Welcome back to another Liveration episode!
In this video we speak to Paul, who lives in North Devon with his family, in a stunning, self built, Off Grid home.
This amazing, modern looking, Off Grid home sits on 15 acres of land, along with a barn and native woodland.
Paul has built a lifestyle here that is fully off grid, his power comes from the sun, his heat comes from a fire using the trees that he fells from his own land, and water comes from collecting and filtering rain water, and drinking water comes from a spring out of the ground.
He also raises his own animals and grows fruit trees!
Paul stares his story with us, of how he came to living this way from a small 'chicken coop' of a house and barely affording the monthly bills.
We also get a full tour of his land and a tour of the outside and the inside of his house.
This house comes with all you'd imagine from a so-called 'normal' house.
How does Paul and his family make this lifestyle work?....find out in the video!!
Thanks to Paul for sharing his story with us and showing us around his off grid home and land.

This man is rich. Has everything he needs and spends 4 days a week with his family. True wealth.
Sounds like he was richer than most before he moved. I don’t many people who can pay there electricity bill but have £140000 to buy land like that. Hell of a deposit to have tbh

How’s he afford all that land
@@SpacemanSmee He used the equity from selling his city house for the land and the build.

What a crazy world we live in. Can't afford to live in concrete jungles, all crammed into street after street, and all while all the big suppliers charge a fortune and make massive profit year by year. Yet this guy HAD to look at alternative options and it turns out a spot of paradise is affordable. Something very backwards with this. I absolutely envy this man and I hope they all continue to be happy out there. Got me thinking hard!
I don't pay them haven't paid water TV for 9 years tax 9 years gas and electricity about 18 months c tax this year sod them
You know the profit per customer is around £50/100 per year for energy. I'm all for the off grid life but don't kid yourself about what it cost to maintain the national grid.
@@matty506 aye, it looks like a difficult start up for the guy. Prob the average person would struggle to set up, but it looks great to me.

This chap is an inspiration. What I admire about him is that he is so humble and honest. He is everyone’s perfect neighbour.
I love the fact that you took your family back to your family’s land without really knowing it. Best of luck to you ☘️
They're absolutely living my dream!!! They're not disconnected they're REconnected!!!
I live deep in the forest covered mountains of Maine (USA). For the last 6 years the ONLY liquid I've drank is water that comes from my artisan well. The well is 470 feel deep and taps into an ancient underground aquafer. The water I drink has likely been underground, protected from the pollutants of the modern age, for more than 1000 years. It's especially delicious and I've become quite the water snob, lol.
Fantastic lifestyle & he's 100% correct about the bullshit within the system that's why they don't want any of us to escape from it because people would soon realise they don't need the system to survive the system needs us to exist !!!! This man is richer than any billionaire living within the matrix !!! Good luck to him & his family !!
What a Shang-grid-La!! Best of luck to you all from Canada! Vancouver Island and yes, there are off grid options here. Get far enough away from "the rulers" and you can do anything. Well water, wood stoves, gardens, septic tanks and trees. We have deer, fish, elk and chickens, fresh eggs and meat. Ducks, cows, llamas and alpacas, plus all the domestics: horses, dogs cats and all kinds of pet birds and even snakes and lizards. Great communities and lots of people helping each other. Back to the earth, yes, way to go!!
The more these people will show their lifestyle, the faster system gonna stop it. There is absolutely no space for 8 bln people to leave like that at thirst place. Soon it gonna be forbidden. Very true 💯 percent
I know Paul and family, and I'm glad he's got this platform to showcase what he has achieved. Building this life and pursuing being off grid has given him wisdom beyond his years. I hope this gives other a small wedge in the brains, question the system and what other opportunities can be created. All the best to Paul and family and to anyone else giving off grid a go.
This guy is 100 percent correct. I sold everything and got out, live in a van but it’s nice. I don’t regret it. Life is becoming unsustainable. And that’s a serious fact.
yeah im the same.started staying in my 1st van at weekends then decided i wanted more so gave up my house, bought a bigger van and have been in it for over 2 years.dont regret it at all and unless i can be in a situation, identical to the guy in this video,i will NEVER live in a house again
I'm considering doing the same. I earn a decent wage and don't have any luxury items or go on holidays and by the end of each month my money's gone. I don't know how people live on an average or below average salary.
So seriously considering selling my house and doing my own van build and just living like that.
Most van life people are done with it after a few years. I guess you are still in the celebration phase and I hope you keep enjoying it
Building my van for off grid was the most eye opening thing I’ve done. Now bought some derelict property’s for a small holding :) infectious, this van life haha
Yall are living the life.
Listening to Pauls comments on being trapped in the system, is like listening to the thoughts that are constantly spinning round my mind, this literally sums up what society has become and the trappings of modern living. Absolutely love what he's built here, it's perfect. Buying land and being able to do this now is becoming more and more difficult, cost, restrictions as to what you can do etc. We all know why that is. What an excellent way of living.
I’m off grid, in a wood for last 10 years. The idea at the end about time, that’s the thing that decided for me. I was well paid, but realised my time was worth more to me than anything I could earn, because your time is finite.
I’m thinking of that
Would love your advice or if you are renting land ?
Sounds amazing! I keep seeing woodland for sale. When I looked into it, you are allowed a "shed" with specific measurements. Do you have to commit to maintaining the trees, etc? I am unsure how owning a woodland works.
Also, would it be all yours or are people allowed access? Thanks for any advice 🙂
@@helenw2157 you can only stay there for 28 days. I don’t know if you could get away with it if it’s more rural area I did find a woodland that’s 27 acres but I’m 35K short. I don’t know if you can get planning permission, but if you become a coal burner or have poultry, you might be able to.

Can tell this chap doesn't enjoy conforming to someone elses plan. 👍Brilliant
😂..He is dead right. Years ago, I had a school teacher yell at me , " Christ, why do you always have to go against the grain? " . I took it as a compliment 😂😂
Everything he has done, we did but in Africa. We couldn't afford to pay utilities and levies and transport etc
Now we only have a monthly cost of internet and dried goods as we setup properly.
The peace we feel not having the stress of bills every month is incredible. Yes the life is more labour intensive but being outside most of the day feels so great.
The only thing we have to spend is time, how we spend that, is all that truly matters.
I'm so happy to be able to give my son life closer to the Earth.
This video was so encouraging!! ❤
I'm sooooo happy to see there's still a scintilla of independence in the English soul! You are a truly wise man.
Nailed it - all we really have is family, friends and time....
He’s living the way we all should be.
Thanks for keeping the swearing in, I know swearing isnt for everyone, but its such a human way to add something extra to an expression.
Lucky folks, I wish them well.
20 years younger, I'd be looking for a similar set-up,
plugged into the NHS now and knacked before I wake up in the mornings, don't get old ... 😅😂🤣😊 ... keep smiling 👍
If off grid living were only for the young and muscular, it is a bit unfortunate init. But that’s not how human society evolved to be. So yeah, we need to do a lot more thinking/ discussing/ acting in terms of diversity of skills and experience in homesteading communities.
good to see he's been able to do it without mindlessly spending money on everything and sensibly gather and build things that they need and live happily
yeah this build is a realistic one.if you watch grand designs, anyone on it that builds an "off grid" home, there final costings are something ridiculous like 800k 😂
What a man ,he has detached himself from all the nonsense from life .Behind every great man there is a greater woman as they say❤.

The words are great woman, not a greater woman.
I'm off-grid here in Finland. Not having monthly bills is the best.
This is taking 'off-grid' to a whole new level! Spectacular! Gorgeous open planned home, beautiful setting/surroundings. This video will make a lot of people reevaluate 'how' to live a better life without buying into the matrix. To me it's a no brainer. Standard of living is dropping drastically. What better wat to live! PS very talented artist!

Bloody awesome mate..what a huge achievement getting out of the trap.
How did you get planning permission?
Also what is heating the bedrooms ect? You said about the gas bottles but no plumbing pipes. Just wondering
Most people will never do it because they've been brainwashed to believe they have to have insurance on everything and "healthcare". In the U.S., that is what keeps people trapped in the system and willing to risk their lives to keep their jobs when the mandates happened. Few have the mindset to trust Our Creator for all we need and not worry about man-made systems of control. They think they're buying safety and giving up their freedom.
I love how Paul speaks, short & sweet with a nice twang of humour, guy is brimming with personality. The off grid life or even just country life does a lot for being happy
We did all of this exactly, in Tasmania Australia, six years ago. It's the best life. I agree with your statement about how everything comes from "the hill", and you end up never wanting to leave it. We have firewood, clean spring and rain water, some of the cleanest air on the planet, and solar we have set up ourselves very cheaply. The animals and gardens provide nearly all of our clean and healthy food. We never want to leave. We still socialize all we want, and maintain all the privacy as well. Friends and family don't all "get it", until they visit for a few days. You just have to be handy and willing to make the effort.
Given that the regulator for energy just announced the raise in prices for gas, and electricity, for the coming winter season, this family is living the dream. Would be nice to get more information on how they got planning permission, which is the cancer in the UK when it comes to buying a small holding, and building one’s own home. Hats Off!!! This is a very nice build, some cost numbers on the house, out buildings, septic systems, and solar would be nice.
No solar..wind turbines for north europe
Try living in the Peak district and applying for planning permission,,,🤔🤔🇬🇧🇬🇧
key part is planning not the most exciting video but would be very intrested to see a rouund up of how everyone got planning permission for there homes.
Regarding cost, sounds like you need £140k plus enough to build a house, solar system, and buy and keep two horses, and a generator for a third of the year
Yeah I'm real suspicious of how much info they HAVENT included. How did they get planning permission? How did they secure the funding for all this? Nothing adds up.
The lifestyle he just explained all coming from “ The Hill “ is what I have always thought actual life was supposed to be lived . Absolutely Love this Thank You so very much for sharing 🙏🏻😊
And Thank You so very much for making this video 🙏🏻😊
Thank you Paul and your family for giving us the privilege of showing us how hard you have all worked to be as free and independent as possible. Bravo ❤❤❤

Best thing I've watched for years !! well done everyone involved ✌
Thanks Andy 🙌🏼😊 glad you enjoyed it
Im so jealous of this family, wish my family had this luxury. Im travelling for work, working 5 days a week, busting chops to keep food in the fridge and the bills paid.
This is insane, and i love it.
Totally agree with Paul. I got out 15 years ago seeing the way things were going. I couldn’t afford to do this in the UK so went to Europe. Am also 100% off grid, threw out the TV, grow most of my food, etc. It’s true about becoming part of the land and it’s true how happy that makes you.
Changing the water filters can be a challenge during the winter. It's best to plant fruit/ nut trees as soon as you can. Don't plant one type of tree I have apples cherries, plums, walnut and sweet chestnut. I think it is better to get a range that can burn wood for heat and cook food. The grey water can water the trees. My poly tunnel provides me with the more exotic foods.

Fantastic. In a world of selfishness and stupidity, what you are doing and the way you describe it are wonderfully refreshing. My wife and I live in a similar way in western Brittany and it makes sense to us, also. I woke up when I came here nine years ago and have learned so much since that I couldn't learn in my cramped house in England. Like you, we have found that being forced to live with the seasons and in harmony with nature is so rewarding. I think you made a really mature decision doing what you did and wish you and your family all the best in the years to come.
What a lovely sensible man.
We can very much relate to Paul and his family!
We bought our 11 acres originally thinking we would connect to the grid. After living in a shed for 2 years and living with a very basic solar system the thought was… we can do this! The thought was cemented when we got a quote to connect to the grid was $50,000. More than being in solar power. It’s a no brainer really.
We haven’t looked back since.
Love living in our Modern Off Grid home.
Were coming up on 4 years in, and feel we couldve been further along. We have spring water and wood heat, and a propane tank for cooking and hot water. Were taking the porck roof off in the next month, and starting to plan the solar. We are hoojed to the grid here, but we've had to rely on a gas generator several times this summer.
Very smart guy indeed. This is the dream. It is exactly what I am working towards. I love seeing stories of others who have done it so this episode has been truly special for me. Thank you.
Agreed! He's got it all right!
Thanks for watching, glad you really enjoyed this episode and got something out of it 🙌🏼😊
lol You're terrific ! Your comments about "becoming a bit more Pagan." and "becoming part of the Hill" are exactly right..and that IS what Real Living is all about. You are living exactly as Everyboyd Should be living. Kudos to you and your lovely family !
Surely people should decide for themselves how they want to live.
@@Khazandar yes but people should understand the consequences of their actions. If you go to a local food fair and buy a locally grown marrow that's good, you're doing good, buying local produce. But if you drove the mile and a half to get there in a 5.0L diesel Range Rover, it's not so good.

His point about time not being for sale is literally on the money and spending time with those you love is everything and more as you hit your 40s and later stages of life. Maximum respect Paul.

how is he, or you, free? He still relies on bottled gas and petrol to run his heating and backup genny. He relied on the system to provide everything he used to build his house. I'm also assuming he is paying council tax and income tax/NI. Not knocking the guy, or others that do this, but the impression people have that they are free of "The System" is plain wrong
@@jra55417 Yes you are quite right, everything costs,
I actually live in France, my yearly French rates bill is €347, My electric is now free, I'm on solar and lithium, I use about 4 gas bottles a year at €37 a bottle to run my cooker and my water heater, my heating is free as I cut my own firewood, I do pay for mains water which is just under €100 a year, I do my own sewage via a septic tank,

This has been the best of these kind of videos till now! In a few months time my wife, 2 year old son and 4 months old baby daughter, our Golden Retriever Iroh and me will move to our farm that we're rebuilding. We will be off grid for water and (hopefully really soon) will be off grid for electricity. Our ground is 7,5 hectares (Belgium) or 18,5329 acres.
I want to live without TV (except for these kind of videos that I can watch on my phone, or the occasional movie night). But I can't force it on my wife. Our life's today in the system with this overload of media is not easy. We need to go back to a more natural way of living.
I think you have the right idea Paul. And I am working towards this myself thanks to the makers of this video for its content and the quality of it. Also thank you Paul for taking the time to share your home and a bit of your life and letting people know they can do this themselves.
Respect to this man for being sensible and showing what it really means to „live“! He has a beautiful functional home, a breathtaking view and quality of life most people can only dream of.
When he mentioned how these last few years have changed him by re-igniting his intuition due to his eating and drinking from the land, and the cycle of life connected to it, it confirmed my belief that in order to really thrive, reconnecting is the only way. Gaia has much to give, but we need to be open and not abuse her.
This is such an inspiring video and will give many people food for thought regarding their life choices! ❤
This guy gets it. Brilliant to see people living outside of the system and to be so happy because of it.
The system is bs. Bills have already been paid through government contracts, with tax money. Energy companies produce pieces of paper, that’s all. We are not a legal name or address.

As many people have commented. Planning permission, how?
My wife and I were flatly refused any planning permission to build a house adjacent to her Dad’s house in a corner of his land. There was no discussion. Powys Council rules. Rural area, no new building.
It still annoys me, though it was twenty years ago. Our lives would have been completely different. Not that we’ve had bad lives, but it would have been so different.
I believe he’s gone down the route of replacing a caravan. He said the guy before him lived on site in a caravan, if he did that for ten years, you can get a lawful development certificate, people then leverage that to replace the caravan with a house. A caravan can be replaced with a caravan of any size up to 20m x 6.8m so it’s saying to the council, I can legally do that, what’s worse a massive caravan here or a home that is smaller and blends with the natural environment. The council will regularly pick the latter
It very much depends on your local council. My family explored this a few years ago and were told that there was no chance of getting planning permission from malvern hill district council but if we could find a plot a few minutes down the road in herefordshire it would be fairly straightforward.
@@joshua92jeffery Yes I our issue was a blanket policy by Powys. Despite speaking to the town mayor and other councillors, nothing could be done.

I love seeing how people in the UK manage to live off grid in this highly restricive country. This guy is obviously highly intelligent and has absolutely smashed it!
Oh. My. GOD! --- That is just about the most amazing, wonderful, incredible story I've ever heard. And again, he's absolutely correct in everything he says. The 'time' thing especially but the bullshit you get from the service providers and building a connection with the land. ------ Mind, BLOWN!
Great comment Martin! Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙌🏼😊 thanks for watching
Time is precious, waste it wisely
Really impressive. Well done. And that the authorities allowed it.
Not being crushed by the council is actually the weirdest part of this story.
This man is so wise and I loved his telling of how you get more Pagan and start to get intuitions and inklings and see things you’ve never seen before when you live that close to nature. Also loved his comment about becoming part of the hill as you drink the natural water and veg your sustenance from the land. That’s why people were much more intelligent in the past.
Been saying for years that the more complex our society becomes with tech/politics/work, the more we will yearn for our roots to emerge. We’re made to struggle a bit, but by working the land and caring for our families-not by working for some company making someone else richer than we could ever dream. We need opportunities to breathe, to make connections, to build/create. We need to feel free again.
Fear of the unknown is the greatest obstacle because they have us all brainwashed to think we can’t survive, let alone thrive without modern amenities. Time to escape the matrix.
Lovely guy, all the best of luck to him and his wonderful family, and so pleased they teach their son at home because the poor darlings are so corrupted in the schooling system now he is very lucky he got planning permission not always allowed
Honestly, it 's got to be said you're absolutely brilliant. Your life with your family, your surroundings and the freedom, what you've created together is a paradise. Fresh air, beautiful scenery, all the animals and then living hand in hand with Nature and all it has to offer plus giving your children the chance to experience first hand the changes the four seasons of the year present us. The brilliant colours of Autmn, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness or the full glory of hearing the skylarks and other indigenous birds and insects. No millionaire could be more content with all his material worldly possessions than this man with his family and the wonderful rural home he's built for them. Absolutely magnificent thanks very much for allowing us to share your story and experiences. Best wishes to you and your lovely family.
He ends with a hope we enjoy his story. The time off grid has given him the gift of perceiving his OWN story, unlike the rest of humanity waiting for the media to tell you what your story should be. Time alone with your own, unique spirit is amazing.
You realy shouldve asked him more about planning.

This video blessed me so much! I was feeling a bit off today and didn't know why. I watched this video and felt an incredible peace, and felt like almost everything in this video needs to be my goal! Thank you Sir! Yahweh bless you and your family!
Absolutely beautiful home and lands. I wasn't surprised that one is an artist as the interior is stunning - should be an interior decorator.
What a lovely Man with such wise words . Love the way he describes his connection to the land and his consequent happiness . Very happy for him and his family .
I’m speechless, just incredible! Know exactly how we need to be living asap, thanks for all your great eye opening content🙏
Absolutely fabulous :) This sort of semi-autonomous living is something that more of us should embrace again.
It's been a near life-long dream to have built up a village of our own, surrounded by friends with the skills we need to, as a community, handle most things. Sadly, I have reached old age without that ever flowering from more than a pipe dream and most of those I would have gathered around us have now passed on.
But this fellows philosophy is one I fully recognise and agree with ... and seeing someone making the dream happen is wonderful.
He would be tickled pink to know that many people out there like me for example are incredibly jealous of his idyllic and sufficient lifestyle. The house is just perfect. No telly is a bit harsh but if your family is as busy as his, the telly is not necessary. I know the children will be better for it.
Many a true word. I live in a similar (nearly)off grid place just outside the Lake District and agree totally
what interests us is how these places got planning permission. im assuming this one was for having livestock that needs tending to.
@dantheman6698 He mentioned that he learned that his great grandfather owed the land next to his ! His ancestors have a long history in his area. Then he said he grew up in the countryside. So, regarding getting perimission to build etc. I am sure they knew his was a long time resident already !
@@augustasimone9323 for planning permission all of that is irrelevant, they deny for everything they possibly can

As another family who lives off grid, I completely agree with your theory in life. You can't buy time for sure and your family is your most valuable thing in life. You mentioned that people think you become disconnected living like that...I disagree. You are more connected to the truly important things in life. Great place you have. Thanks for sharing.
People who have never given up any of their conveniences don't understand why we live off grid. And work a little harder to live so simply. Knock on wood I've been off grid for 11 years now and wouldn't go back to a "regular life".
An adorable young man. The world needs more such men, such families. May they be blessed.
Paul is simply inspiring,absolutely fantastic.
Your exactly right, I was only saying that to my older sister this morning, that when you are out in nature, growing your food being one with the land that definitely opens you up intuitively to everything around you..
Good for you and your family, I love your set up.
I thought it was funny when you said about paying them to connect you and then you get bills for the privilege 😂😂😂
I was really surprised when you said about the gas central heating, I said to myself it must cost a fortune with does gas bottle, I couldn't believe when you said how long 1 bottle last for 🙈🙈
That's brilliant 👏👏👏👏it my dream to do the same. I grow a good bit of own fruit and vegetables but I want to be completely self reliant some day...
👍😉🇨🇮☘️Eire
Brilliant fella, brilliant ethos, brilliant video ... thank you Paul 🙏
Absolutely fantastic seeing you going back to your roots. I am only working two hours a day for printed paper and the rest of the time I am dealing with our little farm, making fire wood, cheese, meat and taking care of the kids with me wife. Fantastic to see that there are people like you (+family) around and it gives me hope in those crazy times. God bless you and your family.
Really enjoyed your views on life Paul, so true. We have our own smallholding in East Devon, goats, sheep, chickens and horses.
We are still working on the off grid part, but this program has inspired me to keep going. Brilliant well done 👍
Really enjoyed this - what a fabulous set up ❤
But I wish we found out how he got planning permission, because sadly thats the part that stops this dream becoming a reality for most of us.
@Bluebell 117 He mentioned that ge grew up in the country with his parents and when he learned this property was for sale from his Mum he bought it. He further said that when he bought his land he learned that his Great Grandfather owned the Land next to his ! I am sure the Permission people already knew he and his ancestors were long time residents in this area.

Ich finde das Haus cool mit dem "off grid".
Ein toller Typ mit einer tollen Familie !
Er hat alles richtig gemacht.
Love this, the guys cracked it! We finally afforded to buy a house after years of renting & saving last year. felt really pressured as we are in mid 30's with 2 children not sure why but i really feel so deflated with the whole getting on the property ladder now and the thought of being well into our 60s by the time its payed is just quite depressing! Been watching alot of videos latley on alternative living and im hoping this is our future route 🤞🏼
Ps - love the video's 👌🏼
WOW this really spoke to me. What a lifestyle for the family so close to and integrated with land and Nature.
How refreshing to hear someone acknowledge the almost ''pagan'' lifestyle that creeps up onto folk who leave the urban madness and as they shed the layers of control they revert back to living as one with nature as much as possible. The pragmatic yet caring way he approaches the killing of deer etc is something no one usually speaks about when it comes to living off grid.
