To that dispatcher- THANK YOU for telling Bao it is absolutely an emergency. Bao, never feel like "I dont want to clog up 911" when you're in genuine danger. Even if it was only a near-miss, reporting this to emergency responders is HUGE for the next potential victim. Glad you're okay!

Thankfully the dispatcher knew what to say to get her to realize what was going on. I'm guessing that wasn't the first kind of call they'd gotten like that. It just bothers me that she didn't think THIS was an emergency. I know she wanted to think the guy wasn't gonna do anything, but that's not something she should be risking.

I'm not gonna lie. I was very concerned for Bao from the moment I saw the tweet, but respected this as a private matter that she would give details only if she was comfortable and ready. I'm glad she was ultimately safe, even if the reminders of just how dangerous horny strangers can be have been a little too frequent lately even just among her friends. I can only wish her and everyone else safety and genuinely try to make what small influence I manage in this world a source of protection and positive change hoping others do the same.

Shits surprisingly scary. Had similiar expirience once, was working at a call center as an it helpdesk, which is honestly one of the absolute worst jobs ever, and during that evening shift a drunk ass bastard starts to scream at me on the phone that he knows where i work and that he has a gun and hell be coming to my workplace to shoot me. Fun fun fun. Well, after work, when Im cycling home, I had to cycle since it was only few kilometers to my job and my parents definetly werent going to drive me there and back, and lo and behold, a goddamned car starts following me once I leave my workplace and follows me all the way home. Scared me shitless and I was hard of sleep once I got home due to that bullshit. As far as I can tell the caller threatening my life and the car following me had nothing to do with each other and it was just a complete coincidence.
As for Bao getting self defence equipment she really should take some classes to learn how to use them properly and acclimatize herself into self defence situations ie in situations where she has to fight because that shit can be either useless if you just freeze during a conflict and cant do anything to make situation much worse if the assailant gets ahold of your self defence equipment or becomes even more angered or enraged due to you even having it.

As someone well-versed in self-defense, you actually did the biggest part of self-defense, get out of there. Taser is a good choice, or pepper spray. Guns aren't something to jump to unless you are comfortable using them beforehand, beyond that in this situation a Taser would have been ideal, just a quick jab will give you room to make distance. Another big rule for self-defense is to end the situation as swiftly as possible, and a Taser is a big tool for that as unlike a gun you don't have to really worry about killing someone, let alone the bang from it.
And another rule that you observed is don't engage with them, ignore them, don't say shit. Goal is to get away if in the situation.
Of course the first rule to self defense is don't be in a situation where you need to defend yourself. Second is gtfo when you realize you are. Third is to end the situation asap and escape. Another rule is to be as uninteresting of a target as possible, unfortunately, speaking as a woman myself, certain things you can't control, like, say, being a woman. Which is really frustrating to have to admit but that is the reality of it.

yep and when you're in it, there's this neat little thing that always gets in the way: during any traumatic situation, your emotional side goes absolutely wild. everyone's does. nobody thinks clearly in the moment.
if you want to help others, your first battle is against your own brain. and it takes months of continuous and repeated practice under pressure to learn how to condition yourself to rapidly set aside your emotions so you can reliably think logically at all. (emergency service workers get this through their months of training. and special forces units and some militaries also give this training to their soldiers.)
i unfortunately got my ability to effectively deal with such traumatic problems from years of abuse from school personnel then classmates in elementary. has come in handy helping others in serious situations tho, like getting my mom (who was the driver) out of a car rapidly filling with choking amounts of dust after a ~30mph collision caused by hydroplaning in a curve in a road going downhill

tw: sa. kinda venting here, sorry about that
living as a fem person is so hard. can relate to bao so much because i'm being catcalled, harassed, followed, cars with multiple men inside block my path, etc at least once a month, closer to once a few weeks. i don't have boobs or ass, in fact i wear a binder and baggy clothes over my nonexistent curves because of dysphoria (guess why i have dysphoria). i usually don't wear makeup, no revealing clothes either. i've been sa'd a month ago a few steps away from my apartment building by a complete stranger. thankfully i managed to scare him away by shouting, swearing, kicking him and trying to get him off me, but now i can't go outside without battling with panic attacks and now i'm failing my education. i didn't call the police because in my country they have the history of blaming the victims and laughing at us, doing nothing to catch perpetrators. i've become such a mess because of 1 scumbag animal and now idk how to live anymore and if i should even try to push through and continue living. i'm not gonna do anything stupid to myself, but now i have no mental capacity to try and get better. also therapy is not really an option because i don't have money for it and also they hold the same beliefs as the police. i'm just devastated.
thank you and i'm sorry to everyone who read this fucking mess lmao. i hope you understood what i was trying to say because i'm too tired to check for any errors

Not to be an Armchair Therapist or just some guy online trying to tell someone what's wrong, but her rationalizing it, sounded like a way of coping. Because no one wants to think that something like that, would or even could happen to them. No one wants to see themselves as a statistic. And that's understandable.
I'm glad to hear she got a personal alarm, and some self defense items. She got really lucky that car came in and got in that creeps way. Hopefully she's not too shaken up about this.

Just listening to your recollection of what happened is terrifying so I can only imagine how it was for you to experience firsthand Bao.
Firstly, happy that you are safe and that you acted rationally in the face of this situation and you reported this creep.
While I’m no psychologist, my guess is that you downplayed everything as a form of self defence where you deny the possibilities where you’ve heard of similar scenarios escalating in a more harmful direction and essentially it’s your mind trying to remain focused on survival and not succumbing to panic.
After you removed yourself from that experience and talking to the 911 dispatcher (Max props to her btw), the full gravity of the experience hit you hard so you were quiet while heading home cos you were in a mild state of shock and psychologically you were processing and trying to make sense of it all.
Personally I’m concerned on how often incidents like these are sadly occurring like:
    1. Lily and that delivery driver in December
    2. The two guys who harassed Yuzu when she went out to eat.
    3. Tricky dealing with this stalker over the past couple of years.
    Now this with you… 😨
It’s sad that things are like this so please take any and all precautions to protect yourself Bao from this point.

"i had nothing on me - i had my *keys* and-"
My Advice if in a country that is ridiculous about self defense - Always keep a ring of/a fresh made key on you, freshly made *specifically*
(tl;dr for those that can't read long good so much)
i remember when being really young, my dad brought used to have 2 'sets' of keys. one was his normal keys, front/back/car door keys. And the other one, always in his right pocket, never 'was used', thus, was sharp as a sushi knife and had a handle of sorts. He got it out a few times to open cans of beans or soup for us when going camping up the Mournes. I was mucking around as a teen in, on my 'mum's side family', granda's garage and go in the tool shed, looking for a screw driver, open up a few metal drawers and there, i see what looks like my dad's second key, his was stubby but its 100% a screwdriver handle attached? i got a better look and the key was welded onto the metal joint of the connecting part of handle.
My granda comes in and i go 'what's dad's 'emergency can opener' doing in here? one like this at least'
"Well, it CAN be used for that but that's not why those were made"
My grandad explained a lot to me then, some stuff my granny only knew had happened to him as he came from a time in N.irish history where it was the norm for something like this to happen daily: he once was in a bar that WASN'T his local and 2 guys came in, one yelled, then just went up and punched guy beside my grandad, then him and his friend beside him (who got side blasted) and as my granda said he was about to clip the wanker, the other one sawn-off shotgun'd the guy 2 seats down from him and both scattered n were chased but away they went. now why? (he was not of the same type of christianity as killer was, welcome to N.Ireland 1940'' - late 1990's, my dad was BORN in that time where your friends were then always rivaled with the other type of christians maybe 5 streets away, you had the IRA, and with that, you get the picture (and i, luckily, was born JUST as it ended).
My grandad was now terrified to go even to the shops, he was denied any self defense items (remember, UK, not america) so he only would go for a walk up down
Then my granny came home one day with a new set of keys for the house and my granda couldn't get it through the front door's key hole, ended up jigging it, moving it about and getting annoyed to the point he squeezed his hand so hard he felt a twinge and opened it to a bloody hand with the back door key in it.
And thats when he said he thought of the idea, if the government were gonna do nothing about it and punish you if you do try and defend yourself, he found a work around.
So, later on, as im about 15-16, we are all at a family get together. my granda pulls me into a room away from my cousins and their parents. My mum, dad, aunt and uncle are all in there already and all, bar my auntie, pull their 'fresh-key-handles' out, they are ancient looking, my uncle said he only had to take it out once and never used it. But my granda apparently after that incident, decided that for his kids, something thats small but within legal framework, to protect themselves, is needed - in the case of being attacked/kidnapped/shot at etc. But quicker than he'd liked, his neighbor asked about them, these neighbors were not the type you'd want having these self defense items nah these were 'weapons' for them, but also asked what COULD he possibly 'help them with doing' (which he wouldn't tell me exactly what but it was dangerous enough for a granda we used to make homemade-gunpowder fireworks together with, so i got the jist of 'what/how deadly' quickly) and said thats when he decided HIS family were the only ones who'd have one ever made and now, he's stopping before his lil garage of bikes n cars becomes 'a factory'. He says now that he sees the amount of knife crime on TV these days, he regrets making them and he'd never make one now for them, but back then, "any defense was better than no defense, not coming home and being in the paper tomorrow" which was something he learnt from my dad's side of the family and an uncle i never got to meet.
i still carry 3 brand new keys on a ring with me to this day and only thought i'd have to possibly use em a handful of times, never have but always been thankful i'd had them in my pocket incase (esp if travelling in england, ESPECIALLY london, literally where a few of the 'possible times' happened, fuckin 'roadmen' cardboard gangsters). though thanks to the 'gift of gab' perk, i could get out of 'difficult' situations pretty unfazed/unhurt
So TL;dr Got a shit country laws on self defense? There's always gonna be a *key* to feeling safer.
(Now this is a longer post - so... any 'look at that wall of text, i *can't* read all that!' attention span-less but attention craving wasters out there? - Your elementary level english is in YT shorts. Your not expected to read this, don't worry if you can't, i understand some kids get on this app and can't quite read paragraphs yet.)
