Budgie! I met Burke Shelley a few years ago, we used to go to the same live music bar called the 147 Club in Cardiff, Wales. Nice guy, and he never wanted any fuss made of him really. He died a couple of months back (he'd been unwell for quite some time). Thanks for playing this. 🙂

Budgie's 1978 album ''Impeckable'' is one of my favorites that showcases the softest ballads, blistering riffs to cold as ice face melting hard blues rock.

This was off Budgie's debut album in '71.....the US release had the song ''Crash Course in Brain Surgery'' on it as well but the album was self titled (Budgie). CCIBS was later released on the UK pressing off their ''In For the Kill'' record in '74. For a first album, Budgie cemented their place in heavy hard blues rock history.....Welcome to the Budgie cage.

Excellent review. I bought this first album on a whim when it came out in 1971.... read the sleeve notes in a Record shop and thought the trio sounded interesting... took it home, played it and was hooked.... bought their next 7 albums as they were released. I first saw Budgie in '72 or '73 in a Birmingham music club called "Bogardes" in New Street (a small venue that was regularly busted by the police) and saw them there on several occasions before twice at Birmingham Town Hall (with local band Judas Priest supporting them). Rape of the Locks, or Guts from this first album are also worth a listen. Keep going Daniel.

Great choice and wonderful review Daniel! This was a great flashback to my youth growing up in Detroit in the late 60' and early 70's. You could hear music like this on the progressive rock radio stations , like CJOM ( out of Canada) that opened up a generation of youth to great music like this. First time I heard this coming out of my stereo speakers my taste in music changed forever. Thanks for playing it and keep up the good work young man. There is a mountain of great music out there for you to discover!!

Budgie were definitely one of the heaviest bands of their time; we have all their albums. Another very heavy and little known band from that time were High Tide; their first album "Sea Shanties" from 1969 shook the earth. A very interesting aspect of them was the almost constant battling of the electric guitar of Tony Hill and the electric violin of Simon House (who later became a member of Hawkwind and the band of David Bowie). A good introduction to them is the instrumental "Death Warmed Up" from their first album; here a link:
    czcams.com/video/LLjLhfvLHt4/video.html
On a musically totally unrelated side note: If you want to see a musician that makes your jaw drop to the floor try Barbara Dennerlein; she does the job of two musicians at the same time! There are lots of brilliant videos of her on CZcams; for starters we recommend this one (with an excellent band consisting of Mitch Watkins on guitar, Rick Keller on tenor sax, Tony Reedus on drums and of course the incredible Barbara Dennerlein)

Budgie are a Welsh three piece band. Budgie formed in 1967 in Cardiff, Wales under the name Hills Contemporary Grass. Their original line-up consisted of Burke Shelley on vocals and bass, Tony Bourge on guitar and vocals, and Ray Phillips on drums. Burke Shelley R.I.P.
The third album, Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (1973), contained "Breadfan", which was covered by Metallica in 1987. Metallica had covered another Budgie song, "Crash Course in Brain Surgery", earlier in their career.
The budgerigar (/ˈbʌdʒərɪˌɡɑːr/ buhj-uh-ree-gah;[3] Melopsittacus undulatus), also known as the common parakeet or shell parakeet, is a small, long-tailed, seed-eating parrot usually nicknamed the budgie (/ˈbʌdʒi/ buhj-ee),[3][4] or in American English, the parakeet.

I appreciate your interest in more experimental British bands of the 70's. Another you might appreciate is Cardiacs, which pioneered what is sometimes called Pronk -- a combination of progressive and punk. In my wisdom, I made my first girlfriend the daughter of the record store and distributor, so I had me some Budgie, although not this one. Demo albums would have the corners clipped off, or a hole punched in it, to prevent resale. And demos were aplenty. There was so much great music at the time, as you're discovering, Budgie sort of got lost in the crowd. Ethos was another band, more proggy, but it too got lost amid the stream. Neither had hit singles OR a seemingly coherent concept album, which allowed for classical music to be squoze through mellotron and moog modalities.
Wales may not have had the starmaker machinery either.

Budgie is a trio. They were good. But this was a time when the greatest groups and albums were being released. So they did not get much if any air play at the time. Another group, Fanny also suffered because of this. There is an excellent Fanny session from French TV here on youtube.

Hard Rock trio that is a bit of a cross between Sabbath and Rush in sound, but make it their own. Bigger in the UK than the US. Influenced many bands.

I hear where Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin got their influence from. Budgie were amazing. Zep and Sabbath I hear alot, yet these guys were first.

'Anne Neggen' or 'Napolean Bona Part 1 and Part 2'. There's many any other really good songs that I'll never quarrel about. IMO, I don't get the Led Zep comparisons. They sound nothing alike. They were a unique flavor, all their own.

Sort of in the same universe, but I highly recommend you check out Man, another Welsh band with a rich discography. Kinda like Budgie in regards to the blues rock, but kinda more prog at times, not that Budgie didn't go into the prog realms, too. Young is a World is a Budgie track I would recommend off the second album, Squawk, with excellent early Roger Dean cover art.
