for sure. Earlier generations didn't have the leisure of non-conformity or self-expression. They all tended to place the emphasis upon the community rather than the individual. Both sides have their merits. And their drawbacks.
With technology literally in our pockets, we no longer NEED to depend on one another for help, so social isolation increases. I think it's in our DNA to require nurturing and human contact, so I don't think we'd ever let it get too out of hand; but as I said, I don't like that I'm seeing technology become more important than human beings.
Of course, people said the same thing when machines replaced humans in factories. My argument is nothing new, but it is genuine.

I also notice this is true for many employers. Essentially, businesses will bend over backwards to get a particular technology to function even if it costs relatively several times the labor costs, they'll do special things to ensure it functions that they wouldn't consider doing decades prior for their human employees such as ensuring certain settings were uniform or updated for easier workload, the idea was you're being paid to deal with the chaos and mess ups and old tired equipment... machines on the other hand if things aren't set up just so, they simply don't work at all... so they take great pains and more costs to ensure their machines work.
A robot is being treated better than the human. And the productivity compared to the cost is usually about the same, hence they never get rid of the human entirely, sometimes even having to hire more.
While I agree with most of what you're saying...but our generation never had LITERALLY dozens of girls fainting over a guy's performance in concert (I'm looking at you Baby Boomers). So yeah, we "obsess" over celebs, but no more than any generation before us.

crispappletart Funnily enough, I agree, but for the second paragraph of your comment, I get sad thinking about it. It’s because I know EXACTLY why young people are so addicted to social media and the internet. It all comes down to school and education. I mean, so much stress is put onto students to learn vapid and meaningless guff that they don’t even get a say in learning, that they have no choice but to go to the internet. It feels safe there. After all, it’s the place where they can get the most freedom to express themselves and make choices that are meaningful to them and them alone. I mean, it’s not like school is going to provide the amount of mental stimulation to even RIVAL that of the internet’s. With school getting stiffer and stiffer, and expectations getting higher and higher, it’s no wonder students flock to the internet for some time to think and talk about what they want to think and talk about. It provides crude (yet satisfactory) stimulation for a young person’s head so that they don’t find themselves stuck thinking that grades are all that reflect their worth and individuality (which, statistically, most do). The way they see it, it’s the internet or some other addiction - much of which are far more harmful. Frankly, I’m thankful most of them settle with the internet. Young people need time and space to dream, and school obviously isn’t going to give that to them.

Are we supposed to be interested in work? For many, work is just something they do because they need money to live. For me, life isn't about working all of the time. Work is a vehicle I use to move through life. Some folks have great careers and dream jobs, but they are a minority. Not everyone has the resources, both financial and mental to become a doctor or a lawyer, or whatever high-grade professional occupation. Does not being primarily focused on a job that cares little about me, make me lazy? I don't think so. Life does not equal work. That's not an excuse to sit on someone's couch all day, but it isn't justification for being a corporate human resource either. - Gen-X'er

So, YES you are supposed to be interested in (some kind of) "work". Otherwise you're not fit for life or survival. If you do not "work" to produce the resources you need, then someone else has to work for you to keep you alive. So you're a burden on those people. Before socialism, people who didn't work, died.

Over the last 5 to 10 years I have had to teach 16 to 18 year olds how to sweep a floor at work. This is a new problem at work, pretending it isn't happening dosnt help anyone. Use your eyes people. People doing bad things will always try to convince you there is no problem.
I feel sorry for the millennials getting bashed from the older generations. I know a lot of friends who are millennials who work hard and minding their own business and try to live happy and have fun. heck, gen xers were no where near perfect when it came to pop cultures. so why all the bashing? but like the old saying: "haters gonna hate". let's keeping moving forward millenials! keep tearing the walls and if the older generations tries to stop you from reaching your goals and dreams, trample them.

I am a parent of a Millennial. My other friends with kids are experiencing the same issues I have. Of the dozen or so families.....about 30% dodged the boomerang kids.
Problems I found....
-Fail to save money for bills coming up. Daughter and friend's kids would spend the money in their pockets instead of saving for bills. Parents becomes the bank.
-A common link found among the kids is bad credit. They are clueless about saving money to pay bills. Money in hand is meant to be spent - AND FAST. (information is based only on the kids I know...others may not have this problem)
-A job must be worth while....stimulating (can't be hard or boring). The kids end up quitting because they have the bank of Mom and Dad.
-Lazy. The kids have no time to help around the house. This issue is a hit and miss with the other parents.
-Angry at the parents for placing rules on the situation. They want money and a place to live.....However, they don't want accountability. Stay out of my life. Stop judging me. Stop asking me about...jobs/education/future plans. I am an adult now leave me alone. Just let me live my life. Bam she leaves to head to a party.
(part of the problem belongs to the enabler- one or both parents)
Note: Stress is the only thing that flourishes in these households.
Lee Walters, i gotta give credit to you for raising your children in this tough times, especially what's going on in your household. Yes, there will be rebellious offsprings who will go up against rules that parents establish. However, jobs, laziness, savings and such are part of many problems that millenials face today. pop cultures from older generation vs today also is a problem. kids mind their own business when it comes to listening to music (nu rock, rap, j-pop, k-pop, trans-techno, etc) and playing video games, whereas older generations what prime time cop dramas, listening to their generation of music (mostly '80s) and reading suspense novels. this is where older generations and millenials head butt against each other, most of the time. I'd say: ENOUGH!. let us be the way we are when it comes to pop cultures. as for responsibilities, yes, we do need discipline. but please, leave us alone when it comes to animes, mangas, video games, fb, tumblr, twitter, music (j-pops, k-pops, especially), and other hobbies. we read different novels like Maze Runners, Divergent, etc. but so what? it's not like we are hurting ourselves.

The main difference is that Millennials are proud of it and not ashamed, even if the other generations have been criticized and labeled.
