History of Military Kit & Weapons: Generations of change & Improvements 1952-1993 | with Rick Lamb

  • This is Part-2 of this video; the first part covers the gear from 1952-1993.
CSM(Ret) Rick Lamb has been collecting military uniforms and equipment his whole life. As a historian, he appreciates that history not only repeats its self; but you can see patterns of innovation. As he puts it: We always take a "Face Shot" at the start of a new conflict, because we are fighting with gear from our last war. Peacetime militaries often go back to being "spit-n-polish", with pretty soldiers better trained & equipped for parades than combat. After the initial "face shot," we see great innovation; necessity truly is the mother of invention.
In this video, CSM Lamb will take us through each generation of military kit, weapons, and uniforms; starting with the Viet Nam era. Each table will discuss not just the changes but, more importantly, WHY the changes were made. Some are good, some are not. However, it is awesome to see the thought processes behind these decisions. There truly are great innovations when combat requires them. My favorite example of this: In a single generation, we went from Bi-planes to Jet Planes, in WWII.
What about the weapons? Yep, I love these ole rifles as much as you do. So, Rick and I are going to get together, with a couple hundred pounds of live ammo; and we are going to film many more videos with these guns, including the older WWII versions. Stay tuned.
I hope you enjoy the video, and a special thanks to CSM Rick Lamb for sharing his collection and vast knowledge for us here, free, on the internet. Strength & Honor, TR.

Now you’re getting into my era, post Vietnam though. I joined the Army NG in 1979 and went in active duty with the 82nd Airborne in 1983, just in time for Grenada. When I joined the NG we had pickle suits and were just getting our first BDUs when I went on active duty. The early BDUs were heavy and had a huge collar, basically, whoever designed the uniform was definitely garrison oriented. After Grenada we were allowed to wear the older Vietnam era OG-107s and lightweight camis which both beat the hell out of the BDUs at the time. As for General Bowra, he was the 5th Special Forces commander during Desert Storm while I was in 5th Group. Coming back I finally got to see the new desert BDUs and desert boots, but when I was injured in November 1992 most of the Team guys still didn’t have any of the new desert uniforms, but the cooks, clerks and admin guys were all set.
LOVED this video, it brought back a lot of memories. Thanks Karl.

I have some regret that I didn't serve a full 20 or 30 years, but oh, well. I am grateful you Sergeants-major made this series on US military uniforms and shared your history and background. I knew some excellent NCO's while I was in service, but unfortunately I knew some really piss-poor ones, also, and the bad ones made up a big part of why I left. Those of us in the USMC NEVER, EVER worn that garbage on our utility uniform. We always wore black miniature chevrons on our collars. We never had name patches on our utility blouses. The left breast pocket had a black stenciled eagle, globe, and anchor with USMC under the emblem. We did however spit-shine (in garrison) our black lightweight boots that were designed for rapid movement on foot versus previous boot designs. Our load-carrying equipment "deuce gear or 782 gear" came from the Army. We also never painted giant white stars on our mechanized equipment such as Jeeps, 6Xs, Gamagoats etcetera.

I was a muddy boots soldier '69-'98 ......butt pack to large Alice ruck.......Ops Group at JRTC was weighing the rotational unit rucks in '93....individual soldier load was criminally heavy.....we fought WWll and Korea with A bags and First Shirts who could anticipate and make it happen for troopers. I am adamantly opposed to the trend to hang more stuff on a foot soldier. I doubt if that has slowed down. I remember Gen Ward LeHardy (I was his brigade S3 1983) telling me that somewhere around 30 days in serious combat ANYTHING that was not value added was GONE. Enjoyed your presentation. I always found it so amazing how there's such a disconnect between some of the most awesome memories I have and the bullshit that everyone goes through while serving. Conventional units when I first joined in 90 many of us mirrored the special forces In or tactics and gear. In 1992 with 2nd Armored Div (Forward) in Garlstedt germany . Our squad won the Usuer Small Infantry Squad competition in germany. We beat every other squad in our battalion to go onto the USSUER small Squad Infantry Competition to end up winning. Many units had including rangers we went up against us dodged in several small squad patrolling objectives. really proud of our little platoon squad for doing that , we trained hard everyday then competing on our north Germany base of two infantry company's in the battalion sized kasern to going to the finals in Bad Tolez. after we returned from Desert Storm/Shield late 1992. I still remember the training in the snow to this day.

Joined in 1993. I served under the last of the Vietnam guys. My favorite uniforms are the Vietnam OD green. I used to wear the jungle Od green boots for 2 years till I was told they were not authorized. I worked with the Rangers who were in Somalia. I would see Phipps and Floyd every week. I had chocolate chip BDUs. I wish I could find my desert green cross cross jacket. Nice video.

You're not in the Army for 20 years. You're in the Army for 1 year 20 times. It's always changing, and you will see the same changes come back around if you are around long enough.

Now, you're talking about my era. My father told me about the gear he used in the Pacific during WWII, and later in Korea and Vietnam. I came in in 1976 and used that gear through the 1980's when we first started issuing the newer BDU's.
