  • "There's nothing like experiencing America's most powerful, streamlined steam locomotive thundering across her old stomping grounds to add to the excitement and celebration of our country's most patriotic day..."
    During the Fourth of July weekend, Norfolk Southern ran a series of excursions out of Roanoke, Virginia as part of their 21st Century Steam Program. The motive power for these trips was none other than Norfolk and Western class J #611; fresh from her year-long restoration and operating out of her hometown for the first time since 1994!
    In this video, we see the J tackle the Christiansburg grade towards Radford with the afternoon Pelican excursion unassisted.
    Special thank you to the Fire Up 611 Campaign, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corp, and all who've donated both time and resources for making this possible. For more information on continuous support for the Norfolk and Western 611, visit: fireup611.org/
    Also a big thanks to Christopher Kovacs.

      HughFromAlice Indeed, we were very impress with the 611's performance that weekend.

  • @j.christopherlindsey8933

    Ahh, love it. Even to this day she shows that she is one of the best "northerns" ever built. Though I have seen recent videos where she has struggled (on rail that could make anything struggle), she still manages to make pulling this consist seem like it isn't there. Forget a diesel for HEP, dynamic braking or assistance, let 611 run... she shows she can do it.

      Chris Lindsey From our understanding, the Friday trips had scattered thunderstorms with some downpour here and there. Hence why there are videos of 611 struggling to get the train going to Radford; wet rails and steep grades don't mix. Even so, she did not stall and carried on with no troubles throughout the entire weekend. Impressive, isn't it?

      @j.christopherlindsey8933 Před 9 lety

      Midwest Zephyr Media Definitely. Somebody had uploaded a video at Blue Ridge where she slipped a few times on wet rail but never stopped. I imagine back in the day (before all the regulations) she would've hit that grade with a full head of steam and never thought twice about it.

    That's Awesome They Need to More Trips Like this. But they Need to Oprate The Train Correctly

    Shame a private excursion service like Iowa Pacific doesn't recreate the entire Pelican route and "rent" 611 to haul it.

    The LAST mass produced steam Locomotive built in the US and the most POWERFUL.
    Never try to tell me that these things are NOT living, Breathing animals, like us. They need to drink water and eat coal to run, they need TLC after every run, they need someone to oil specific areas of the drive train (Legs) to function properly.
    They Breath and pant going up hill. Once they get going they continue with ease down the line, just like a human.
    Listen to the whistle as the train approaches various stops. You HEAR and see the evidence of the train before it comes fully into view. You hear that ROARING whistle and see the sky darken with the smoke.
    It is like some gigantic pre-historic creature is Approaching. WATCH particularly the trains first approach to Christiansburg; AWE INSPIRING. The “Whistle” is more like the roar of a dinosaur.
    I especially love the headlight and red strip down the side of the locomotive and the tender. What STYLE!!!!!

  • @trainfansgamingchannel2778

    anyone else notice the tree branch on the Auxiliary Water Tender in the last two or three shots?

    When will NS do N&W 1218?

    • @09JDCTrainMan
      @09JDCTrainMan Před 9 lety

      They probably won't unfortunately, the 1218 has too many parts missing from the unfinished overhaul in the early 90s, but I myself would more than love to see 1218 under steam again.

      +Mr. Railfanner an unofficial "Fire Up 1218" has been created, and there is good support for this group and for 1218's restoration, but 1218 needs a major overhaul it will ever steam again.

    • @likoni02
      @likoni02 Před 6 lety

      I understand that a N&W class J recorded the highest piston speed for a reciprocating steam locomotive (I forget the figure.) The speed at the time was 110 MPH.
