    SUMMARY
    - When making a promise, children link their little fingers and say a certain vow, different in every culture. In fact, during the Edo period, bandit clans had a ritual of cutting off their right little fingers to prove their loyalty.
    - Myrmecologists worldwide made an estimate that 1 to 10 quadrillion ants are living on Earth now. That means there are more than 1 million of these insects for each human!
    - There are several times more plastic flamingos worldwide than there are live ones. The latter are counted at 2 to 3 million, while the number of their plastic counterparts reaches almost 1 billion.
    - As a matter of fact, the "berry" of the strawberry isn’t at all its fruit. It’s just an overgrown receptacle that carries the pure fruit on it.
    - The banana plant is, in fact, giant grass, and bananas are its berries. According to the definition, a berry is a "soft and juicy fruit containing several seeds."
    - A pyrosome looks like a giant transparent and hollow worm, but it, in fact, consists of thousands of organisms that glow in the dark and replicate themselves.
    - Mithridates VI of Pontus had been taking small doses of various poisons since childhood to work up an immunity to them. During the riot, the Romans wanted to take him hostage, and Mithridates tried to poison himself but couldn’t because of his training.
    - Our thumb is as long as our nose, and our lips are as long as our index fingers.
    - Few know that the space suit of the first man on the Moon was made at a factory which produced bras and lingerie in Dover, DE. Well, we just hope Neil felt comfortable in it.
    - Russia’s surface area is 17,098,246 sq. km., and Pluto’s surface area is 16,650,000 sq. km.
    - Every dolphin has its signal name that appears in adolescence and is kept their whole life. It’s known that dolphins can tell their relatives’ signals from all the rest.
    - The first students came to Oxford in 1096, while the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325. That means the university is 200 years older.
    - Keep an eye on the shark: when it has passed by you, try to find a way out of the water. However, if you can’t and have to defend yourself, hit it on its gills, eyes, or the tip of its nose.

    "If we lived in darkness, we could stay awake up to 36 hours and only need 12 to regain energy. Then why has humanity chose day? We could have much better ability to see in the dark. Reason is because since we are usually looking at a bright sun, our eyes need to adjust so we don't see the true brightness in order to prevent harmful radiation to take effect. That's why we can't see well in the dark, especially since we sleep through the night hours. A lot of people prove it a true fact that the sun does make you sleepy because it's very bright, and your eyes use a lot of energy to adjust sight and block it out. If we slept through the day, our eyes would be able to detect a grain of diamond reflecting from a candle light that is over seven yards from the candle and twice that distance from you. The reason you'd be able to see it is because your eyes need to adjust to not block any light off and absorb as much as possible to detect even the slightest movement of a star in the night moving slightly, most likely moving because the earth rotates and moves your position and viewing angle. And the reason we would be able to stay up is because you get sleepy from using all the energy to adjust when looking at a bright light, but seeing only faint and weak lights that barely reflect to a radius of a micrometer to the surface it reaches (and I'm talking about the diameter of the lighted circle coming from the reflective surface of an object, or a light producing object like a laser pointer). For example, only 6.47298% of people will notice a tiny piece of glitter on the floor because of the small amount of light it reflects and even when the light is strong, the size will obscure it to hide it in plain sight. But with vision of a nocturnal person, 98.3706% of all people would notice it because to them, it's actually as bright as a diamond the length of a cubic centimeter reflecting light from the sun while the diamond is being rotated in it's place. In any case, I prefer living in a night world.

    but then I watched a shark movie (forgot the name) and when I thought the lady was gonna punch the sharks nose... she gorged its eyes out with her bare fingers. that's a little too far don't ya think?

    I can say for absolute certain that if you "stay still" while you're in the water with a shark, regardless of what kind it is, it's still most likely going to investigate you and by that I mean they'll swim close to you and, depending on what kind it is, it might still bite you. If you can, try to go to the sea floor or as low as possible instead of just staying still and waiting for the shark to pass because a lot of sharks often swim upwards to attack. Seriously, do not "stay still" if you see a shark near you when you're at sea.

    • @MimiUsagichan
      @MimiUsagichan Před 7 lety +19

      Um no, they're not gonna investigate you. And swimming to the ocean floor will only attract it's attention. They are only interested in food and unless you are swimming or bleeding it won't consider you food. So it'll just swim away because it will not recognize you as food. But when you *are* in it's way you have to move as slowly as you can without disturbing the water.

    • @yazyaz1887
      @yazyaz1887 Před 7 lety +4

    Many sharks can be intimidated by swimming toward them.
    They are afraid you are coming to eat them.
    I watched a video of a guy who swam with great whites while his camera man was in a cage. He had a long pole, about ten feet. When a great white would come close enough to check him out, he would swim toward it. Nine out of ten would quickly swim away. The one that didn't would keep circling him till he could touch it with that pole and they would swim away as fast as possible.
    Most sharks are careful about approaching possible food because they evidently know they could become food if they guess wrong.
    I hope I never have to check this out in real life.

    • @TheDrexxus
      @TheDrexxus Před 7 lety +21

      Yeah, I often forget I have them because it isn't really something that comes up all that often except the occasional mention every once in a blue moon.
      Ann Hodges is related to me by blood on my father's side of the family and she was actually good friends with my grandmother on my mother's side of the family.
      After the meteor hit her, a couple of small pieces broke off of it and scattered around the room, she ended up with a couple of tiny fragments (one of which is one of the pieces I have) while the biggest chunk was given to the sheriff who then turned around and gave it to air force. Eventually they released it back but there was a big legal battle over who owned the thing because while Ann was struck by it, she happened to be in someone else's house and on their property at the time that it hit her.
      She eventually won out all the legal battles and had ownership of it but all of that stress from constantly fighting with those people over the piece had wore her down mentally and emotionally and by the time she had ownership of it, no one really cared about it anymore. At the same time that the piece hit her, another piece landed in a field nearby and that guy sold it to the Smithsonian. Even though that chunk broke off and wasn't part of the meteorite when it hit her, it was technically part of the same piece that fell through the atmosphere before splitting up and after the Smithsonian got their hands on it, demand for the meteorite chunks died down.
      So in the end she kept her chunk that bruised her up and couldn't find a buyer for the thing. Her friend, my grandmother, offered her a few dollars for it because she was interested in it but Ann didn't want to sell it for so little, so she instead gave her one of the tiny pieces from the impact. Eventually she decided to donate her chunk to a museum because she began to see it as a source of stress and anxiety and my grandmother made her another offer for it, so she broke off a larger chunk that weighs about 2 pounds and sold it to her and donated the other piece to the natural history museum.
      When I was a kid, whenever I went to my grandmother's house, I always saw that little rock and wondered what it was and one day I asked my grandmother and that is when she told me what it was and the whole story surrounding the thing and she gave me the tiny piece. This was in the late 80s. My grandmother died not too long after and she didn't leave a will or anything (which was pretty common in my family) so everyone just sort of got together and split things up and I told my aunts I wanted the meteor and they gave it to me.
      So now I have the tiny fragment and the piece that weighs about 2 pounds.
      Thomas, the one in the Smithsonian didn't strike Ann at all, it broke up while falling and landed in a field, though it was part of the same meteor when it entered the atmosphere. There was also a third large chunk that people saw fall from the sky but no one ever found the last piece. My 2 fragments are from the largest piece that actually hit her. The natural history museum has a piece that weighs I think 6 or 8 pounds, and mine weighs 2. I believe the one in the Smithsonian also weighs 2.
      I imagine there are a few more tiny pieces that were left around the house and stuck in the roof or attic as well and who knows who has them these days. But unless someone found that third large piece and just never told anyone (or doesnt know what it is), I have the third largest piece of that meteor and the second largest piece of the fragment that actually struck her.
      You have to understand, this was in a very rural area in Alabama where everyone was either family or friend of the family. She was something of a local celebrity right after it happened and was talk of the town for a while but once the legal battle started to control that meteor, it kind of soured the opinions of the community because people didn't like seeing two of their good friends fighting over the thing in court. It was very stressful for everyone involved and by the end of it all, she just wanted to get rid of it.

      If you panic and splash you have a higher chance of getting attacked. Most sharks species are pretty calm most of the time and don't really attack humans on purpose. They usually mistake humans for injured seals sometimes if the person is splashing. We've heard of shark attacks but never really hear of any people who were actually eaten. It's like the sharks think we taste bad lol

    9:55 don't try to hit a shark on its nose you're more likely to end up with your hand in its mouth than on its nose.

      True, better to punch it in its vulnerable spots like the gills, do it as a lost choice. Shark skin is pretty much like the roughest sandpaper, maybe rougher, which would probably scrape your hand
