  • The tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki Shikibu is the world’s first novel written a thousand years ago. It’s also the most important work of Japanese literature. In this video I will tell you ten unique things about this novel and tell you how Japan today is similar to Heian period in 10th century. At the end I will compare the tale of Genji with Marcel Proust’s novel in Search of Lost time.

I think the idea of shining beauty that Genji is described to have is the basis for a lot of anime/manga characters. When a person tries to be suave or charming they visually get little cartoon sparks around them.

You have really taken your time in producing this rich analysis along with the most beautiful settings. Thank you for your huge effort. By the way, The white Tiger has been made into a movie and will be screened on Netflix beginning 22 January.
Have a Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy 2021.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes I did spend a bit more time on the last two videos. Did you watch the one on Proust? Merry Christmas and a great 2021 to you too.

I look forward to reading this book; but I imagined The Satyricon to be the oldest known novel.

This made me think about candide, partially. In candide beauty is fleeting.

While this book is obviously good and very important I really don’t think the fantasies of some decedent noble woman is really a reliable source in the “female perspective” lol

    • @emillyrodrigues7524

well, its pretty accurate with what we know today about heian noble women lives then. They were isolated in the "castles" and could talk and see only the other women (concumbines and wives) who lived there beyond her husband. The Tale of Genji talks a lot about the female loneliness and the unnerving ambient they lived, where there was a lot of jealousy and rivalry between the women because of one single noble man.
