Different judges have different approaches that are shaped by their own personalities and what works for them. Some judges play them soft and sweet to defeat the oppositionalism, and maintain their control over the proceedings that way in a kind of judo. (Judge Boyd does this like an absolute Queen.) Others, like Judge Oakley, go with a harder-edged approach.
It's not so different to staff in an inpatient psych unit (which I've been); they all develop their own individual styles of managing patients with time and experience.
But it does take time and experience. I can well understand that a pro tem judge hasn't yet developed an effective working strategy for handling these particularly difficult defendants.
