- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Often introduced as a technology-loving comedian from the future - Baratunde Thurston cares enough to engage the world socially and politically with his provocative brand of technology infused wit. In this hilarious talk, Baratunde shows us how to hack a few of our everyday digital experiences.
This talk contains profanity.
Baratunde Thurston challenges conventional narratives on race, technology and politics with his particular brand of intellectually charged humor. He is the CEO, co-founder and hashtagger-in-chief of Cultivated Wit. He wrote The New York Times bestseller “How To Be Black” and served for five years as director of digital for the satirical news outlet The Onion.
When Thurston’s not delivering keynote talks at gatherings such as SXSW Interactive, LeWeb and Personal Democracy Forum, he writes the monthly back page column for Fast Company and contributes to the MIT Media Lab as a director’s fellow. He co-founded the black political blog Jack and Jill Politics, has advised the Obama White House, has more than 10 years of experience in standup comedy, and more than 30 years’ experience being black. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
This talk makes me feel happier & smarter. I'm gonna go sleep it off.
It was only supposed to do one of those things. Please return the video as it is clearly defective.
Video's in the mail. Thank you for your prompt service.
Mohammed Al-Sahaf i
Sleeping either transfers it into long term memory or gets rid of it.
I have no idea how I ended up on this video, what this video is about, or why I watched the entire thing...
The only thing I do know is that i absolutely loved it.
as far as i know he made another one
I went through so many TedXtalks, from psychology, to the apocalypse to hacking and now I have found my way here. The recommended bar is still full of un-watched TedxTalks. I wonder how long it will take to watch them all
@@missyc13 maybe two lifes
Great presentation Baratunde, you are a smart dude!
Thanks Mark!
Your welcome. I really enjoyed your presentation.
OMG thank you. We need more folks like you!
THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!
+Baratunde Thurston HAAHHAAHAAHHHAHAHAH
This is basically combining my two favorite things. Bless this ted talk, and I hope I get to do something this cool (coding and comedy combined!!) at some point in my life.
Trina Bean just promise us that the punchline for every joke will be, "ERROR, FILE NOT FOUND"!
Saw Baratunde on TWIT, then followed him on Twitter. Just discovered this TEDx talk made 5 years ago.
I thought this would be comedy about hacking. Didn't think about the possibility of it being about the hacking of comedy.
Fantastic talk! Very impactful.
That was soo good & funny. I can see why the Onion hired him!
i truly enjoyed that talk
I like the dog with the book on its head. You are the best. The whole topic of laughter is the most important thing in steps to peace. People that make other people laugh are the true peacekeepers (or can be) - I love this whole thing - going to friend you, etc.
Great food for thought. We spend a lot of time in serious thought about serious matters, when what matters most is having fun engaging each other, and exploring different perspectives. Your spin on comedy fells like an invitation to add the verbal chili sauce to a otherwise too familiar conversation.
Very smart and VERY funny....I so enjoyed this talk!!!
Fantastic talk Baratunde. Always hilarious and informative. You inspire so many!
Thanks Samuel! I was going for terrifying so many, but inspiration was a second level goal, so I'll take it.
Baratunde Thurston Nothing about loving PB&J sandwiches is scary. Keep on doing the many great things you are doing sir.
It’s very easy to be violent and clueless...it’s quite the genius to know how to use humor to control it!
Great stuff. Smart. Very funny. Pretty profound too.
As soon as I saw the onion I was ecstatic
was drinking water, saw the fuck you congress logo, immediately paused video to swallow water cuz i knew i was gonna choke
Funny and smart from beginning to end
fantastic!
this was actually good and I surprisingly didn't skip through it
Captain America: language!! 🤣
The woman at 4:02 in the pink is Heartless :')
BWAHAHA!!! I was thinking the same thing!!
But thanx for the beautiful conversation ... we did talk... at least something like that... and I think I know what I wanted to know... thanx for that ... ❤
Did u kno on android google chrome once u hit 100 tabs, instead of giving you the number of tabs like it usually does, it gives u this smiley face: :D
How did you test this?
do that on incognito and it gives you ;)
I'm laughing so hard it this. This guy's awesome.
Brilliant
this was so dope, i wish people on t.v. and such could be themselves instead of being a p.c. personality that every audience could relate, and also has to worry about what they say so they don't rub someone the wrong way and then get flamed one the news about their mistakes. Ya know what i'm saying, random person scrolling through the comments of a video on an endless hunger filled website of trying to fill in your free time and entertain yourself with meaningless content?
Absurdism encourages individuals to break free from rigid belief systems and societal norms that dictate what is meaningful or purposeful. By acknowledging the inherent absurdity of existence, individuals are liberated to explore their own values, beliefs, and purposes without feeling constrained by external expectations.
I totally envy you your mother. What an amazing woman!
i was hoping he would say a number at the end lol
Hilarious😂
Dude in blue shirt at 5:26

I guess living up to that title would be a hard ask for anyone...
RESPECT for you Brother...
.
maybe you should have a talk with Dave Chapelle to get more ideas and sharpen your witsz...
this is brilliant.!!!
9:31 Anybody knows this giftastic company/stuff?
I am looking for it but I don't see anything about Fox80HD in the web. :
I'm pretty sure it's foxadhd
4:58 *runs off to make sure cat videos are still there*
"Share jokes" = old Internet
"Steal memes" = present
Many a joke's been stolen and many a meme shared.
Now i want that how to be *censored* person how and where do i find it
No matter how happy the dog is, it will die... Every animal lover I came across I will need a shirt for these moments.
I should've heard about this guy already.
Yeah, give a shoutout to Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches- I've eaten one almost every school day for the past year and a half
Somewhat funny. It could have been better if the topics were more generic not so America-centered so more people could get them. I love a good laugh and I sneak a lot of funny things to my children's books so that adults can have a cracking good time too reading for the 55th time the same book. Long live the laughter!
2:22 how does he stand like that
TED: "Ideas that we can live without."
Ideas for slaves of corporate culture.
💙💚💙
Rs peanut butter and jelly 💯
Are you related to Babatunde?
Nice talk, though editing could be better.
5:26
I am hacked... Wi-Fi telly
The security camera is watching me... even my telly
The key of my house...
Lol... what's wrong with me... i don't even care... in someway I like it... do I need help🤔🙄
Hope mine personal favourite stalker talks back... she knows
I am going away feeding the cats...
I don't tell anyone that the camera not blinking anymore... (different power supply;) so I have a picture ... i only have one... please smile ... need to see that...
A smile ... a real one
TED sure has a ton of problems with volume. Either the entire video is at 1/4 volume, or the INTRO is twice as LOUD as the rest of the video.
Still wonder what silence means ...
I liked the part where he said buzzwords.
9:47 what about covid instead of ebola
I want eric andre to do one of these.
❤️loVe ❤️You❤
I wish white are more like black...
Come to Sydney-:)))Great Mind!!!🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
After two clangers - the semi colon and the peanut butter and jelly I had to switch off. Sorry
I picture with Snow White reading the book should be funny
Someone who will be my Pokemon friend?
Where are the hacks? OH. never mind.
Lol would have loved to see this talk after trump was elected
Just when I thought I couldn't love this guy anymore...#GoFigure #Blerd #BerdShit #SmartIsSexy
Dude, Coders are some of the funniest people in the world and they are ever increasing. Always busy planning the next gag or prank that only they can do or think of. This guy is out of the loop when it comes to that, but I enjoyed the rest.
Hacking comedy to death maybe.
ALC, JCL, and COBOL programming for the government....Yeah Mainframe programming....
looks like kanye west before he got his jaw wired
As soon as i saw this guys mom ... I can't take him seriously
Fantastic. How do I become black? ;)
"We would listen to Whoopi Goldberg and Garrison Keillor and Bill Cosby." A simpler time...
This guy's not a comedian, but there may be merit to his social commentary.
Can you imagine a white man saying: "my love of white people"?
You can't huh... it would be an outrage...
baby
It's blatantly racist and extremely ignorant regardless of whether or not people are outraged anyway...
i think nobody would say that because we know we´re doing a fantastic job jerking each other off at every given opportunity. also what brian said.. baby
Chartoise No it wouldn't be... at all
can you imagine if you were treated as a member of an inferior race by people who are able to change laws that affect mostly YOUR people, whom are already viewed? you'd be outraged.... you ought to consider why things are the way they are, question everything.
Hackers ruined USA diplomacy killed in bengazi
Einterteinmemt, dataspy
Safe comedy + them republigans jokes
hack indeed.
I don't understand Somebody explain it to me how comedians actors and people in Hollywood have now become so our God to be listened to about politics? I mean give me a break I mean who are you people and who Do You Think You Are? Today on the beat I heard him say that Trump needs to dismiss Obama no that's the other way around. Obama and the people that support him have to do that to Trump. But it's kind of interesting however after 8 years they have to say vote for me and I'll make it better well why didn't you make it better in those eight years?
That sucked a lot more than I had hoped. When you get way too political and vulgar the talk is ruined.
How to do comedy by someone who nobody has ever heard of...
More accomplished than you, funny guy.
Never heard of Henri-Ansel Vallee... who's that guy?
Henri-Ansel Vallee who are you?
well said. funniest thing about this guy is his cadence
And nobody has heard of you. Surprised!
12:05 Trump 2k16 :P
Sorry. Not feeling you! 9 minutes in. I'm out!
He got basic humor sense. That's why it's not funny. I don't laugh too
Conan O' Brien is 10 time funnier
Lol he thinks TNYT is credible...
I think that in itself was a dig/joke
This was my thought exactly when he said that!
I thought comedy was supposed to be funny...
guess not...
+James McAllen racist
it's hilarious to people who don't rely on sexism, racism, belittlement and dick jokes for their chuckles. I hear there's a new season of Tosh.0 dropping soon.
Kaleb Arvie All this guy did was to rely on racism. EVERY FUCKING JOKE! Can't say too much bad about him thought. He was very honest in his title, it's just too bad he hasn't learned not to hyphenate.
no.. it just wasnt funny... period.
meh
More like a podcast for entertainment than something that will make me a more knowledgeable person. Disappointed.
"And i called it NewsPhlash and it was the 90ies" this guy is not funny at all..
TOTALLY USELESS!!
Interesting talk.well presented except for the use of the 'f-word' that spoiled it for me and my teen daughter(would have wanted to share it with her). really unexpected based on how you started . my wife and i dont swear due to our Christian beliefs. sorry you felt that had to be part of the talk. otherwise a good look at the value of humour which can be ' good medicine'. God bless...
+Anthony Patterson Nothing wrong with swear words... Use logic, words don't hurt unless you let them and he was not even trying to hurt.
sounds to me youre the one spoiling your teen daughter by refusing to expose her to the realities of the world
Anthony Patterson keep your opinion to yourself and don't shame him by saying I'm sorry you felt it was necessary to use that word. People like you really anger me. This is a great video so please loosen up a little bit
Anthony Patterson you sick twisted or delusional if you still believe in God in 2018
