The weekend of April 9th and 10th saw the first excursions Norfolk & Western 611 had pulled in over 2 decades, with the beautiful J Class 4-8-4 pulling a 22 car train to the cities of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Asheville, North Carolina, respectively. See the Queen of Steam fly through small towns, blast through the countryside, and conquer the Southern Loops! This beginning to the 2016 excursion season for the 611 truly was an experience to behold, and could not be done without the fantastic organization and planning done by Norfolk Southern, Fire Up 611!, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the crews of the 611, and all other contributors to the consist. So now, please enjoy this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on April 9th and 10th, 2016.

It brings back memories for THIS old railroad man, seeing that Southern Green 'n Gold. It was to the Southern that I hired all those many years ago as an extra yard laborer. Before I knew it I was a clerk and a Train Order Operator handing up orders to trains, setting them out for the Southern Crescent and, yes, the steam excursions like this one. I got to ride the cabs of the E8's and the F7 that's on this train, sometimes deadheading to assignments on engines, I rode cabs of steam engines (611 included). So this has meaning to an old retired RR guy! Especially those green engines where I knew most of the engineers on the Piedmont Division, including a good friend, George Ambrose, engineer on Southern trains 1 & 2, Amtrak 820 & 819. What a wonderful character he was, too! :) Seems so long, long ago now.........................................................................

Lmao, you can see DIB's cameras on the 611. Don't get me wrong because I do love love love the way guys like DIB are pioneering new styles of rail fanning videos but I also appreciate and love rail videos shot in the traditional style like this. To do it right, like this one has been, is really an art form. Amazing video buddy. Beautifully shot, it's a real work of art in my opinion. Keep it up.

Brilliant locomotive, really interesting assortment of coaches (or do you call them cars?). Shame that they have to have the two ugly diesels on the train. Love the sound of steam and that deep throated steam whistle. Nice video.

@@azaabazha OK. Bur I think that any diesel should not be on a steam train as they detract from the magic of steam. Steam engines managed to pull trains for decades without diesels, so I prefer them to carry on solo.
