#warhammer40k #miniatures #gamesworkshop - Jak na to + styl
I like how astartes made warhammer animation a thing, and now they are just taking it and banning anyone else from doing anything like it ever again. Reminds me of blizzard and their latest warcraft 3 mod policies.
Screw big companies and their weird lawyering, seriously. Spread space smurf pornography.
The best part of that last statement, is them taking down those videos will raise eyebrows as to how they found it
At least Blizzard had a good reason to get all asshole about mods when they lost a golden goose with DoTA going to Valve.
BIB TIBBY BELDAR BIRLBREND
If it wasn't for Astartes, I wouldn't be into 40K, this is a really dumb move on their part.
They have a legal requirement to police trademarks term or they will loose them. Astartes among others is a trademarked term.
Sucks but reality.\
"Wow, that Astartes animation on youtube got thousands and thousands of people who had never even heard of 40k interested in our products.... we gotta put a stop to that!" - corporate big brain at GW
They didn't put a stop to it. They bought the animations, hired the animators, and built an entire animation department around them. Then they put all the content into their new subscription service, which will cost you as much as supporting even ONE of those animators on Patreon, and get you a whole lot more value. The sheer entitlement at play here would be hilarious if I wasn't experiencing second-hand embarrassment from it. The whole thing is a huge win for everyone involved.
GW could have just brought down the DMCA hammer without talking to these people. They could have hit the channels with copyright strikes and issued cease and desists. All without even talking to the animators. Instead, they licensed the content, gave it official backing, and gave the animators jobs. Not only all of the above, but they're also working on MORE animated content for us to enjoy! But all of that good news gets drowned out by the wailing cries of 'I WANT FREE VIDYAS!'
Grow up.
@@chrisporter4993 I've been playing Nids since 3e. GW sucks.
@@SCHMALLZZZ If GW sucks so much, why have you been playing Nids since 3e? I may not like every decision Gee Dub makes, but if I thought they were corporate evil incarnate I wouldn't bother buying their minis or playing their games.
@@chrisporter4993 EXCEPT multiple animators that decided not to work with GW got taken down anyway. Not to mention the way GW treats smaller studios and animators.
To clarify, it's perfectly fine for animators to work with GW; what is not okay is the fact that people that make these animations as a hobby, without any financial benefit, are basically being forced out of the hobby solely for Games Workshop's financial gain.
I think the funniest outcome that could possibly result from this is if the community as a whole pivoted towards making fan animations based on Tehnolog's Russian-market 40k knock off minis

They are shooting themselves in the foot with this. Some fan movies have brought people into the game. They have also brought former players back.

I have Deen in the game since 87/88. I remember forgeworld being a separate company
Agreed. I'm a former player and only got back into the hobby because of Astartes which blew my mind away. Funny, originally I packed up the hobby some years ago due to their ridiculous price hikes. Considered getting back into it but now after all this I'm just like.... Nahhh!
If fan animations compete against a major corporation without monetary incentive, that corporation deserves to fail.
It happened to Star trek, so they started sueing, created similar, and more strict mandates cause the execs couldn't produce something better than well written films of fans. Very dissapointed
Honestly yeah it really feckin does. They got completely out played but a bunch of randos and couldn't even attempt to fight back. Talk about a salty nerd that got it's butt kicked. I just couldn't help but notice that they went woke and then all of a sudden they started being jerks overall.

The reason that I have 2,000 points of Imperial Guard on my art desk right now after not playing the hobby for ten years is because I saw an animated 40k Series on CZcams and thought, "I'd like to be part of that community again. I think I'll buy some more models and play."

GW, here's the deal: start putting out high quality, fun content that appeals to Warhammer fans so that fans don't feel the need to scratch that itch themselves OR stfu.
Alternatively, they can do with their copyright as they see fit and, if you don't like it, you can stop buying their minis. You're not entitled to free content based on their IP.
@@chrisporter4993 that's a cute take.
@@6Demon6Face6 I could say the same about yours. Except that there's nothing cute about that level of entitlement. GW is a company that markets its IP for a profit. If you don't like how they do business, don't buy their stuff. But they don't owe you free content to scratch any 'itch.'
I certainly don't spend my money on product made by companies I don't support. But then again, I also don't throw temper tantrums in CZcams comment sections those companies will never, ever read.
@@chrisporter4993 your bar for temper tantrum is pretty low bro. I'd hate to see how you treat your kid when they sneeze in a library.
I'm not pretending that they owe me free content. I'm pointing out that they aren't putting out anything worthwhile themselves.
The fan made content is what is helping keep GW alive. They ought to be encouraging it. Randomly seeing "Astartes" is how i even noticed Warhammer at all, it was nothing that GW actually did that grabbed my attention. Sure they can do what they want with their IP (a concept that I think is silly but holds legal weight regardless) but at the end of the day, as you pointed out, if we stop caring, we stop buying. Without the community, it's just over-priced plastic.
@@6Demon6Face6 You're raving in a CZcams comments section demanding that GW do what you want 'or stfu.' Temper tantrum seems fairly appropriate. Especially considering they'll literally never see your comment.
I'm pretty sure what's keeping GW alive is their mini sales. And while I'm not a fan of their pricing scheme, I'm pretty sure it's their sales, not Astartes, earning them record profits. Clearly they value Astartes though, because they bought it. Probably for a great deal more than the animator was getting from his Patreon. They've been trying to market their product lines through animation for a long while, to very little success. Look up the Ultramarines flick sometime; it had a star-studded voice cast and looked like a dumpster fire in spite of all the money they poured into it.
So it's really no surprise that they're buying the quality fan animations, putting some of the animators to work on more projects (y'know, that thing you demanded that they do), and trying to get Warhammer+ off the ground. It's not unreasonable to charge a small sum per month to access the content (and a whole bunch of other hobby related resources), and you'd spend just as much supporting one animator's Patreon every month.
You seem to be under the impression that Games Workshop is at risk of collapsing from the weight of the community's ire at their decision. I assure you, they're not. The level of upset about this decision doesn't even come close to approaching what they dealt with when Age of Sigmar replaced Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Yet, somehow, Games Workshop's doing better than ever. Probably because the overwhelming majority of people who play Warhammer understand that this wasn't just necessary, it was inevitable.
And as far as your thoughts on the concept of IP law... Without trademarks, patents, and copyright law every system of modern economics would collapse under the sheer lack of value as the lowest common denominator in every field rushed to copy the property of any company that put even a little bit of effort into their product. Sweatshop labor would be the standard, as it is in countries like China and India where IP law in other countries is blatantly ignored and illegal bootlegging is rampant. Saying that you think IP law is silly is as blatant a statement of ignorance as anyone could possibly make on the subject.
Imagine having a hive world that gives Imperium the countless regiments of Astra Militarum loyal as Sanguinius and Space Marine recruits without dying during creation at all, so Inquisitor called G.W. declares exterminatus upon this world just because they all don't use Aquilla.
A true grimdark.
I like the idea of the animated Space Marine who is “doing his business” as you say. I think the point it most likely becomes a “film” is when he starts removing his groin guard.
GW comes out with a statement saying they no longer want fans to like their products. Honestly I went back to the hobby jut before the pandemic and everything GW does just makes me want to go into other games and miniatures, fuck these guys, they have no appreciation for their consumers.
Same
I don't buy new anymore. The used, recast, and printed markets are simply too well stocked to give GW any additional money.
Talking about the quality of paintjobs, I have a interesting story about that.
Back in college I would walk past a Games Workshop every week on my way to the lectures. They'd have a little battle scenario in the shop window which would change every so often.
And these models made me stop and look every time. They looked _AMAZING_ . I had to stop and oggle every single time I walked past. But they weren't painted to perfection, far from it. I could see the little mistakes if I stopped to really look at them.
What made them stand out is that they were fully, wholly _done_ . Two small armies, completely painted and based, with some painted terrain. You don't see the small errors, the small spill-over of green onto the red tabard, or the edge highlight being a little thick. You just see a whole bunch of cool painted Warhammer dudes in a cool fight scene.
Moral of the story?
IDK paint your minis or something. Just get them done.
Any paint on a mini is better than the bare grey plastic.
Yes moooooooom
I don't know of any other kind of a company that is now on a monthly basis imposing so many different mandates on their customers.
Apparently, the difference between fan art and fan animation is fps - EonOfBattle: "but how many fps?"
Man, if GW actually cared about their customers, for one, they open their comments sections on youtube...and two they wouldn't of done this.. Also, It's not fan animation, it's just 30/60 seperate fan images played back at 60 fps.
GW: Enthusiasm = Bad, Fans = Bad, Free Advertising = Bad, Customer Relations = Bad.
Also GW: You Love Us, Right? Gimme Money.
They say that they don't want comment sections to derail, and knowing what happens in CZcams and Twitch, I have to give them reason.
Comments sections are overrated tbh
MajorKill's gonna have to update his Patreon to say "Parody" Warhammer Hentai.

GW probably don’t want to be shown up by fan made content lol.
Basically GW is just killing off free advertisement. Show Astartes to a group of people and a good portion would be interested in it enough to invest time to explore the hobby.
Expect GWs new animations to be progressively more corporatised with each new iteration. This could essentially be GW killing the goose that lays golden eggs

It's another example of corporations not understand what "fair use" means.
Fair use means you’re free to use their IP. This policy is for when Fair Use doesn’t apply
We need Legal Eagle to talk about this! 😁
That guy is complete idiot. Sure we can ask legal beagle to weigh and he would just side with GW the bootlicking idiot.
You wouldn't like the result. GW is absolutely within their legal rights here. Not only that, the fans don't look so good if you remember that GW didn't need to buy the animations, hire the animators, build a department for them, and give them an official means of producing content while getting paid. They could just have fired the DMCA cannon from orbit, burned it all to the ground, and called it a day.
But because fans have to pay the same amount of money they would have otherwise by supporting even one of the animators on their Patreon, everyone acts like GW is committing a warcrime by protecting their copyright.
@@chrisporter4993 Oh, I completely understand that GW is legally within their rights, unfortunately. But it would be interesting to hear him explain it more fully.
So is GW going to raid all sources of rule34 of their IP? Good luck to them.
Your paint jobs are just getting better and better. Great to see the progression!
Your smirk as you work up to pictogram idea cracked me up hahaha
They can't do that actually. They can only stop you from making money off of their IP, but not from making and sharing it.
i see what u did there ;-)
Take a look at what Paramount did back in 2000, when they served Cease and Desist letters to the fan websites. It blew up in there faces. Then Paramount went after the fan films a year or two ago to shut down the Kickstarter that was making better movies than they were.
I remember about ten years ago everyone at ORGINS laughing when GW sent out letters to other mini companies demanding that they all stop producing all bits immediately because someone **might** use them on their minis.
In short, this is what happens when you have a publicly-trade company that answers to stockholders. They get stupid.
It seems to me like the GW lawyers realized they have an animation branch now. Since that means that they can make money from it now, in their minds fan films are taking their money.
Honestly I'd be ok with his if it wasn't for the fact they literally threatened animators with "join us or get sued" and *completely* illegalized fan animations, profited from or not, just so they can be the only ones allowed to produce them *and* have them at a price,it's super scummy

When I go thru my son's LEGOs now to build something I look for 2x3 bricks and can't find any.
The last line of the fan art can be interpreted as "no memes making fun of GW" which is absolutely terrifying.
My biggest concern with this is for Bruva Alfabusa and his TTS series. Even though the series would be protected under parody and satire, they heavily use artword, images, graphics etc that belong to GW. So they essentially have two strikes against them for gw to go after them and only one of them they can claim fair use on. 😕
I'm really just hoping that they don't consider TTS as a fan animation at this point. also I find it hard to believe that no one at games workshop has seen TTS before, if they wanted it taken down we would probably know by now... Or atleast i hope :(

On the painting thing:
Back in the day when GW had a sense of humour and the minis only cost an arm, painting was a cinch. For the bulk, simple base colour schemes, a wash and a quick dry brush would suffice. It was only your characters and heroes that got the attention and detail (and took a lot of skill. Remember, back then there was a very limited choice of paints and you had to mix the different shades yourself). Now everything seems to require Golden Demon standard painting. The detail on new models, even the basic core minis, is incredibly fine. They look great
but blimey they don't half take a while to paint. For beginners or someone with not a lot of time on their hands, the prospect of painting even one unit to a reasonable standard can be very overwhelming or daunting. Not only that, they very expensive, sometimes pretty complicated to put together and you always end up with half a box of spare bits you will probably never use.
That's modern times I suppose but I am old and dream of simpler times. Not better, just simpler.
I couldn't agree more when you were talking about paint jobs capturing the essence of the mini regardless of the quality of the painting itself! It's all about finding that vibe in what you want to create, rather than getting stuck in details that don't really matter. Great video!
Love your DUNE "salute" 5:17 LOL
Lego and 40k... that is a dangerous combination...
Jay, copyright laws - and specifically permissible use of copyrighted material without permission - can vary from country to country. The US "fair use" and British "fair dealings" rules, for example, are different standards. So, GW, is probably hoping fan comply so that they don't end up bogged down in court cases.
They don't have a negative for bogging down. British civil court used to be free for the filer, might still be, and us fees aren't enough to stop a corporation with a legal department. They'll harass a few people into oblivion, just like Chapterhouse, and use that fear to control other content makers.
So are you telling me my stop motion fan film of space marines vs legos with 9k cgi explosions and fx special effects made with my mouth which i been working 3 years now....
Its a copyright infringement
I suppouse then my dream of surpass astartes its coming to an abruptly end.

This just in, you are only legally allowed to paint your minis to box art colors, all rule breaker will be shot
It’s time for GW to get a fucking calendar so they get what year it is, and it’s time for GWs customers to print their own models and make their own law!
There's a theory that some GW executive or even the CEO is jealous that fan made animations are better than their official ones, and decided to either buy them all up, or kill the ones that weren't for sale, and I'm inclined to believe that.
I feel like warhammer+ is just GW's way of trying to make it so that they can say that if you want the best warhammer content, you can find it on their platform, rather than on youtube, it could easily be as petty a reason as that.
Why is that a petty reason? It’s a business decision. Keeping everything in house means they have more control over the quality of the production and keeping it in-line with their ‘vision’ of the Warhammer universe.
At the end of the day, it’s their product and can take it in any direction they see fit. Where just consumers

GW, like any business, does not want people to profit off of their IP. Uploading it to CZcams or wherever immediately creates a problem where the creator can start to earn revenue based on views.
And who knows, maybe warhammer+ will have a fans section where said videos can live (and be vetted)
Getting in arms get nowhere. Not buying ANY of their models is the only viable answer. I for quite some time stopped buying ANYTHING that has their brand, including video games

What if i get some voice actors to narrate a stop motion battle report? Or it just photo and pan over the table with sound effects, BGM and voice overs?
technically this would fall under trademark laws not copyright laws so it's a bit different (and yes there is a difference). big thing is no they did not have to go about it this way to protect their trademark and IP, and this may not be enforceable depending on the country. also please do the lego army that is awesome.
To protest games workshop I vote we all board the GW frigate in the harbor and toss all the washes into the sea!
a true patriot and hobbiest!
Lol I'm getting 3rd party and recasts in protest.
@@pyraastarte9609 get some “things are going to be loud now” marines. Not noise Marines.
If battle report mention nerative or stop motive scene will that consider fan film too?
Tonnes of these releases have no legal backing. In a lot of countries you can just do whatever you want.
cant wait for the lego 40k army vids
I walked away from GW 12 years ago. I'm happier for it, as there are so many other better games. I do miss the Chaos Gods but that's about it. I do like the neon elf paint job.
I am pretty sure the lawyers at games workshop are always looking for something to do.
Oh boy. This did not work out for them last time they tried something this draconian. Never forget that they lost 2/3rd of their claims in the Chapter House case.
I expect this level of shit from the old CEO, Tom "We're a model company and don't do market research" Kirby, but Kevin Rountree was doing such great work turning the company around and rebuilding goodwill with customers... then the last two years, shit like this starts happening under his reign.
TTS is not exempt due to:
Fan-films and animations - individuals must not create fan films or animations based on our settings and characters. These are only to be created under licence from Games Workshop.
Under "Infringements" of their Ip Guidelines
Just because it's on their website doesn't change fair use including parody. Unless someone has signed a contract with GW they don't get to dictate what they law is, only what their actions are within it. They could always have gone after fan films.
Made some lego modular terrain to fill the battlefield
Your Idea with Lego just saved my ass from so much truble (I aranged a smal fun Test Game in 2 Weeks and would Need to make multiple big Terain pices, as I do Not have nearly enougth)
@@brothercaptainaurelian1386 glad to hear lol. I had a bunch laying around so made a modular watchtower that splits floors, large functional objectives, scatter terrain and shipping containers to fill a kill team board. Good luck!
I went to a game store the other day. I won't say which one- I went upstairs and to my horror people were brazenly abusing GW's IP - Right Out in the OPEN! -- they were running around the tables, holding tape measures and rolling dice. I never thought this was possible, but it appeared the Space Marines were winning. All the while the players were laughing, having a good time, talking trash and showing no regard for GW's latest update to their IP guidelines at all. The horror!. The horror
I keep telling you: GW hates its customers while the customers love being the sub in their abusive relationship. Never give GW money. Never.
The community told GW they'd just start 3d printing pieces because GW is too expensive: GW cracks down hard on unofficial GW parts and models.
The community tells GW they don't want to pay for a subscription service and they can find plenty of content for free: Now no one can make content except GW.
The community really needs to stop giving them ideas lmfao
Would love to see a Lego Battle Report!
