  • -6°F in a 36 year old camper that we JUST moved into. While Tennessee gets weather like this from time to time, we weren't expecting to see it during our first year on our Off-Grid homestead. 6 inches of snow and and cold temps but we try to make the most of it while doing everything we can to keep our camper from freezing up!

    In Tennessee the freezing temperatures keeps the chiggers and ticks lower during the summer.

    Get that camper underpined……use straw bails….cardboard….foam boards or at least heavy plastic…..it will help keep your camper warmer because the wind won’t blow under it….love what your are doing…..we had a camper for 14 years in Bean Station Tn……enjoy

  • @carmenortiz4446

    Shovel some snow melt it and filter it. Keep your water just in case. We also live in an RV. The wood furnace keeps everything toasty. Make that a priority!

    For the subfloor of the camper,if you put skirting around the camper outside,it keeps the wind from blowing through and keeping things colder…..I’ve done a lot of winter camping and adding skirting made a world of difference

      Yes we've had them I all of our rigs. Lots of people complain about the noise but it doesn't bug us - it's almost like white noise after over 3 years of using them! Haha we have thought of hay or straw for this winter as a temporary solution. This coming week is all 50s and 60s so we'll see! Haha

    We are not on solar or a generator in our home, just our camper, so we do not run resistant heat with a power station when the electric goes off as they drain a power station quicker than anything else. We use wood for heat, and the power station for lights, recharging phones and laptops, refrigerator and freezer. We do have two small generators we use to recharge the power stations.
    Some people that don't prepare really suffer when the power goes off. The good thing about Tennessee is that if you are prepared for two weeks survival is that it will be warm well before your run out. On Jan. 22 things are melting, and the roads have been mostly clear for 2 days. This was predicted for a week in advance so we kept both vehicles full of gas up until we got mostly snowed in.

    I have an idea for you Matt but you may have already know it. I have placed a bare 60 watt incandescent light bulb directly on my bathroom sink water line and toilet water line. A plumber said to do this to thaw a frozen water supply line. It took a few hours but it worked! I would assume that you could also do this to prevent the lines from freezing. Would use less energy than a space heater. FYI my water lines were copper and stainless steel not plastic. HTH!

    My wife and I recently found your channel. We are impressed with what you are attempting. We started a similar project four years ago in North Carolina. I have not watched all your videos, so please forgive me if you have addressed this issue already. Watching you dig fence posts holes by hand reminds me of our early efforts and the memory alone makes my arms ache. After a few dozen post holes, and knowing we had hundreds more to dig, we bought an auger. We have the 4 inch and 6 inch bits as well as a 2 ft extension. Digging six holes by hand used to wipe me out for the whole day. Now my wife and I can sink 20 5 inch by 8 ft posts four feet in the ground in a morning. As you move forward with your homestead I think you will find an augur well worth the money. Also, by sinking 8 ft poles 4 feet in the ground (and then making a H brace) you won’t need concrete. This will save a lot of money over time.

    If you wanted to stay warm app, why don't you get some phone board and put it all around the outside and even to make the upstairs the loft part of your trailer warmer, you can actually stand 4 by sheets app with a wooden frame underneath that floor like where the goose knack is, and will that heat. Are under there and all the foam around the bottom outside. That'll actually get warmer under that trailer. And all the trailer underneath will be warmer and it'll make the upper part of the trailer warmer and you get that tune in's form bored cheap. I don't know I think it's $2530 a sheet 4 by and I wouldn't take that much to cover that trip. Because someone you're gonna have to cut in half long ways and go around the bottom of the lower part of the trailer. And then you'll need at least no more than 6 or 8 for the top front of that. Goose neck part of the trailer. But you will have a warmer trailer after you do that

      Line tanks, underside, and drape down double bubble foil. SERIOUSLY, See Off Grid Homesteading with Boss of the Swamp YT channel. No rodents either! Leave Bottom cabinet doors open at night (oh, you just said that!). If use rv water pump, turn it OFF at night and open the faucets to 'drain' water from lines. I'm in 26ft travel trailer north AZ at 5500 ft. No problems! 2nd winter.

The valves are your biggest issue and I have only ever had one fail from freezing. Situate your valves to face south in the winter with little shade and they will defrost faster in the sun. Drill half inch holes in your cabinet doors where plumbing runs because your cabinets are not letting the warmth in at places. I like having my cabinets vented anyhow to keep mildew and such from happening. You might also consider getting maybe a 90 gallon propane tank out there next to the trailer. They will come out and fill it for you when the road is good.

    Yes skirting around your RVing would help a lot. 3 or 4 inch styrofoam would do it. Probably the easiest way plus less cost than other methods. We bought ours at lowes. Home Depot would have it too in 4x8 sheets. Easy to cut to with a serrated knife. I used my electric knife.

    Have you thought about insulating under your camper,and blocking it?

  • @kingglizzer

    Nothing like appreciating sunny days when it's 20° and that's 20° warmer than yesterday. The weather could surprise us, but the worst is probably over. Do you have the big solar panel array hooked up? I think the panels capture more energy in colder temps. Running generator to charge batteries might be inefficient $/watt, idunno. I will start putting sliced avocado in my tortilla soup.

    • @RunawayMattCass
      @RunawayMattCass  Před 7 měsíci

      So true! Today's high is 35 and we are LOVING it when 2 weeks ago we would've hated it. The big array isn't hooked up yet. The weather put the project on hold but we are hoping to have the "solar shed" built and it all connected in the coming weeks. You definitely lose some efficiency charging the batteries from the generator but it's a "on half dozen or the other" when compared to the efficiency loss of running the generator 24/7 even when little power is needed...not to mention having to wake up at 1am in -6 to top it off! Hahaha. Avocado in tortilla soup is a must! 10/10 recommend. Cheers!

    Got about 10 inches in east TN. Same brutal low Temps. What are you doing about moisture and condensation in the camper? We ended up buying a full size dehumidifier. Stay warm!

    • @RunawayMattCass
      @RunawayMattCass  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It was wild! Hope y'all stayed warm. We actually don't have too much of a condensation issue because we are running diesel heaters. Most of our condensation comes when we cook. So far we've been okay without a dehumidifier.

      @RunawayMattCass  Před 7 měsíci

      Happy to hear you'd be warm in -6. Cold is all relative to the averages of where you are, what you're acclimated to and how your home and equipment is suited for the conditions. While -6 may seem like "picnic weather" to you, it's 34 degrees colder than our average low here and we got a year's worth of snow in a night.

    I would be making that building my house with a wood heater going inside,,,,,,I don’t care what the State of Tennessee says I have lived in Tennessee my whole life and have seen houses like that everywhere. I really doubt if someone is going to come out and inspect such a thing . I have lived in an r v in the winter and it’s a chore keeping them warm

    Do you have a fan in the sub floor to circulate the warm air?

    • @RunawayMattCass
      @RunawayMattCass  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Not a fan but I added a blower about half way down the longest line to help move more air where it slows down. It seems to do the job really well - there's just one spot that we seem to have a little trouble if the temps get near 0
