I worked briefly in Japan, a long time ago. I read an English translation of Tale of Genji then. Some years later, I read it again in the United States, in a different translation. I am feeling the desire to read it again now that I am retired. It is my favorite book of all time: so sad, so beautiful, and I think of it as primarily a love story between Prince Genji and Murasaki. He has affairs with many women, whom he tries to treat well (in the manner of those times); but raises Murasaki as sort of his ideal Women. When she dies, he doesn't last too much longer after. He, I think, realizes she was his real Love. The unacknowledged son, and his friend, who survive Genji, never quite live up to the legacy of what he was. It's very romantic; and the poetry, careful dressing, rules of behavior, sense of a time period past and passing is unlike anything else I have ever read. I have read some other ancient Japanese literature; but this is in a class by itself.

Since your first talk about "The Tale of Genji", I learned a bit about the history of the stories and also about the fantastic life of the author Murasaki Shikibu, herself. Now I will read the book.

Mrs. Uchitani, this was a lovely story. Thank you for sharing the details and the context of this novel. In my humble opinion, the imperative for dialogue may provide respite from the envy and jealousy one may have. It does not always work, but in identifying such an opportunity, it is also realized that human nature will remain the same irrespective of our evolutionary stage. There is much wisdom in this story, but the takeaway from this is that communication is the key - this, I truly believe.

What a wonderful video! I love the Tale, it’s one of my favorite works of literature. The relationships between people and how different their lives were in that time and place from our own and the many other beautiful moments. Genji playing music on a cold moonlit night… There are also so many wonderful studies and companion books about the Tale of Genji that help to open up its background and world. I also adore the diaries from the Heian period. Kagerō diary, Sei Shōnagon, Izumi Shikibu, Lady Murasaki’s own diary… In the Sarashina diary it’s thrilling to read about how long she had hoped to read Genji monogatari and how difficult it was to get a copy back then, and then how her aunt one day gifted her the complete Tale.

Yes I read it, and it is a wonderfully rich and historically interesting novel. Sadly my kanji is not strong enough so I read the English translation.
