Norfolk & Western 611: Memories of the Mainline (BCP Memories)

The Norfolk & Western J Class 4-8-4s have been notorious for being amongst the most reputable classes of passenger steam locomotives in American history. With smaller drivers for climbing and precise counterbalancing for high speed running, the Js proved their worth as some of the best engines to come out of Roanoke Shops. The only survivor, number 611, has continued this tradition in the way of being one of the finest engines in excursion service, restored back to operation in 2015 to participate in Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam program. Unfortunately, the same year that it came back to operation proved to be the last year of the program, which left a sense of uncertainty as to what would happen to the newly restored J. But thankfully, it went on to pull two more years of spring long distance excursions in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. This video consists of six chapters that highlight both the 2016 and 2017 mainline excursion seasons throughout the states of Virginia and North Carolina, providing for a truly entertaining experience of 611 on the mainline! Many of these clips have been remastered, and even a few new clips have been included from these excursions. Now, please enjoy this compilation of the Queen of Steam doing what she does best, in this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed in spring of 2016 and 2017.
Fun fact from me: In both April 2016 and April 2017, me and my dad rode behind 611 on the following two trips:
2016: The Blue Ridge Special from Spencer to Asheville, North Carolina and return on April 10th
2017: The Roanoker from Greensboro, North Carolina to Roanoke, Virginia and return on April 22nd
The reason why for those two is because of the following:
The Blue Ridge Special: Getting that chance to ride over the Old Fort Loops :3
The Roanoker: Getting the chance to ride behind 611 with no diesel helpers at all! :D
I remember seeing both N&W 611 and NKP 765 4 times as well as once with NH&I 40, SP 4449, PM 1225, R&N 425, Southern 630, Little River Railroad 110 and New Haven 3025 as well as Valley Railroad 40 2 times, and many times with Strasburg Railroad 89, 90 & 475 and the real Thomas in Strasburg, New Hope Valley 17 and Flagg Coal 75 and a lot of times in my life that I will never forget.

I was a car host many a time on those trips they were brutal but they were so much fun
In case you were wondering I worked on the Franklin Inn on the cavalier trips & the Louisiana on the Powhatan Arrow & Pelican trips

Fantastic video once again Chad! Hopefully someday she’ll return to the mainline. 10MPH on a 4 miles tourist railroad just isn’t the same as 50MPH on an all day excursion

Well atm its still st Strasburg with no sign of when it's leaving nor its future of where it'll run next as I still have my doubts 611 will be running on the mainline in the future and only for ferry moves as ive yet vmt doesn't want to get ptc and they even passed down a free one from the friends of 261.

It’s a shame these excursions didn’t last long since 611 can’t do these runs anymore due to the new policies of mainline excursions and since vmt doesn’t want to give the engine ptc.
Not sure where you heard that about vmt not wanting to get ptc for it. Even if they got PTC for it the way NS is managed now they'd never touch it aside from ferry moves with a heafty price tag. The less they deal with NS these days the better in my opinion.

i have the bachmann spectrum number 608 j class ho scale model train. i had to replace the motor and she runs like a bat out of hell now. named it after my dad because the model has been through hell just like my father. ironically i named the model after my dad before i knew number 611 and my dad are the same age.73 years old.
Ah yes, the Queen of Steam herself! However, it’s a shame we won’t see her on the mainline again. No matter, at least she’s still in steam and hauling trains, on the Strasburg Railroad no less! So that’s a good thing.

Unfortunately we will never see this again. Even if 611 gets PTC, NS won’t carry the insurance required to run excursions.
