The Soldano SLO is a legendary amp that was pretty influential and spawned a few similar amps from Mesa Boogie and Peavey (and probably some others?). I hadn't explored this much, but with the new cabs, it is possible to run both the Clean and Lead channel in one preset, which it turns out yields HUGE tones!

I'm happy the hx stomp led me to this channel. The playing is just beautiful! Sometimes I just watch any video he puts up just for the intro jam !
My favorite part of the day!
Me too
Same…I originally tuned in for the Helix info, now I tune in for John’s playing
Same. He's awesome to have as the first vibes for the day rather than watching the morning news. All good every morning
Now my main preset. Clean is really great. This gets better every time you post a video. Your playing is off the chart. Very inspiring. Wish you 1M subscriber for 2023. You deserve it.
This may be your best yet! Great sound, playing, and BT!
I wasn't ready for this epic playing that was just fantastic.
Your playing is almost liquid.
The Soldano crunch channel is my favorite amp model in the Helix, def recommend folks give that a try if you're struggling to get nice crunch tones. Underrated amp/channel/model for sure.
AMEN!!!
Mine too.on the POD GO
Drop’er on in the folder! Sounds amazing. I’ll gig it this weekend.
I also plan on purchasing some of your presets in the future, them lead tones are amazing! Big fan of your work, your channel made me essentially go ahead and take the plunge on getting a HX Stomp XL. Keep up the awesome content. 🔥
When I got my HX Stomp over 2 years ago, the Soldano Presets we're the first ones that heard that sounded great right out of the box for the cleans, crunchy, and cranked overdriven tones. It is the Amp that proved to me that the HX Stomp could sound absolutely amazing! It is easily one of my top 3 amps. I can always count on it to inspire my playing. The tones you dialed in sound undeniably awesome. 😎
Love it! Great job, John! Gig all day with that preset.
Epic intro track, the soloing is just off the charts, especially on the Les Paul!
Absolutely incredible player and playing!! Outstanding musicianship! Wow !
SO nice to have some reviews that aren't fizzy gained-up chugging. Thanks for showing how this sounds clean & edge of breakup.
That intro on the Lester was just superb.Tone and playing. Also, do you have a video about your history, when you started playing, how you learnt, etc?
Beautiful tones and melody
I´m surprised how good the clean channel is, considering the Soldano is more famous for balls to the wall high-gain tones.
And yes, EVH apparently used the SLO-100 on the F.U.C.K album, before working with Peavey.
George Lynch also used it on the Wicked Sensation album and as mentioned Gary Moore ( the Live Blues album and Live in Montreux 1990, that´s all SLO-100) .
The clean channel is also very notorious and the crunch + klon type pedal is legendary.
Martin Barre likes Soldano amps as well
The Soldano Clean with the OH IR you had in your pack has been my go to.
What!? I'd never have thought a traditional Strat would be able to deliver the massive sound of those chords at the beginning!
Holy shit John, the opening here is bananas.
I love your channel.
Monster playing and great information.
The Les Paul solo towards the end of the intro song was awesome!!
Yes great playing and great advice on the stomp, new comer to stomp! Subscribed .
Literally amazing tones in intro, from South Korea
Bought done and Dusted!!
Thanks so much!!
Jesus you went OFF on that solo 🔥
This is why the next Helix needs way more DSP. I would love to use all the Soldano models as a Channel 1, 2, 3 setup. What I'm going though is that future modeling just includes that. You have that "amp" with an the channels included instead of 3 different amps. I'm not worried about different setting cause Snapshots exist. Great video.
That intro was beyond epic
Knopfler predominantly used the Crunch feature (“channel”) on the SLO100, even for all his clean stuff and sometimes the lead ch for the higher gain songs (Eg. Heavy Fuel etc).
I just started messing with the SLO in the PodGo and it is also awesome 😎
This amp model literally did not have a bad sound in it in your programming and playing hands. Killer.
Thanks a lot!
I still enjoy the SLO model in my old PODxt! I think it's one of the few that have held up rather well, considering the time and technology gap.
that and the jubilee... man i wish they put a jubilee in the helix.
Hell yes to adding to folder please. Maybe make a helix version too?
Rick Beato called and said he wants his shirt back.
Great amp!
I have just discovered the cruch channel in the soldano... It's amazing!
Try to be interested in it, it's worth it!
Are those Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans in the background? 😂Great playing as always!
Awesome video as always! I have a question in regards to using the HX Stomp live.
I've recently gotten an HX Stomp XL to use with a Seymour Duncan Powerstage 170 for a backup "modeler pedalboard amp" through a 2x12 cab. Sounds amazing! Surprised how similar it sounds to my Revv G20 live setup I use from time to time. Only issue I'm noticing so far is when I get to higher volume levels it's causing my cab to rattle on bigger more palm-muted chords. Which has never happened before with my Revv G20 or my Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 45.
I go for a fairly similar sound with all my setups, and I feel my Helix presets are right on par with my tube heads as far as EQ parameters. Nothing outlandish and different compared to how I EQ my tube amps. Have you ever ran into this issue?
Do I maybe have something I need to do with the settings on the HX Stomp for live use through a physical cab that I'm not aware of? I don't believe it's a very detrimental issue to my cab but I'm just curious if I could get some advice from the Helix Guru! All advice would be greatly appreciated. 🤟😁
Mais um belo trabalho
Where oh where do you get all these gorgeous super Stratocasters? Ebony fret board, sea foam green, cream colored pick guard, roasted headstock, omg I love that thing.
Hi, I don't know if this is possible on the hx stomp but I've recently learned about the Soldano x88r preamp. Its a preamp that was created when Bob Bradshaw contacted Mike Soldano to create a preamp for Steve Lukather. At the time Steve was using Mesa boogies for cleans, Marshalls for Crunch and Soldano for leads. Do you think you can get close to the soldano x88R preamp using snapshots. Thanks for inspiring all of us.
Beautiful tone! Are you playing through an amp/ monitors and then recording the video?
Damn! That sounds amazing! What’s the bridge pickup in your strat? It almost sounds like a humbucker and not bright/twangy like you would expect.
You can get very SLO-like tones with the REVV Purple, too. And it has the deep parameter.
The Revv G3 pedal ?
That really sounds incredible with the Gibson LP!
Taylor Swift???
Interesting and quick micing choice.
I need to try this amp setting on my helix. Holy shit
See that what I'm talking about see his DYNAMIC PICKING RANGE,he makes the guitar cry, sing and behave as A PERSON conversation with you... simple masterful
This guy playing SLO presets: Amazing
Me playing SLO presets: Poo
Killer shit. When you playin' Earl's Court?
Big fan here! I am considering to buy either Sire S7 Larry Carldon or FGN odessey. If you were me, which one would you prefer and why? :)
This is only 1 of the many great amps Helix has modeled so well. The Slo 100 Head alone is $2000! To have all these awesome Amp tones and effects with multiple effects chain capabilities it's a no- brain decision in my book. Get the Helix for a fraction of the price and requires a fraction of the stage and storage space needed! Win win in my book! Definitely a worthwhile investment!
Would it not be more correct/accurate, to state that the tone of THE SOLDANO AMP IS AMAZING and its replica/copy in the Helix is identical???
Awesome intro jam BTW & greetings from Down Under 🤟
Yeeey Humbucker goodness 😎🤘🏽
Backing track on this please. Tunes are awesome!
Oh that Les Paul tone! So RICH!
Hello sir, how do you record your hx stomp sir? I couldn’t get that quality everytime I record. Im a newbie.
I just bought your presets package for this preset. have you not added it yet ? I can't find it :(
Please forgive the gear question: what pickups are you using?
Tasty, like a werthers original, swizzlers or a flump.
I’m sure you’ve been asked this many times, do you EQ any of these recordings in Post for your CZcams videos or is it all raw tones straight into your daw?
I personally found the Ampero Stomp II was better at amp sound and feel. Not sure since the latest HX firmware update though. Sounds like they massively improved the models.
I especially like Taylor Swift’s Soldano tones. She lost something with the switch to Rectos
How can I do add this to my Helix floor? Copy the way you did it on the HX Stomp?
shredding insues* abrubt stop “umm so…” 9:39
I'm not quite sure I understand. Do we NEED these tones?
Are you using a live speaker cab? Or is it just through interface
Sorry for being a dumbass, which one of the links to I click to get a hold of the presets used in the video? They sound epic!
John, I am considering buying your pre-sets from you. How much is in your 'Helix and HX Stomp General Presets' package?
Been a while since I bought them, but if I remember correctly it was the enormous sum of about 3 quid
How do I get this preset?
I check the price it's costlier than POD line 6
Folder please🙂
Taylor Swift... Lol. That made my day
+++ Hi John, Mesaboogie stole the circuit from Mike Soldano. It is a clone+++ Proved by Mike itself, thats why i would never user a Mesa again....
Haven't amp makers been building upon others' circuits since the beginning of time? I love the shit out of my Rivera... and you don't see people saying, "Oh no! He took those circuits straight from a Fender and a Marshall!" Friedman amps? He wouldn't have a business if it weren't for the Marshall circuits he's taken and improved upon. Mesa has a lot of negatives - but their circuit ancestry shouldn't be one of them. Building on the shoulders of giants... Every industry known to man does it.
@@PerryCodes yes, you are right, they all look what others are doing, but in that case it´s no try to lean on or "improve" it is just a cheaper copy... just my opinion. Mesa was so much bigger at that time..... But !!! most important is that the amps sound good...
And just saying "the circuit" is too broad in this context. It was only the preamp that is almost 1:1 between the SLO and Rectifier. The power sections are completely different. As is the overall sound. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone that says a Rectifier sounds anything like a SLO.
All that said... I would also never purchase a Mesa :D For those interested, I think it's Tone Talk Ep. 19 where Dave Friedman and Mike Soldano discuss this SLO business. It's definitely worth a listen.
We'll see if YT let's me post this link: czcams.com/video/0N_UpOeYGVo/video.html
Please switch of the reverb, it smears all the detail.
How can you use the words "Gary Moore" and "Taylor Swift" in the same sentence?! C'mon man. You can do better.
Nice playing though, so I'll give you a pass on this one. Please behave yourself in future.
I'm also miffed that I'm now gonna have to buy an HX Stomp.
Winston, you may have missed the joke.
Yikes.
@@johnnathancordy No. 😉
@@johnnathancordy I heard Taylor swift’s next album will be played exclusively through a Soldano, so you’re not wrong. She’ll be soloing on every song too…
