  • Everyone likes "Ballistic Gel" Videos. So, here's a quick one comparing a similar sized 5.56mm rifle against a 300 Blackout rifle.
    Mike, a great friend of the TR team, just happened to stop to shoot and brought his home defense 300blk rifle. He asked about performance... Well, that's a perfect time to film a video, right?
    We didn't use any fancy ammo; just "VMax" type hunting ammo that Mike uses for home defense against the closest "VMax" type ammo I could find at my house (my daughter's hunting ammo). Very similar bullets, just different calibers.
    I hope you enjoy the video. TR.

    When engaging the enemy at distances of 0-20 meters as in a home defense scenario.

      @Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez A shotgun is fine. Like the maverick 88. Available at Walmart or Academy sports and outdoors (pre corona and race riots) for $189. Extremely affordable weapon. And it doesn't look scary so no one is tying to ban it. At least not yet.

    • @bigredwolf6
      @bigredwolf6 Před 4 lety +32

      Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez Who gives a crap what politicians say anyway? Most of them suck. I get your points. My shotgun works for me, because I live alone, and my neighbors are like a mile away. No bystanders to worry about. Good stopping power. Very reliable. And it’s what I could afford. I could’ve also bought a hi point pistol, but I don’t like how they feel, and I’m not fond of handguns. If I could, I would buy a 9mm carbine like the Ruger PC 9mm but that’s like $530.

      @Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez Shotguns' have been around for quite some time. Shotguns are not designed for war they are designed for hunting bird. I think you need more trigger time on a shotgun if you can't effectively use a shot gun at 5 meters.

    • @shredmunds7660
      @shredmunds7660 Před 4 lety +13

      @Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez Federal Flight Control buckshot gets tight groups out to 25 yards and is a very effective fight stopper. If a person understands the limitations and practices with a pump action shotgun they can get most home defense situations handled very effectively. You should train with a shotgun and find out for yourself and if you still dont like it great, at least you will have an informed opinion at that point.

    • @jimyeats
      @jimyeats Před 4 lety +9

      Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez I don’t think it’s “overhyped”. I think it is just a known standard. It isn’t the fastest, doesn’t hold the most rounds, a but heavy exc exc, but it’s fairly simple and reliable, and is devastating when it meets the target. And most importantly people are FAMILIAR with it, which usually means they are competent with it.
      I don’t think it’s the best option though, nor would most “gun guys”. But to say it isn’t accurate past 5-10 yards just isn’t correct. Just load dependent.

    300 and 556 is like a new 45 9mm debate. That's all we needed.... It doesn't matter what you're shooting it all comes down to placement. @@LDJ42069 There's sub sonic everything. It's only goofy if you're unfamiliar with other ammo or how 300 blk out came to be.
      The big stores definitely have sub 308. There is a section at stores that just hold sub rifle rounds for various cal .22 223 308 etc, seperate from reg ammo.
      The ironic thing is the .300 blk section is stuffed full of super sonic and whatever sub sonic is left over looks expensive.

    I went 300 blk for HD/truck gun about as soon as it was out. I'm kinda a ballistic nerd, hand loading an all that, the huge advantage 300 has over 556 in these roles was impossible for me to overlook. having a small, compact 10.5" AR that's so versatile is the cat's meow. The ammo cost is the problem with the 300, but as a hand loader it didn't really make any difference to me. I had the stuff to make the rounds long before I had the gun. Now we're starting to see cheaper steel case ammo even. I like the 556 (have more 556 than 300blk, 6 vs 3), but the 300 is far better in the HD/cqb role or even hunting IMO.

Most x39 ammo comes in two sizes .308 and .311 and depending on the ammo you use you will need to make sure you have the correct sized barrel or accuracy and pressures will vary. Couple that with having to mill out the bolt face a lot more to accommodate the x39 case and you have weakened the bolt considerably which can lead to broken bolts. The 300 BO has none of these short comings and gives very close performance to the x39. Cant find ammo...thats why you reload, then when there is a shortage of ammo, its no problem! Its how I have beat every ammo shortage since Y2K.

The 223/556 speed degrades slowly because it is very aerodynamic. BlackOut however is one of the most niche rifle rounds because it's made for short barrels. And has even more accuracy problems after 150 yards because it travels so slowly, even when super.

      @@kalidilerious Who told you blackout has accuracy problems beyond 150 yards? It has the same range as a 7.62x39 AK in a 16" barrel, and if you use the NATO loads (Tac TX monolithic which is really expensive) it has longer range than 7.62x39. Heck, I shoot cast 135 grain bullets out to 400 yards regularly and get 10" groups (paper plate sized).
      You might be confusing it with the 147 grain loads which do have a reduced range of only around 500 yards but that's due to the weight. 7.62x39 160 grain loads also have that reduced range as well.

Where are you aiming? because the drop off is significant at that range and the bullet slows down losing it's accuracy. • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj Před 5 měsíci

       @kalidilerious I think the issue is your zero, although I'm using a 16" rifle but a 10" shouldn't be that bad. I zero at 50 yards. At 200 yards I hold on the head for a chest shot. At 400 I hold about 5 mils up.
      Regardless of the drop though, your groups should not be opening up that much. Travis haley had a video when it first came out with him using 6" barrel and making hits at 800 yards. He was using the nato loads with the tac-tx though, although you still should be capable of that accuracy with any regular 125grn FMJ.
      If you have a chronograph I would get the velocity and then play around with a ballistic calculator to see what your optimal zero distance is.

      Very true. I noticed that when I was reading off the remington load data. AAC's original data is much hotter, and that is what gained NATO acceptance. From what I have found, you may want to switch from 150grn to a 110-135 grain. I found you get more energy that way, even in shorter barrels.
      I'm running 135grn cast bullets at 18grn of H110 for 2118FPS from a 16" barrel giving 1823J

    I think it’s worth noting what barrel length your 5.56 test gun had. That’s one of the huge differences between the two cartridges is that the ideal barrel length for .300 BLK is 9” whereas you’d need at least 11.5” or 12.5” to get enough velocity for 5.56 and 16” if you want to shoot at any longer ranges effectively. 5.56 fmj was designed to fragment upon impact but only does so reliably above 2,500 fps so a longer barrel is necessary to achieve that. Having a barrel that’s at least 3 inches shorter is definitely an advantage in close quarters like your home. I think beyond that, it’s down to personal preference since in the end, a rifle is a rifle.

    Great video for a detailed birds eye view (if you will.) I see a lot of people mentioning 300 BLK is too expensive to shoot. Compared to 5.56 yes, you will be paying more per round but the advantages IMO out weigh the cons. With the ability to get great terminal ballistics out of a 7"-9" barrel, the maneuverability in CQB conditions such as HD, is pivotal. With 2 300 BLK builds myself, I dry fire for countless hours to offset the cost of the rounds. The "price" isnt as bad when you arent sending as many rounds down range and are going to the range for recoil management and refinements of techniques practiced while dry firing.
    I highly recommend at least a 300 BLK upper. Give it a try and sell it if you dont like it, you'll be able to offload it quickly in this market. Its a great truck/bed gun and the compact package with terminal ballistics you cant have with 5.56 is its most appealing aspect.
