    Like all 3 of them, but LOVE Budgie !
    One of the best 70's bands in the world, that many americans never heard of.
    And their "calmer" stuff is just as good as their heavier.
    Squawk was my first album i bought from them.
    The 5 first albums from them are top notch !!!

    every VDGG song is different, and no two albums are similar.
    my 2nd fave band! anything in the 70s is worth listening to!!!
    this includes every Peter Hammill song as well! Hammill is amazing!
    but it gets verrrrry dark so you just gotta expect it, but it's always epic for sure. Hammill is extremely theatrical and he pulls it off so well.

    All three songs were great. I think my favorite was the Budgie song.

  • @carlosmachucabustamante2965

    VDGG Peak was in 70-71... you definity have to react to songs like Man erg, Lemmings, Lost, pioners over C, and then... the epic precursor to Suppers Ready..... A PLAGUE OF LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS.!!!!!... 23 minutes of pure roallcoster of musical madness....

    Even as a longtime Van der Graaf and Peter Hammill fan I know they are an acquired taste for some and, somewhat ironically Nick, the two tracks you've heard so far are some of their quieter and more melodic pieces. For a contrast maybe try Ship Of Fools or Pioneers Over 'C' from their live album Vital or possibly more recent material since their reformation. Hammill also has a vast solo output of nearly 40 studio albums and over a dozen live albums and is very hard to pin down to a single style.

    Nick, I agree with you about VDGG, but I highly recommend you check out their epic, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers. I call VDGG theatrical prog, and APoLK is an incredible piece of music.

    Budgie formed and were playing before Black Sabbath. They were just signed after BS, however, they were produced by the Roger Baine and both recorded albums simultaneously at Rockfield Studios.
    Burkes biggest influence was The Beatles and was unaware of Black Sabbath as both bands were from different countries doing their own thing, and later on when Burke head Black Sabbath he wasnt a fan of their "Occult" style as he was a big Christian.
    Budgie's heavy sound has its roots in that they were a 3 piece band and Burke wanted to make them sound bigger than they were when preforming in concert halls.

      @WelshBladerDad Před rokem +2

      Indeed, originally formed in 67 and performed under the name Hills Contemporary Grass I believe, I forget which early Budgie album but there is a song on there that could 100% be a Beatles track 👌

      Budgie played their first gig at The Paget Rooms, Penarth on June 1968, which is over a year before Black Sabbath started playing, so you're definitely right here, but young Burke was a buddhist. He only converted to catholicism in a later point of his life.

    I like all 3 but Van der Graaf remains one of the 5-8 best rock bands from the 70'. Budgie is nice and reminds me of the Canterbury scene. Great sound also. And Saga is always nice to listen to.

    Great reactions to some great music. Thanks for sharing it. Not sure, but I don’t think there’s any trumpet or brass there. I think that’s David Jackson (alto, tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones, flute, piano and backing vocals) using his wind instruments through various pedals.
    I have to confess that Van der Graaf Generator was an acquired taste for *me*. I did not like them the first few times I heard them. But the more I did, the more I started to appreciate their music. It was challenging. Which is often what the best progressive music does: challenge us. I now love them. But it took me years.

    I personally can so hear Budgies influence on Dave Mustaines Melodic structures in the beginning of this song, as well as other songs from their catalogue, very reminiscent of Melodic parts from Megadeths 90's Albums, but then again you can listen to a huge number of bands and tell they listened to budgie, i mean you can almost make Diamondheads Am I evil or some early Priest records purely from parts of Budgie tracks 😄🤘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    I love the Vandergraph Generator album The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome from 1977. Last Frame, Cats Eye, and Lizard Play are all great tunes from that album.
    Overall, I love some of their stuff and find some of it hard to listen to, lol. But Peter Hammel is a great vocalist and you can see how he was an influence of Fish from Marrillion.

    Hi Nick, Interesting marathon choosing less heavier tracks. I still however cannot get into VDGG. Not for me, sorry. Budgie for all I have seen and heard is brilliant. The lead singer looks and sounds like Geddy Lee, especially on heavier tracks. I have never heard any music by Saga so that was new to me. I'm getting a "Foreigner / Toto, vibe from them ....that suddenly goes into a Nazareth rock riff ! Did not expect that ! I am a massive Nazareth fan so this track is becoming the best so far. .... If you get the chance have a listen to the cover version of The Yardbirds "Shapes Of Things" .. by "Nazareth" & include the segued end track "Space Safari" ... The opening rock riff is pretty much the same as on this Saga track. It is a corker of a cover version with several surprises that are .... erm ?... Lets just say on headphones you will go dizzy ! Lol Byee Jim X

  • @mvunit3
    @mvunit3 Před rokem

    Since Budgie (you got it!) has a sense of humor, and its a Bird, picture hearing the "Squawk" (Ssk-wahck) of the bird. I still am amazed at their similarities to the debut & Fly By Night era Rush, and that they are a power trio, and the bassist Burke Shelly is the vocalist with that unique timbre like Geddy. Remember to see the album cover in Roger Deans "Views" book ;). Budgie was a big deal to Metallica as well (and they covered 2 Budgie songs).
    VDGG I haven't heard much but I like it because it _is dense_ and a bit Avant-Garde, and I'm used to that kind of vocals. People say that's the problem with Progressive music, that many vocalists are not very good, but we know of many excellent vocalists in the genre. I see these odd voices fitting with the music (sometimes they don't) and this isn't Pop/Top 40 music with perfect voices singing to formulaic music.
    Saga may come in a close 3rd or 4th to Rush, Kansas & Yes for me. Sadler's voice is perfect (and like Jon Anderson, both have kept their voices all these years!) and their music, musicianship and compositions just improves on each album after (even the "Prog Pop" tracks in their mid period are well constructed). Always loved the keyboardists in Saga, but this was "Peter Rochon" who only appeared on this album. And "Gregg Chadd" was on the 2nd album, but vocalist Micheal Sadler also plays keyboards, and "Jim Gilmour" would be their permanent keyboardist with VERY unique sounds and patches. But Nick, you'll hear Guitarist "Ian Crichton" more in front on the "Worlds Apart" album and on, and he has that muted "staccato" technique like Al Di Meola 🙂.
    *Chapters . . .*
    _The Chapters is the name given to a series of songs that the band revealed over a 28-year period in a mixed-up order, creating a conceptual puzzle. Each song in the sequence was subtitled "Chapter One", "Chapter Two", etc. In its final form, The Chapters tells a cohesive science fiction story concerning the preservation of Albert Einstein's brain, aliens who are concerned with humanity's self-destruction, and the resurrection of the dead through technology.)_
    _The first eight Chapters were issued, out of order, across the band's first four albums, issued between 1978 and 1981. After a long layoff, Chapters 9 through 16 were issued, again out of order, across three album releases between 1999 and 2003. Songs from the cycle have been performed in concert throughout their career. The Chapters were finally released all together in a 2 CD live recording called The Chapters Live in 2005._
    - Saga/wiki-page
    Actually no Van Der Graff from me 🤔 (I think Rudi sent you one, and someone else). And I sent the 2nd Saga thru 7, the 9th and their 11th album 🙂. But you are most welcome :). MORE to come sometime in the future😊.
    - Thank you Narvik for getting Nick (and Lexi) into more Saga, Budgie and VDGG!

    it seems such a long time..just like I rise from a life-long sleep. My pen-pal I once got to know in Novgorod while touring and who was working then on Charisma label has sent me a pile of Van der Graaf + Hammill records. I really have found a few brilliant songs among it as well as the sea of the extremely bad emotionless tracks. The last creations 100 % instrumental under the VDG title turned out to be a pure disaster. I'm not sure if I'm right though. May be I have a bad taste. Sometimes I just wonder for which reason the reactors choose one or another track. If it's Genesis of the late period, then it's Silver rainbow, Home by the sea or even Mama ( ?!! ) yet many a much better tracks like 'Feeding the Fire' are ignored. If it's Siouxsie & the Banshees, It's 100% Cities in dust or Spellbound ( Why not The Sweetest Chill? ) If you're a prog lover you should examine albums like "You" by Gong...Хотя это это всё старьё
