I was an emt for many years, spasms after death are in fact very common. The defense was right on the possibility of the guy firing 3 shots, absolutely. The jurors seem pretty stupid.
I smell a rat with this Judge, how is this even legal? If I were a juror I would feel used as well. 😮 How many shots can a dead man let off? 🤔

The explanation by the defense expert, about how it could've happen, is plausible. Reasonable doubt.
Still doesn't make her the killer. So what if it was 10 shots, there is no evidence tied to her. No residue, divorce, family disputes....nothing.
With a revolver also. So the theory that the gun went off 2 more times doesn't make sense. U have to pull the hammer back to shot again.

What did Raynella know about this judge? This was a well connected woman who knew all the important legal players in the county, so it’s not unreasonable to think she would have known a few dirty little secrets. And given her character, it seems obvious she’d use them.

I liked it when Erin accused the judge of granting motion to dismiss just to "end the case", and the judge simply said "yes, that's exactly why I did it"

The judge said the State didn't prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. That sounds like a Judge that knows the law - proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The jurors we saw weren't basing their conclusion on any solid proof , only emotion.

Plus I’ve seen WAY too many guns misfire. Even a dropped bullet can go off. So I don’t believe the state theory at all.

@arimax3216, that was the last time for the judge to preside over a case, he retired. He said it himself that it was the last case for him as he was retiring.

The UK documentaries are the very best of the best. But 48 hours is really good too. Especially for American standards, very sensationalistic and repetitive
This stage show wasn't just about a black widow that needed to do some serious prison time, it was also about a judge that should have seen the inside of a jail cell himself.

I had no idea a judge could step in and make the decision and totally disregard the jury! I do not like that this judge did that.
It rarely happens but it does happen.

It absolutely can happen. A Judge is the one that makes all the determinations before the jury is charged with making a decision. He knows the law better than anyone. He said the State didn't prove their case. This is a prime example of the legal system working and why it's important for the prosecutors to have undeniable evidence.

His explanation makes no sense. Or if it does it would apply to a whole lot more cases.
He says he is worried the jury would convict on emotions.
Both sides had the opportunity to play on emotion. The judge had opportunity to instruct jury what to consider and what not, and to warn the jury not to vote based on emotion.
There are many innocent people in jail who wish they had a judge who did their duty like this one did.
Better to potentially free guilty people than to risk jailing innocent people. The state did not fulfill their duty, and the jury members then proved that they were making emotional decisions, proving the judge correct.
Prosecutors love to manipulate juries, knowing they are human creatures, as easily manipulated as all of us (despite what some of us like to think about ourselves). It's honestly disgusting how easy it is to put innocent people behind bars.
See what a judge can do? Imagine the injustice that has and will continue with those leches in the Supreme Court.

Despite murderers saying their significant other committed suicide while laying down, appearing to just be sleeping in their own bed....I have never seen it be proven of anyone committing suicide with a gun whilst laying down as tho they were simply sleeping like any other night. On their stomachs or back. It just seems like a weird way to be positioned when about to unalive yourself. I don't think that person will be so relaxed and laying down, in any way, if using a gun to the temple.
The judge was within his purview in granting the defenses motion and I believe he was correct in so doing. The judge did not “steal” anything! Moreover, judging by the comments of those jurors I am extremely relieved they were not able to cast their judgment on the defendant. Their wholly conclusory analysis was hopelessly flawed overly simplified and erroneous.
I can’t believe she got away with it! What a sad injustice to her husband’s and their families.

They used the law in order to get her off but her reputation as a black widow cold hearted selfish narcissist has been exposed and you can't erase anyone's opinion in this case I'll can only guess her books will suffer as well. I mean a witness said she used a towel to hide evidence of gunpowder residue no telling if she wore a hazmat suit in order to hide the residue from her clothing. Besides I heard a tip from some hitmen use's as a way to ride oneself of the residue but I'm not going to list I here in order to prevent any future chance of someone else trying it.

That now ALL of her husbands have died under suspicious circumstances is most certainly relevant to this case. But the jury isn’t allowed to know about the others, that’s insane.
It’s the price we pay for trying to have cases tried on the merits of the case itself instead of someone’s past. Although rare, I promise you there are people out there with 2 or 3 spouses that died under what can be described as suspicious circumstances but that had nothing to do with their deaths - our Justice system is designed to protect the innocent which sometimes means letting a guilty person go free.

The judge says she has an alibi but he also says they couldn't prove time of death. So he contradicts himself.

The fact that the prosecution can’t establish the time of death is the very reason their case was weak. That was the point. She’s not guilty simply because the judge prosecution never proved she was.

It's not a contradiction it's 2 different facts, she was known to be out and he couldn't be proved to have died at a specific time where she was home. Unless you can prove someone died like 3 hours before the suspect was out creating an alibi then you can't prove anything. I don't think the judge was saying she's innocent or guilty honestly, I believe he was saying there isn't enough evidence to prove she's guilty. In the uk police have to put forward their case to the crown prosecution service who decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial. They are similar to the DA in that way except they aren't elected or appointed, they are people who applied for the role and have a country wide framework of what to consider. No political agenda can sway it. No emotion, just does this meet the criteria for being prosecuted, is there enough evidence to support the trial ect.

That was shocking. I didnt expect the "judge" to be the judge of what she did. Thats what the jury is supposed to be for. But if the jury should be allowed to have all the information about the case.. NO evidence to defend or condemn the person on trial should be withheld ever. And far too many defendants have had evidence to exonerate them withheld from the trial .
This is so true. In the case of my son there is a public defender who knows of the truth and refuses to come forward and instead allows my son to sit in jail for three-and-a-half years for something that he did not do.

No, he saw that the State had NO EVIDENCE. The Corner jump the gun too. His death should have been ruled Inconclusive. There are way too many holes to pin on anyone. No gunshot residue on her person nor clothing. Where is the evidence linking her to the death? The evidence at hand does not show that she was the person who pulled the trigger. Find the person who has the gun shot residue. Did that corner test the victims hand for gun shot residue. Too many holes to lock someone up for the rest of their life. The Judge did the absolute right decision. Not Guilty!

No one wants to believe their loved one was capable of suicide. I definitely have doubts about her innocence but with the little snippets presented here, there was definitely reasonable doubt.
Those jurors explaining why they'd vote guilty prove EXACTLY why everyone should be terrified to have your life in their hands. One of them says "guilty" because he disagrees with PROVEN MEDICAL SCIENCE. The other says "guilty" because the lawyer acted out a dumb speech. Pathetic. Thank god they didn't get to vote.
I actually agree. From a legal standpoint, the judges decision is sound.
A district attorney has to be reasonably convinced of the evidence before hand because they don't want it to be thrown out. At a pretrial hearing, a judge has to agree there's enough evidence the defendant should go to trial. So right there, enough prominent people thought it was reasonable enough to go to a jury trial.

She is well known by the police so this whole trial was one big joke, except the prosecutor who did an excellent job.
That judge had NO RIGHT to dismiss the case. The majority of judges have never had their own lives at stake and in the hands of someone with power. I wish they AND the majority of these defense attorneys, (who full-well know their clients are GUILTY), get a big dose of their hypocrisy and lies. They all make me sick and angry.

Unfortunately he does have the ‘right’. However the fact he probably wasn’t ‘right’ in doing what he did a killer is free. He almost says as much at the end…
Having dealt with a close family member that was dealing with the same thing as her second husband, I do see where the defenses explanation is very plausible with the gun shots. If you don't have experience with mental health/brain diseases/death with them and neurological problems you wouldn't understand it. It was my dad and I saw not only his irritation dealing with it but other people in the facility he was getting help at. I heard several times what they said as well as my dad. "I'm useless, why am I even here." I would assure dad we needed him and give him examples. I also dealt with PTSD from WWII. Extremities (head, arms, hands, legs, feet) just spasm or move on their own. I myself have neurological problems with my hand. It will spasm and double do whatever I am doing. It's slight and just an aggravation for now. Like typing this I have to proof read and correct what my fingers double type and if I use the mouse my middle finger will spasm and click the mouse button. Sometimes the mouse flies to a different area altogether. My wrist will just have a weird flick to the right once in a while. Thankfully, the doctor does know why but I won't have the surgery until it gets worse. Other than that I would have to hear the entire case to base an opinion. I am in middle Tennessee and we didn't hear much about this case back then. I saw no hard evidence, nothing that showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that she did it. Just circumstantial that might implicate her guilt, but it certainly doesn't prove her guilty.
Great story but if you want to die, you use the hand you normally use to make it a speedy death. Not shoot with a hand you don't normally use.

There had to be something more going on here. This judge was retiring and won't be held accountable. It's hard to believe someone could be a judge so long could be so stupid. He probably wasn't stupid but he probably isn't honest.
