  • I actually have a theory: All but finitely many of UC matches have at least a student studying maths. Today's match is an exceptionally good example. The team from Emmanuel is comprised of 2 maths, 1 physics, and 1 history students, at last something I could approve. Their opponent from Nottingham University is quite alright, except the guy with annoying smile. Quite fun match. Original air date 15.8.2016

      @@retterkl You are right, I thought the same. Now, I'm from Costa Rica, and the only name we use here for those fish is Betta, so I thought maybe in UK they don't use it at all. The guy who answered is Canadian, so I'm guessing that's why he just answered Betta. But if Betta is also colloquial in UK, then the question may have not been phrased in the best way

    Thanks for posting! Great match!! Sad that Cowan didn't get credit for a correct answer: he answered "Betta" but Paxman said no and that the "correct" answer was "Siamese Fighting Fish". However they are synonymous. I kept waiting in vain for Paxman or the producers to rectify their mistake. For shame, UC.

      This question occurs often. From the Net: 'If you wanted to use the word "reading", the proper usage would be "I am reading for a degree in X." This is not limited to social sciences; it would apply to any degree. However, this has become something of an old-fashioned expression; it's far more common to say that you are "studying X" or "doing a degree in X'. Perhaps it's less old-fashioned than it is British English.

  • @thecanonjournoongoogle
    @thecanonjournoongoogle Před 8 lety +7

    +psimanjuntak You have to have plenty of maths/science students- there's just such a high component of those kinds of questions- particularly as starters. Although from my observations, this series has also included plenty of humanities-type bonuses in this first round so far so if it's any indication, these teams will need to brush up on an atlas.

    • @yaorito1
      @yaorito1  Před 8 lety +3

      A well-read humanities student is always better, tbh. What's more interesting is that with 28 teams (so 224 students), the lower bound of maths student is 14/224 = 6%, with 14 from each of the preliminary rounds. Usually it's about 10% (so 1 in 8, roughly). Considering that the proportion of maths student is somewhere around 2% in the UK (and slightly below that in the States), this is quite astounding. Of course, the two series ago when they had some specialist schools (LSHTM, anyone) is an abberation, but the result still stands. I for one am particularly happy about this, considering that the absolute number of maths graduate, especially in US, has gone down, even when you take into account those moving to CompSci study. For once, the stereotype might be positive.

    • @rj82330
      @rj82330 Před 8 lety

      +psimanjuntak I think you're double counting there. 28 teams is 112 teams (14 matches not 28). So that brings your proportions up to 12%, or your traditional 1 in 8

    • @rj82330

      Ah yes, thank you. In any case, they're still over-represented in this programme. Of course, this show has left almost completely the growing number of 'business' students (questionable category for in many cases questionable students, imho). So maybe, if you count such students out completely, the 12% number might be more in line with their proportion.
