I dont carry a pistol or a rifle. I carry a pocket mirror. When confronted with the threat, I draw my mirror and repeat "Karl Erickson" three times. This summons Sergeant Major Erickson, who kills the threat, and then calls me a dumb ass. Then I have to do push ups while singing Balad of the Green Berets while he laughs.

@@mattwalters6834 Shot placement would have to be considered for both pistols and long guns. That being said statistics show that you're much more likely to survive being shot with a pistol than with a rifle or shotgun. I've even heard of a case of someone being killed by an air rifle and that person died from infection as he was shot in the abdomen. I guess shot placement had everything to do with that, but the terminal ballistics of an air rifle, a .22-LR or a 9mm are vastly different. Now comparing the terminal ballistics of a 9mm to a 5.56, 308, or a 12 gauge for example, with the last 3 examples, shot placement isn't nearly as critical as with the 9mm.

Literally just the other day I was reading an article Greg Ellifritz shared about how if you get shot with a pistol, and you make it to the hospital while your heart is still beating, you're almost guaranteed to survive.
People don't like being told handguns are shitty weapons, but it's the truth. The main difference is ergonomics relative to the individual shooter. Pistols are tools of convenience (the most useful tools are the ones you have on you). There is a commonly repeated adage of "Your pistol is only there to get you to your rifle" which is a bit of a misnomer. A pistol is with you all the time; a rifle is with you some of the time. And as for the idea that a pistol is somehow more maneuverable than a rifle... If you don't have the patience to learn how to properly maneuver a rifle, then I guarantee you will not be an effective pistol shot under duress. Anything you can mount from the shoulder is far easier to get fast, accurate hits with.
I literally say this same thing since I am a defensive handgun instructor... The best pistol is the one you shoot the best. For most people, that is going to be 9mm. There are two things I tell novice shooters that they need to understand: The hidden advantage of 9mm is that you can train on it more than any other duty caliber. And if you are training correctly and competently with a pistol, it will directly translate to rifle skills. So train like a mofo on a pistol, but bring a rifle to a gunfight... if you can!
(PS. Karl I would recommend some 5.56 ammo that Federal loads called T556TNB1. It's literally the SOST bullet optimized for shorter carbine or SBR length barrels. It's what I run in 5.56, highly recommend for duty/defense.)

  • @puma51921
    @puma51921 Před 3 lety +13

For civilians you will probably only ever have a pistol in a public environment. If you use a rifle you are probably going to prison. Yes i know you will be alive. But who wants to be a boy you for the next 20 years.
Having said that. I've seen a lot of people shot with pistols. Some go to hospital and leave same day. Some stay in hospital and leave in a few days. Some stay in a bag.
Everyone i have seen shot with a rifle or shotgun gets to stay in a bag unless it's a limb shot.
Best advise i can tell you is don't get in a gun fight unless you have no other option. The consequences if you are not in a soldier in a war are not good. Even if criminally cleared you will spend a fortune defending your self. You may lose civilly especially if you are in a liberal city or state.
The only time you will probably be ok is on defense of you life in your home. In public you better have no other option. Been there done that. Take for what is worth to you.

This is a really interesting video. I didn't expect that result. I keep a pistol w/weapon light close enough that I can be in action within 2-3 seconds after waking up, as long as I'm awake enough to fight. That's for if the bad guy is already on top of me, or damn near. If I have an extra 5 seconds, and they're not in the room yet, I'm going for my shotgun or rifle. Either one will end a fight more reliably than a pistol.

That depends on the type of caliber but I have formula to help choose correct rounds.
      Requirements
Chronograph to help measure muzzle velocity out of the specific weapon of choice.
Balistics gel to capture the bullet for analysis.
      Micrometer to identify the size.
      Step1
Get muzzle energy which is the weight and muzzle velocity (use chronograph).
      Step 2
Identify the size of the bullet retrieve from ballistics gel.
      Example
      9MM and .45 ACP has a muzzle energy of 400 - 750 joules.
      9MM (.360) Diameter
      .45 ACP (.450) Diameter
If 9MM is hollow point they normally expand to 1.7 (so .600) and .45 ACP is full metal jacket
Lets say both are 600 joules but 9mm is hollow point
      .600 / .450 diameter x 600 joules is 800 /600 joules = 1.33X.

There's 2 problems with the 55gr FMJ's. They regularly do great in gel tests but, depending on where you hit a bad guy, they can also 'ice pick' through. Their terminal effect on tissue is entirely dependent on velocity(which is effected by both barrel length and distance), twist rate and even the angle they hit flesh. Yaw and tumble or straight through aren't an issue in combat, but for self/home defense soft points are a better choice. The second issue is that barriers like drywall might as well be tissue paper for any FMJ. Again, this can be addressed with soft point ammo. Two I've tested with good characteristics, Winchester ranger 55gr and Winchester Powerpoint 64gr, reliably obtain sufficient penetration on gel/tissue while also breaking up into lower energy fragments after striking drywall. The 40gr Hornaday and Fiocchi VMax loads also break up through drywall but lack decent penetration in soft tissue.
As to why I carry a pistol, to paraphrase the late Paul Gomez, last time I walked into the bank with an AR slung across my chest they got really nervous.

Years ago I watched a presentation by an ER doctor and his experience was if you were shot by a pistol, they can probably save you, more or less. If you are shot by a rifle, probably not. The amount of damage done is exactly as shown in this video. Yes size matters but in this case velocity matters more.

    • @subjer0
      @subjer0 Před 3 lety +1

Yup the velocity and the fact the 223/556 shape of the bullet makes it want to tumble once it penetrates flesh. That's why 9mm ball is crappy self defense ammo. It doesn't have the velocity, the size of the bullet doesn't dump like a 45, and the shape of the bullet just creates ice pick wounds and over penetrates.

Realistically, this probably the use of each weapons types.
    Sniper Rifles
    -Long Range Shooting
    -Hunting
Normally stays behind enemy lines to provide info and support fire and hunting big animals. Sadly, some snipers exceeding .308 are long, heavy and slow (which cant engage multiple targets) and will be outbeaten by short, light and fast guns (which can engage multiple targets).
    Shotguns
    -Self Defense (buckshot)
    -Hunting (slug)
    -Breaching (buckshot)
    -Anti Vehicle (slug)
Good for defending against 1 or 2 targets or moving targets. Slug can take down some vehicle. However, its too risky at close range against ARs, SMGs or LMGs.
    Sub Machine Guns
    -Close Range Suppressing Fire
Light weight and compact, its high rate of fire and controllability allows easy and fast movement and endgagements, . However, most cant penetrate body armor and has lesser effective range.
    Light Machine Guns
    -Medium Range Suppressing Fire
Contrary to SMGs, they use rifle round, have longer barrels, are heavier and are mostly used stationary but they also are used for suppressing fire. Use them behind people using ARs and SMGs.
    Assault Rifles
    -Long Range Shooting
    -Hunting
    -Close Self Defense
    -Close Range Suppressing Fire
    -Medium Range Suppressing Fire
Mostly has characteristics of Shotguns, Snipers, SMGs and LMGs and can penetrate Body Armor.
    Defensive Handguns
    -Concealed Carry
    -Close Range Self Defense
    -Close Range Combat
    -Fast Switch
    -Great Back Up Weapon
-Great For Getting To Your Main Gun
ARs and Hanguns are probably the most versatile weapons. I would say choose a pistol/hangun over shotguns for close range combat. However, I would be okay using Shotguns for close range self defense.

If you looked at the blocks side by side after the test you can see how much more permanent damage was done by the rifle. Around 70% of people shot with handguns don't stay at the scene of the shooting but 97% of people shot with rifles and shotguns do. A large portion of people chose a handgun for defending there homes putting them at a much higher risk. Center-fire long guns are by far the best choice for stopping most people with just one shot, this way you can move on to the next person quickly.

A few key points here are, he was using standard military ammo, which as he stated is not intended to kill as much as it is to wound. For a standard law enforcement officer patrolling the streets, at least where I live, only top level hollow points are allowed on duty, more lethal, less penetration. Besides, as we all must know, shot placement is key, and pistols are great for building clearing. Now, don't get me wrong, all my respects to this gentleman, I really like his channel and the great info he puts out here. I would agree on the fact if you could only carry one firearm in a going into battle situation, rifle would more than likely be best, because that is what most others would probably carry and have a reach and power advantage over a person with a pistol. There is a reason, wars are fought with rifles and not with pistols alone.
