- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. 3 (as it appeared in Super Mario All-Stars).
In this video I play through every stage in the game and finish it without using warp zones.
Since I've already played the NES version and written at length about it (check out the link below if you're interested!), there's not a lot left to say about it here without merely repeating myself.
This remake of it is extremely well done, though. The new graphics look great, the new mix of the soundtrack is even better than the original's music, and best of all, and All-Stars addresses the single biggest flaw of the NES classic - you no longer have to finish the entire game in a single sitting thanks to the battery-backed save feature.
It's the most "16-bit" looking game of the package, so it might seem strange that Mario 3's facelift was somewhat less impactful than the upgrades made to the other games. I think that this is in large part a reflection of how advanced Mario 3 already was on the NES compared to its predecessors.
The older games were revitalized by the new coat of polish, but the NES version of Mario 3 had already started to blur the line between 8 and 16-bit platformers on its own. The upgrades to SMB3 were welcome, but they didn't really seem necessary - the original was still more than modern enough in 1993.
But that hardly matters, because at the end of the day, it's an excellent version of an excellent game, and the ability to save alone makes it worth checking out for fans of the original.

This game's charm and fun factor have not diminished in the slightest over the years. Truly timeless.
Nintendo should have released this game on the Switch for full price with no enhancements, and it'll still be a best seller.

2021 standards are far different than 1993 standards.
@@sdlock83 Didn't they do that on the Wii or Wii U with an anniversary collection, but just used Mario All Stars with nothing else, and got roasted for it? Nah, it would have to sell for a cheaper price, and not full retail if they'd add nothing else to it.
Definitely. I still play SMB 3 often, and typically this version (SNES All Stars). I prefer the NES version for reasons of nostalgia, but the SNES version allows you to save a game...

I heard/saw/read somewhere that Nintendo needed an extra/special chip to get Mario 3 running on the NES.

The airship and Koopa Kid battles are even more awesome to look at and play in the remake. Love the lightning in the background, gives them a darker vibe.
Oh yeah! Been looking forward to this one. One thing that always cracks me up is how different the transformations of the kings are compared to their 8-bit versions.
I still live this version of Bowser’s castle, too. Those lasers came out of the blue back in the day, and sometimes they still catch me off guard.
Gotta love that Super Mario All-Stars is also available on the Nintendo Switch Online Service too!!

This certainly brings me back. Before I had even heard of the NES thanks to Animal Crossing, my diminutive naive self was introduced to SMB3 by way of the magic of the SNES. This was my favorite of the collection, and years later, the GBA port would use the same graphics and music.
I've always wondered what they were discussing before the lights came up.

The All-Stars version of Super Mario 3 is what I always think of when I think of Mario and Luigi. Not just because of this stellar SNES remake, but because it is this design they used in Super Mario Bros. X and Mushroom Kingdom Fusion as well!
World 3 in my opinion has the best overworld music. It's so chill and relaxing to listen to.

Compared to the other games, the remaster isn't that much of an upgrade, due to the fact the original NES version already pushed the 8-bit console to its limit. Nevertheless still a great port! I can still play that anyday, and is fun to compare with Super Mario World.

Honestly to me it's cool how much specific charm Nes smb3 has to me. Like Each airship having more color variants. Desert airship looking darker and cool in contrast to the sunny levels seen before. Although I like mint green background color on, 4th airship? And the wild 80s/90s jagged background from world 3's castles. If that's the right term lol, but it's interesting for sure. Like them both, but that's just some things I like about Nes smb3's aesthetic lol

Okay exactly what needs to be done to make the blue mushroom houses/"shop of strange and wonderful things" appear?
If you collect enough coins on certain stages it'll show up when you go back to the map. I think I showed all of them except for the one in world 7. You need to save a frog suit to get to all the coins in that one and I always forget. I think they're called ghost houses if you wanna look them up.
Super Mario Bros. 3 NEEDED a save feature. It’s the one thing I didn’t like about this game. Luckily, the SNES and GBA versions fixed that.
they could've used some password feature like Mega Man, I never had the time to complete the game in one go and it always felt like doing a speedrun 😑
@@zaxele I wonder what it would take to make smb3 with an added password feature. With the 8 worlds, and 28 items. Password with Goombas, Koopas, piranhas and buzzy beetles could be cool.
Warp whistles were added to help combat the lack of save, I’m sure. Still it’s way better being able to save!
But what if I wanted to complete all the levels? Skipping to the end isn’t always fun.

I spend days it was a Christmas vacation almost 7 days off and those days Nintendo was like having a new car or a new house because every time someone had a new game they come over and throw it on this was great movies popcorn on the stove or popcorn maker you didn't want to talk on the phone because you have missed your turn to play a game all day all night Fridays and Saturdays into Sunday morning do you chores and do the same thing again the following weekend

I remember beating all three of these in a row I could never be the Lost levels one part one was difficult as always part 2 was a challenge firstly if we haven't played in a long time but part three just like I never left home you have no idea how many memories is behind part 3 and part 1 the good old days of regular Nintendo and super Nintendo I call it friend history because blockbusters good movies Toys R Us and cereal commercials and places to go things to do or Fridays and Saturday Sunday mornings too

A true classic indeed, I still remember my first time playing tyhe NES version at a friends house. I didn't even know it was out at the time, but my friend said he had it, and he indeed did. We ended up staying later than expected playing it, and I got home late and bitched at for it by my parents.
My mom would secretly put the game on layaway at K-Mart, I never knew she had put money down on it. Weeks later, she put the game in an unusual place, told me to check the pantry for a snack or something, said where to look and everything (seriously she was going to tell me what to snack on, I knew something was afoot). I moved an item out of the way to grab said snack, instead of the snack being there, a brand new boxed SMB 3 was sitting plain as day, right there in front of my eyes (She got me on that one I admit). I was FUCKING STOKED, I had my own copy! To this day, I still have that cart, the box long gone, plus I have the GBA remake, with the annoying Charles Martinet speech, and of course, THREE copies of SMB All Stars in my collection. One was my original bought copy (The Million Copies Sold variant), the other 2 were copies that floated for free into my lap over the years (original prints).

The Mushroom Kingdom really needs some military strength if Bowser's army is that huge. They shouldn't just leave everything to one human guy. They'll never be able to defend themselves if Mario ever decided to retire and go home.

I met more best friends with Mario All-Star the first Mario game was home brothers and sisters nieces and nephews friends would never want to go home or I'd go to the house to play it we would never want to go home nobody ever had phone time we had VCR time great movies great toys great cereal even if you didn't have no milk you figure it out you got bread you sometimes use the peanut butter or the syrup or if you got cheese and eggs you got French toast the thick bread french toast this is a dream you can never make up Mario was the birth of friendship
And when you beat Mario 3 he was the greatest of all times and then you had to deal with something like skill Mario 3 was one of the best Mario's too was strange cuz those days nobody can figure it out and the book on Nintendo was almost $50 Mario 1 2 3 Zelda 1 2 mega Man's was $50 and in school 25 books $25 for a book it was expensive never could get it no matter how many chores you did in a week
