Thanks Phil. Keeping a close eye on it. Noticed one of the fish flashing yesterday morning, but nothing since. I'll scrape again if I see any more, but I'd be hopeful that the two treatments of F&M solved it.
the mbbr is releasing dead bacteria as a sludge back to the pond, because your filter only mechanic and bio, you need a polishing filter to make your water clarity constant .
It's a fairly common issue with the silicone seals on those queni drums and others too (I have the QK25) I've replaced the seal on mine after just 9 months from new as it can harden and even start cracking with chemical pond treatments and UV light. This causes it to lose the spring rubber tension against the inside of the drum, creating a slight gap. Which water can push through, especially if the screen hasn't been cleaned for a while and has a bio film on it restricting flow. I did a modification to my DVS amalgam to reflect UV light away from the seal.
Cheers, I'll take a look at them again. I did give them a quick look and they're still soft. My UV goes in just under the waste chute and into the centre of the drum so they're right in the line of fire.
@@DublinKoiPond It might be a bit difficult to see where the gap is, as it is very small but that was exactly how the dirt bypassed my drum and got into the bio 🙂 It's not that they go stiff, the one I replaced was still soft. They just lose their elasticity and should spring strongly against the inside edge of the drum. But when they harden they go eliptical in shape and the uneven pressure creates a gap. The other problem was the amalgam, the UV light will break down the silicone of the drum seal, but also the the plastic of the drum screen support, if you place it inside the drum. the seal is pretty cheap to replace about £50 iirc, the drum screen though is not cheap, it's hundreds of pounds... Thats why DVS reccomend to put it in the dirty side of the filter. 🙂
@@DavesKoiPond Thanks Dave. Had a close look this morning and can see water flowing past one of the seals. I’m checking with DVS as to availability. They’re not easy to get at on the CL35. Access is pretty limited at that end of my set up. It looks like the waste chute has to come out. I’m also going to move the UV back to the dirty side. Just have to figure out how I blank the hole that I drilled for it. Ken
Costia lives on fish and in general isnt a problem . However adding fish to a pond is a stress event that can weaken the immune system giving the costia a chance to take over and outbreak .. its not actually the fish you introduce but the effect they have on the eco system
Cheers, yes, read that it's normally there, but not an issue. I wonder how much the relatively sudden increase in pond temperature has to do with it? Seems to be lots of it amongst the community in Ireland at the minute.
The right hand side of the waste chute between the drum and the firewall seems to be open to the clean water side could the food possibly be overflowing into the clean side ?
Didn't think of that. I'll keep an eye. However, filter is running over 2 years and it's the first time I noticed this issue. I seriously expected to find a hole in the drum screen.
@@skeggy No mate, the opposite. Never found the source of the leak but realised if I dropped the water level by a couple of CM it stopped. So water level is no slightly lower than it was.
It may just be that the intensity of the sunlight is giving you the appearance that your water is cloudier than it actually is. I supposed you would be able to tell if it seemed to clear up as the sun dropped down?
Pretty sure it was the water clarity. Wasn't helped by the fact the UV was off for ten days for the costia treatment. See the latest video where there is a big improvement. I think a few duller days also helped. The amount of sunshine in the last couple of weeks is unreal.
Hi Mate. You could try a wind sail to keep the sun off, that would help with the green water and stop the fish from getting sunburn .And the water Lilies need planting into bigger baskets. They would grow like wild fire. Do you use Aquatic soil?
To answer your second question, yes we did use aquatic soil. I thought the baskets were big enough, but will take a look for something bigger. I'm wondering if the F&M treatment for the costia knocked them back a bit.
Thanks for letting me know. Just had a listen back and it sounds fine for me. I've got into the habit of turning off the air and shower when I'm in the filter house as that causes a lot of background noise. Interested to hear if anyone else has problems hearing.
Interesting update👍. Never a pleasant experience when you find costia but 🤞 you’ll eradicate it😊👍

When my water goes a bit green I put in two scopes of clover blanket weed treatment and it sends it clear 😊

Hope the koi are on the mend and youve sorted the parasites 👍

I need to do something. The amount of sun we've been getting over the last couple of weeks is pretty unprecedented - in Ireland anyway!
To answer your second question, yes we did use aquatic soil. I thought the baskets were big enough, but will take a look for something bigger. I'm wondering if the F&M treatment for the costia knocked them back a bit.
Hi Mate.Yeah the bigger the baskets the bigger the roots will grow. Better pads and flowers.
Is it just me? I can hardly understand a word he’s saying.

Nope, it's just you my friend,
Clean your ears out. Its called an irish accent. Thats all. Im english. Understood everything perfectly.
