What better way to wrap my head around turning 50 years old than a week of solo canoe tripping in Algonquin Provincial Park!
Warm sunny days and crisp clear nights are on full display as we head back up into Big Trout, capturing the fall beauty of the park along this amazing storied backcountry route. This trip was the perfect maiden voyage for a new canoe too! Swift Keewaydin 15 in carbon (cherry thwart & yoke).
It has a dual height seat, detachable back support and a foot bar, effectively turning it into a pack-boat when desired. Fast and Light! I paddled strictly traditional on this trip but definitely will be trying out a double blade this year.
I utilized the 6D Mkii to do some amazing 4k timelapse and also captured a memorable midnight moonrise over glassy Macintosh Lake on the last evening.
Enjoy.
Let me know what you think and please share with like minded folks.
Doing it up Tumblehome style.

I just turned 45...the last few years I've been realizing that if I don't get up off my butt to do the things I enjoyed when I was younger....it will be too late. I waited 20 years to make it back to my annual BWCA trip. Nobody likes to do that kind of camping in my circle of friends/family....so I just started going solo, and I love it- no agenda but my own. It's a little more work, but I'm learning as I go.
Thats great! My family weren't big tripping types either but I spent a lot of time at away camps up north when I was a kid... did lots of canoeing out trips etc. I'm pretty sure I caught the bug there :-) I'm addicted to solo tripping... simple agenda, like you said.
Glad to hear your motivation. Don't wait till you're sixty! though, I'm certain still quite doable with a 50lb canoe.. I'd have to feel quite competent before I brought my dslr along though.
47 here and could not agree with you more.
Safe trips friend! Glad to hear you got your passion back!
@@filmic1 LOL I just turned 60...and I'm so stoked about going back into the park with a light canoe. I'll add a quote from some turn of the Century boxer when he was asked how it felt to be boxing at his advanced years. "I don't know but I subscribe to the old saying of how old would you be if you didn't know how old you was". It's all relative isn't it.
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this work of art, or all your paddling videos for that matter. But they bring me back to the water and the wilderness when I can’t be there and my body and soul long for it. Thank you.
Thanks Neil. Mission accomplished :-)
What every canoeing channel on CZcams should be.
Thank you.
a guy making a canoe video who can actually paddle. refreshing.
hehe... I've got loads to learn yet!
What a beautiful trip! Thank you! I'm 53 and at 40 I bought a 33 lb solo canoe ( OT Pack) and it changed my life. Even after decades of canoeing. Having a light solo canoe is a ticket to adventure and I have many memories in 13 years and hope to have decades more in her. I have caught more fish from her than I can remember and camping is a dream when I can lift and carry it so easily. I'm in the deep south and only can imagine these boundary water trips right now, but one day I will...and my canoe and I will add those trips to our long list of states and places we've fished and paddled.
There is nothing like the rythm of a canoe, and no better way to fully understand it than in a solo canoe...preferably for a few days alone...at least!
Paddle on, everyone!
Sweet! I wish I had purchased one earlier.
When I did the first portage with it, what struck me immediately was that this will allow me to go further!
Paddle on indeed.
thanks
Jason
I really don't have the time to watch as many CZcams videos as I would like to but I must say I always make time for yours. Well done Jason. Cheers, Scott.
I feel ya Scott. Thanks for the view!
There is just so much outdoor content now.. lots of it really great. I barely know where to start. I'm trying to keep on top of your vids too... always quality and humble :-)
Looking forward to your trip with both boys and your cabin build too!
Jason. I would pay US dollars to watch your stuff. Your the best, sorry Joe and Chris. Keep tripping and take us with you. It never gets old. You are a filming pro with great talent. You get the big screen and watched in full and re-watch to just chill and relax......Can't wait until the next one!
Thanks Jeff! Glad you're a fan of the vids!
Just another great job thanks. 👍🇨🇦
This was an amazing journey. Thanks for bringing me along.
amazing video Jason, wonderful to watch and come along with you on the trip. The impression of glassy Big Trout reflecting the clouds was just mesmerizing...!
With the ongoing pandemic I have watched a lot of canoe videos this past year. Yours are the best, for your cinematography, your great paddling skills and laid back relaxing attitude and appreciation for our beautiful parks. You have not posted anything recently so I hope there will be much more as we head into fall and winter 21-22. Thanks
Thanks a lot Carol... appreciate the kind words. I am just about to release a French River video that I've been slaving away at for over a year! Sheesh. I'll never build a following with 1 vid a year lol! I had two very nice trips in the fall so I've got those to work on over the winter. Glad you're enjoying the films.
A pleasure as always! Just what is warranted on a cold rainy January day! A beautiful video! Love the new canoe! Ferrari indeed!🛶
Thanks a lot Barb!
Can't beat the solo canoes it makes life so much easyer!
Indeed. I always thought my 14' cedar strip wasn't that heavy. Ha!
Talk about a gem of a video - beautifully done and a joy to watch as always! 👍 Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks a bunch Chris!
That was lovely in every way... especially on a dark, damp day in January! Thank you! (oh and "nice ride!")
Thanks man. It would take a bit more deft balance in this unit to do some poling. I almost dumped it when I was out with Jordon on the French in Oct. We loaded it right up with firewood one afternoon and I almost keeled over with the all the weight and bulk. It would slice its way up a rapid nicely though once you have the balance nailed.
Perfect.
As always.
Thanks Derek!
Glad to see a new vid.!!! Thank-you. Welcome back sir.
Thank you Gord!
Good grief, what a wonderfully beautiful production. Thank you!
No problem, thanks for watching! I've got a couple more in the works :-)

Thanks Joe. Yeah I take it for granted sometimes but I shouldn't.
There are a lot of fantastic canoe routes all within striking distance... need to take full advantage before I can longer do it!
So wonderfully done.
Thanks Mike!
Amazing, what a beauty trip, and how fortunate with such weather. Thanks so much for this footage! 🙏🏼👏🏼
I was straight lucky on that trip!
Absolutely fantastic!
I went to Quetico for my fiftieth, oh to be fifty again.

Awesome trip one of the best for sure. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks Claire
That is amazing footage & editing Jay. Also some breathtaking stills, especially your night shots. I know I'll be returning to this this a few times before the ice melts. Huge thanks for sharing the fruits of your efforts, well worth the wait.
Thanks Jamie. Please watch and share whenever it strikes you!

You are very welcome
Excellent Job! I was riveted the entire time. I've paddles many of those places in my younger day (I'm also 50) when I lived in Algonquin Park. I'm in BC now and I still do lots of paddling both in Canoes and Kayaks. I really enjoyed seeing your trip. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Awesome! Thanks Trevor. I spent a little time out in BC when doing my Navy training (30 yrs ago :-). I never got around to any canoeing but I sure would like to do some trips out there now.
Getting us through the January blahs. Amazing video, photos, editing. Loved every second! Thanks. Can't wait for canoe season.
Thanks!
Great trip, canoe, music, and photography. Couldn't get any better. Thanks, Jason.

Thanks Ted! The Park is a busier place these days... but still awesome!
This is the greatest backcountry video I have ever seen.
Awesome! Thanks brother. Tell all your friends :-)
Superb... thoroughly enjoyable viewing on this wet and nasty day (and living on a ski hill, that is most assuredly not what you want).
Thank you for taking us along on your trip, matey.
Stay well,
Steve.
No problem!
Fantastic images - both still and cinematography! Thanks for sharing your trip and your beautiful country with CZcams. Great inspiration.
Thanks Michael! Glad you appreciate the effort.
An absolute joy to watch! Did the same trip in 2007 with my brother. We had big winds on Big Trout and were windbound for a day on White Trout, so I really enjoyed the contrast you had. Thanks for bringing back great memories. Sweet boat!
Thanks Fran! That was a treat rolling into Big Trout like that.
Hey Jason, happy 50th! And a sweet gift and trip to celebrate. It's great seeing everyone releasing videos in the winter of their canoe trips. It sure keeps us going. Great work on the photography and cinematography!
Thanks! Editing keeps me sane in the off months.

ha! The itch is real! thankyou
Masterfully edited and scored as always Jason. Wish I could be a fly on the wall of your home studio so I could learn. Incredible time lapses, loved it.
Thanks Jon! I need to get on watching more of your vids now that I'm done cutting for a bit.
Yours is some of the best outdoor-focused content on the web, period, and, as others have commented, this effort is beautifully filmed, edited and scored. Thank you for creating and sharing this video!
Just finished watching all your videos, you are by far the best you tuber.Thank you for sharing these videos with us and please keep them coming.
Thank you!
what a great high-quality video. thanks for posting. that exact route is the best trip my wife and i have been on (so far).
i love that night 2 campsite on big-trout. the swimming rock and view are worth the lack of flat ground. :D
the first time i camped there was by accident when i went east instead of north after coming from white trout. it was the best site of my trip! have been back to it twice since then.
Thanks Jeff,
yes that site is a dandy! That island is so picturesque.
That long portage!! The first time I carried a 17' Grumman! Then some years later we got out 18' Winona and we did it in 1 carry. Man a pack and a canoe with a few stops along the way!! Great video!!
Yeah it's a long one... much, much better with a lighter boat.
I briefly considered a single carry... maybe next time I'll do the ol' 1 1/2 carry ;-)
Amazing video and pictures!
Thanks Brandon.
Great video to help beat those February blues..! Appreciate you taking us on your journey and the effort to film it.. Hit 50 myself last year and picked up a sweet ride from Swift too.. Spring is calling.. So keep on Paddling on..!!
Thanks man. Thats a sweet looking pack boat...nice colour.
Happy 50th! Always remember that I was your first sub. :-)

Awesome. Burnt Island is an amazing lake for exploring with kids!
Man that was beautiful. Thank you so much. Congrats on the boat. I love your videos, they're always a gift. Such nice cinematography.
Thanks a lot!
Was sad when this excellent film ended. Thanks Jason!
Thank you!
Best video I have seen in quite awhile.i am 68 and just got a play kayak, for now.found some like minded girls to go with, just gonna find myself now.after working and raising a family, its me time
Yeah get at it! My mom and Dad got into kayaking later in life... not soon enough though. They wanted to do more but it just wasn't in the cards. Get up to the French River if you can... kayak heaven!
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome thanks!
Wow one of the coolest videos I've ever seen on CZcams! 👍👍😎
Thanks for sharing this with us!!
Thanks Tyler... glad you liked that much!
Check out some of my older stuff at your leisure. It all has a similar vibe.
Thanks! I love watching padling on youtube. I know it takes time to film and edit so I appreciate it even more. Gives my day a the amount of bliss I need. Enjoy your future trips! I know I will do ;) The angle of the filming while you paddle was excellent. With the choice of "music" was amazing. And you are a very good paddler, was very nice to watch. Take care!
Thank you for those kind words brother. 🤘
The King is back 🙌
The King of slow ass post production :-). Thanks man.
Ok......you deserve all the recognition you will get!!!.....beautifully done!
Thanks a bunch!
Really enjoying your video. Can’t wait for ice out and getting back on the water.
Thanks Chris!
78 now and still out in my canoe every chance I get. My canoe is 48 lbs . Cheers thanks
Great one!
Always wanted to do a trip like this, so peaceful. Thank you so much for inviting me along on yours.
Thanks for watching!
What wonderfully crafted outdoor adventure film. I've always loved the outdoors. When I was 12ish, my grandfather capsized our little row boat. We weren't wearing life jackets. We never did. We were a good distance from shore, and I know I wasn't supposed to swim for it, but rather stay with the boat. I went for it and I made it, though I probably shouldn't have. Ever since then, I've been pretty fearful of smaller watercraft. In college I did a tandem canoe race in a river, and my paddle partner rolled the canoe. We were wearing vests. Haven't really trusted a canoe since then.
Now, in my early 50's, nearly 30 years later, and after seeing all of these long canoe trips being posted to CZcams, and seeing skilled paddlers slogging through rough waters, and gliding on smooth glass, it's changed my perspective about small crafts. I went solo canoeing for the first time on Loon Lake in Minnesota this past June, and loved the experience. It's really given me the itch to get a boat. Never too late to get started, I guess. Onward and Upward. :)
yeah! Thats great. I did my first solo when I was about 30. It's not everyones cup of tea but that solitude is hard to beat.
Great trip thanks. Enjoyed traveling with you on this throughout the park. 👍🇨🇦
Thank you Tom.
Great vid Jason, amazing photography. Thanks for taking us along. Nice one and all the best from the UK
Thanks!
That keewaydin just glides!
Yes! It may be a tad slower now that I've scratched it up a bit :-)
Stayed at that exact Grassy bay site a few years ago. Awesome filming! One of the best in this canoeing youtube community for sure.
Thanks 👍
Stunning as always
Thanks!
That Loon photo!!! Niice! Great video!
Thanks Max. I had a few keepers in that burst of shots but that one was the best... the one foot and wingtips just grazing the water!
