Foilayage Hair Technique - How to Balayage Brunette Hair (Easy Tutorial)
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 8. 03. 2018
- I wanted to share my signature foilayage technique and how I balayage hair. Some of you may not know, but I hardly ever do open air balayage. Instead, I use a foilayage technique I came up with a few years ago.
This is a great technique that allows me to get tons of brightness while still maintaining control and a great blend.
Also, I want to know, do you spell it foilayage, foilyage, or foiliage? I see so many variations. Let me know in the comments!

Iâve been a cosmetologist for 5 years now and Iâve never been happy with my results on this type of color. I gave your method a try today and it turned out absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for being an awesome teacher!
I love this! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm so happy to hear it was helpful!
Wow this is GORGEOUS, FINALLY someone that isn't obsessed with ash lol this was a perfect neutral tone! Great work....
Haha thanks, I love that toner formula, it's the perfect neutral toner :)
THANK YOU! I am soooooo sick of ashy somber tones!
Ya ya!! Me too! I love warmer tones. I actually did a root touch up, and a colour refresh from mids to ends on one of my guests. She was older. And so I did warmer colours on her and it made her look younger! I was totally was pleased with it!

Beautiful, clean end result⥠you are a natural teacher with a calmness and great natural energy. I also love how you didn't over complicate it! I can't wait to try this out. I'm 30 years in the biz and still learning!
Awe thank you so much for saying that, you're so sweet! I'm so glad you learned something from the video :)
What are the products you use?
So pretty! I love seeing brunettes with golden blonde. Itâs so pretty especially for summer and her skin tone. I myself am ash because golden doesnât look good with my skin, but I really love the look
Thank you so much! So happy to hear you loved it.
This is so helpful. I went to Cosmetology school in 2010, worked as a hairstylist for about 2 years once I finished and left the field completely until this year so trends have changed and I havenât been the most confident in color that is trending because of placement and feeling like I needed a refresher. Thank you so much for sharing these tips!
Thank you so much for Sharing! I'm so happy to hear this was helpful!
I love this look and how really easily you got there. So many utubers are so fricking hyper in the delivery itâs hard to see whatâs really going on...... thank you for the simplicity
I'm thrilled to hear you loved it. Thanks for watching!
Love it! Ive been a hair stylist for 14 years and every step was spot on! â€
Thanks so much for watching!
So, I did this exact technique on my client Monday and it came out gorgeous and I felt it did not take nearly as long as how I previously did balayage/foilyage . Thank you thank you thank you!
That's amazing, Beverlee! I'm so happy to hear that this was helpful!
I have tried your technique 2 times now and can i just say i have never loved my balayage so much ! Thank you so much for sharing this ! It has been a game changer for me honestly â€ïž
Thank you so much, Jeili! I'm so happy to hear this has been helpful!
I needed this! I have such a hard time not getting a soft blend when I'm not using root color to blend it into so I love the idea of using conditioner to soften any contamination or possible line of demarcation..... can't wait to try that technique
Thank you for watching! I'm so happy to hear it was helpful!

Jamie,
I have to say, I have been taking balayage classes for a little over two years and am still terrified, the beauty school I went to started teaching balayage after I graduated (in 2012) and Iâve only been shown one way, however, your approach is so simple and so easy to follow along with cuz it makes so much sense! Thank you for reigniting my passion to learn this technique! đ
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so happy to hear this has helped!
I am so happy I came across your account! Iâm new to being a hairdresser and I was searching high and low for someone who can give me tips and tricks and I FINALLY found it! Thatâs you girl! Iâm obsessed with your techniques and canât wait to try them out! Please never stop what your doing here! Your amazing! Thank you again!
Thanks so much Kiara! I'm so happy to hear these have been helpful!
Wow, thanks! I'm going to try your technique tomorrow. I never thought of using conditioner near the roots or a clean brush to clean up my blend, LOL! I always use my finger and the end of my comb to clean it up...sometimes common sense escapes me! Looking forward to future videos!
Haha I actually learned that technique from someone else and I was like, duh! Why didn't I think of that?! So glad you like the video!
LOVE the disclaimer - nice touch jamie!! always great work.
Oh thanks! Just gotta stay legal over here just in case ;)
I love how you use the conditioner as a buffer and arenât scared to admit it ! Better safe than sorry! Love your channel , you explain techniques very well!
Gorgeous! I love the idea of using conditioner on the root, defonately going to try out that technique
Yes! I love finding birthmarks like that!
Thank you for this video! It's so helpful. I've been in the industry for 13 years and I love seeing your techniques.
Brittany Hughes It's so fun huh?! And oh, that makes me so happy to hear!
Absolutely gorgeous! And so simple. I feel like sometimes educators complicate things and donât realize how hard it is to follow! Your method and instructions are super clear. Do you have any tips for combing out the tease? I never want to hurt someone!
Sara Sclafani Thanks for saying that! It means so much to me! As far as combing it out, usually Olaplex No 2 helps, but I typically just use a Wet Brush and It's a 10 to detangle it at the chair after shampooing.
Get the deluxe wet brush. It's a life saver!
Jamie Dana Iâm curious did you tease the front panel I did not notice..
Thanks for the info
Looks like a better technique for me to follow
Having just finished my hairdresser training in college, I have no confidence in my practical work and this has helped so much! I can't wait to try out some balyage, just need to find a product that works for me now!
Thank you so much! I'm so happy to hear this has been helpful!
I have always struggled with balayage and have avoided doing it for so long because i could never get a nice blend and always ended up with patchy areas I tried this method today and it came out beautiful!! Thankyou so so much for giving me confidence to do balayage I no longer have to hide away when someone wants it done âșïžđ
Hey Tasha Gladwish I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Thank you so much for watching.
This is literally my favorite technique I've seen. I think I'm gonna use this on my client next timeđâ€
Awe yay! That makes me so excited! I can't wait for you to try it!
This looks so perfect!
This is what Iâve been looking for, for the last two years! THANK YOU!
I'm so happy to hear this was helpful. Thanks for watching!
She does a great job!! Wow!! I love the way Jamie does these highlights!! Absolutely beautiful!! đ
Thank u so much for sharing your technique!! I used it for the first time yesterday & the blend was so beautiful I shocked myself. Your awesome!!!
I'm so glad to hear this video was so helpful! Thanks for watching!

Goldwell is my FAVORITE hair care line of all time!

Just gorgeous! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial! I think I need one of those combs!!!!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved it. Thanks so much for watching!
Omg I had a client with the coolest white birthmark, right on top her head, her color always looked so good, I lived it and get happy too when I hv a client with a birthmark!
Oh wow, that's so cool! I love it!
I love the way you did this. I love it thatâs itâs in foils.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Love love love this so much. Simple and efficient but still impactful.
Canât wait to use this technique on my client Saturday!!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes!

How was it?!
Best video for hair color, foil placement, and toning I've seen. Thank you for being so understandable!!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks for watching!
loving this technique! I never do open air it's just not my forte..this is similar to what I do but you make it so much less complicated! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! I'm so happy to hear this has been helpful
Thank you for all of these foilayage videos!! I have been a hair stylist for 35 years, have struggled with control on a traditional balayage, so I've always used foils. I still wouldn't have as soft of transitions as I would like. But this technique is so easy and my first client I used it on today---- OMG the results are the best I've ever done!! Thank you again!!
Hey Pamela Smith I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Thank you so much for watching.
This is such an amazing technique! I love the conditioner part. Thank you for sharing â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
Thank you so much for watching!
I'm doing this tuesday and I'm so excited I can't wait to use this technique I'll take a picture and send it to you
Yay! So excited. Definitely take a picture and let me know how it goes!
Results are stunning! I especially love the dry brush clean up. đđŒđđŒđđŒ
Thank you so much!
There are times to times that I do my own hair, and I must say, I always, always, aaaalwaaaays come back to use your technique Jamie.
Hey Lyllies I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Thank you so much for watching.
Today I applied this technique and foil placement on a balayage client and it is the most beautiful balayage I have ever done!!! Thank you so much for your videos! (I'll tag ya tomorrow on my Instagram đ when I post it) â„ïž
Love it! Thank you so much for watching. I'm so happy to hear this was helpful!
can't say much, just wow đđ i can't wait for your next video please videos for clients with gray hair and balayage and babylights
Zien TA Thanks for watching! I'll keep that in mind for another video!
Jamie Dana can't wait xoxo đđđ
Yes! What to do with gray in roots?
Iâm a Cosmo student and bleach is currently my weak spot but this video taught me a lot! Thank you!
I'm so glad to hear that this was helpful!
Iâm a newer stylist and I found you and loooove you! Haha. Thank you for being great and simple!
Thanks so much Alyssa! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Could you do a video educating more on shades eq? Iâd love to start toning with them more but Iâm not very familiar with them.
Thanks for your suggestion. I'll definitely keep that in mind!
Iâve been a stylist for a long time, and I remember the first time I seen a birth mark in the hair. She was 5 years old, beautiful, and was wearing ruby red slippers. She is now in college and just as beautiful.
Love it. Thanks so much for watching!
I LOVE FINDING A BIRTHMARK IN THE HAIR!! I think it's fascinating and so cool.
Wow, seriously turned out gorgeous!! Thank you for sharing your technique!
Love it
I'd love to see your technique for doing a darker color at the base and then balayaging/foilayaging the ends! That's one of the hardest colors for me to do because I think it's tricky to get the blend perfect when you have to blend it into another color!
Jessica Kimball Thanks for the video suggestion! I've had a few other people want to see that too, so I'll definitely make that video!
Her hair looks gorgeous. You did a great job. I was going to try to balayage my own dark hair but now I think I need to go to a professional hairstylist. I don't want as much contrast as she has. I really would just like some lighter browns mixed in with my dark brown hair. Anyways, thanks for posting that.
So glad you loved it! Thanks for watching!
Iâm sooo glad you used Redken in this!! My cosmo school is strictly Redken with dyes and Iâm doing a balayage on a client today and I think Iâm gonna use your formula for the toner. This is so helpful and Iâm so excited. Thank you so much
I'm so happy to hear you loved this. Thanks for watching!
Where are you and can I book an appointment... I need someone who isnât obsessed with ash tones! You are so talented!
I educate full time and do not take clients. I would recommend finding a stylist in your area on instagram! Thanks so much for watching.
I love this!! My only thing that I canât wrap my brain around.. I literally rewatched this 4 times.. is the conditioner. So it gives you a lighter tone to the hair? Lighter than the natural color but darker than the ends? Is that the reason you use it because it dilutes the enlightener or is it to just make sure she doesnât get too bright at the roots? Thanks for the video !! Xxo
The only reason why I use the conditioner is it creates a better blend with the lightener. It doesn't do anything to the color.
That result was mesmerising I love that
Beautiful! I'm definitely going to attempt this technique on my clients!
Love it! Thank you so much for watching!
This has definitely been one of the easiest tutorials I have ever seen! Not sure if you have touched on this subject, but do you have any recommendations on what common colors a stylist should have in their color bar when purchasing a color kit? Especially for blonding services? I always feel like I don't have enough and of course it's not necessarily practical to purchase every single color on the shelf (unless one can afford to, lol). Thanks again for this awesome video!
Thanks for watching! I'm so glad you found it helpful! And no, I haven't touched on that yet, but I should, thanks for the suggestion!
I second this suggestion! Great question.
Beautyfull!! I have a question: does it matter what kind of conditioner you use in the foils?
Not really! I prefer a lighter conditioner but it's up to you. Thanks for watching!
Sharing this video with my entire staff! Thank you for the great tips and the quick video. It's hard to find time to sit through a 90 min tutorial! This was perfect! You do amazing work Jamie!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Thatâs so stunning, good job đ
Super and beautiful thank you, Jammie.
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks for watching!
Do you tease everyoneâs hair? I have a few clients whoâs hair gets tangled really easily. Would you tease their hair?
I do for most client because it gets the best blend. However, I have a few where I can't because it will tangle too much too.
I have a white streak in that same exact place! I've always loved it.
It's so good!
i had to watch this more than once! i absolutely love this!! thank you so much!
Love it! Thanks for watching Sherina!
You do such an amazing đ job!đ„°I need help finding someone out in Riverside, California that does these techniques... help! ? I need my hair done

I have a birth mark a streak of white hair on the top part of my head....when i was younger i used to HATE IT ..because every time i colored my hair that part would turn out lighter than the rest so one day i decided i would darken it....biggest mistake ever!!!! IT WAS AT THIS POINT WHERE I REALIZED HOW LUCKY I WAS LOL !!! i realized I wasnt like anyone else ...never again did i cover it ....I LOVE MY BIRTH MARK LOLđđ
BY THE WAY IM A HAIRSTYLIST TOO LOL...AND I'VE COME ACROSS SEVERAL CUSTOMERS WITH BIRTH MARKS ....

Very beautiful! Love that its not too ashy, seems like almost everyone like to go for a really ashy toned look and its not for everyone, but this colour really works well for this beautiful lady! Love love love it! Plus the technique was spot on really good colour placing! So inlove!
I love seeing this technique with the goldwell conditioner! I love doing my balayage colors with foil because itâs cleaner and gets brighter most of the time but itâs so nice to see other tips and tricks! I will definitely be trying this out! I would love to see a video on how to maybe add a darker root into the mix as well, or how you would go about transforming a highlight client into more of a balayage! *I also love finding those grey streaks and wish so badly that I had one in my hair đ
So glad you liked seeing the technique! And yes, I'm planning on doing more videos like those! Thanks for the suggestion!
Hey Jamie, we gonna try your technique at home tomo with my mum. I wish i could send you the before/after pics . Maybe i can send it if you have email. đđ kisses and love from Turkey â€ïž
Amazing! Tag me on instagram @jamiedanahairstylist and I'll take a look there!
How do you get out the teasing?
We use Olaplex No 2 at the bowl and that helps release the teasing. And for the rest, we use a Wet Brush and a detangling spray at the chair.
Jamie Dana ahhh thank you for sharing your techniques
I like tetangling hair while still a little dry in the top.. Easier..
Jamie Dana I just did my balayage with olaplex and OMG it's Sooooooooooooo soft my hair olaplex is the best
I was watching this video for one particular client today and she has one of the grey birthmark streaks! What a weird coincidence!
I love them!

No, I don't think it would be! Most hairstylist's are eager to learn and want to make sure you get the result you want!
No, girl! Do It. We love that.
