Gangl have some streets and places name in his honor in Austria as result of this fight, hes a hero there.
Funnily enough this leaves out another important (and equally unexpected) event during the battle. At some point after the castle's telephone was knocked out, Lee decided they needed to send another request for assistance because he hadn't managed to describe what opposition they were facing before the phone line was knocked out (which was vital if he wanted to get *appropriate* reinforcements to deal with the situation). One of the prisoners, a French tennis star named Jean Borotra, volunteered to serve as a runner and go on foot to get help.
So, while the battle was going on, you had a pro tennis player climb over the castle walls and take off on foot, dodging SS patrols and ambush positions all along the way in what basically amounted to a marathon run through enemy territory. He managed to find the 142nd Infantry Regiment and relayed everything Lee had asked of him, then asked for a uniform and a weapon so he could go back to the castle and continue fighting. They agreed to the request (presumably because he knew the route and where at least some of the enemy positions were on the way there, but I'd like to think it was also because the Americans couldn't help but be impressed by a civilian who wanted to charge back into the same fighting he'd just escaped from to reach them), so after someone managed to locate a spare uniform he went right back to the castle along with the reinforcements they so desperately needed.
It is truly fascinating that they could find the trust in each other before and band together and go save the prisoners and the castle. Love the look on your face when Indy describes the strange that is this story and I like how you directly goes too a priest and a rabbit joke.

the part about Japanese and British soldiers fighting together is actually quite interesting if you ever get a chance to read about it, a guy called the history chap talks about it on youtube.
it ends up being french, Indian, and Japanese troops fighting under a British officer against other Japanese and the Vietnamese communists (the same communists america fought), and if i remember correctly theres a couple opportunities in it where if things went a different way the American/Vietnam war may have never happened.
