If you have time I would strongly suggest watching the official music video for this song before you watch the history. The official music video is powerful and shows an important side of his life that the History episode doesn't cover.
He definitely should. That one is deep.
Much of the lyrics are actually Audie Murphys own words, written in his book called....To hell and back, that is a biography written -49 and depicts Murphys experience as a soldier in WWII. The book later became a film and Murphy himself played in it.
Murphy became one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II. He received every military combat award for valor available from the United States Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism.
After the war Murphy suffered hard from PTSD, and you are right about connecting the line the are still there when I sleep with just that. He became highly addicted to drugs and after a while he locked himself in a hotel room while detoxing hiself.
Sidenote...Have you done The price of a mile and Angels Calling yet? Otherwise I think you will love them both. So powerful!
Concerning Angels Calling, I think you will love the video ft Apocalyptica...just saying!😉
Second that
Price of a Mile he reacted 2 months ago. Angels calling not yet 😉
Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and
listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war where hell is
six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh
how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is
six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod that
rich with blood does seep.
With yours and mine, like butchered
swine's; and hell is six feet deep.
That death awaits there's no debate;
no triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is
six feet deep.
- Audie Murphy, 1948
If you are ever in Greenville, TX you need to stop at the Audie Murphy museum. Also Audie played himself in the movie "To Hell and Back.
Hello from Sweden! Soon Sabaton will start their Sweden tour 27/1, Hulkoff will be the opening band, so I think you should listen to one of their songs with Joakim on the chorus. Hulkoff - Ibor & Aio feat. Jocke Brodén (Official Audio)
I love your focus at the lyrics. I love bands with good lyrics, like Sabaton and Avenged Sevenfold. The lyrics in the Sabaton songs The Final Solution, The Price of a Mile, and Hearts of Iron, hit me right in my heart.
You have to watch the offical MV. It explains alot of what Audie went through.
Definitely watch the actual music video for this one.... it's so much more powerful.
Both Joakim and Pär wrote this one. Trauma is hard to get out of a brain, even people who research on the brain is sometime perplexed about this organ. Too this day our brain is a mystery and back then it is not strange that they didn't get the help they needed.
Audie Murphy should get writing credit since most of the chorus comes from a poem he wrote, "Crosses grow on Anzio."
To Hell and Back was Murphy's autobiography that was made into a movie that he starred in.
Yeah, wrong vid. The official music video is the one. 🤔
should have done the official music video much more powerful
