The ford 7.3 uses engine oil to open and close the fuel injectors. Also some of the diesel might have gelled a little bit. It might be a good idea to get a small generator to top off your batteries and if you get into really cold weather were your truck wont start, you can plug in your block heater to warm the engine. Probably wont need it most the time but it would be cheap insurance. Another great video and I really want a truck camper after watching your videos.

Yes... And add a good anti gel fuel additive.

El cheapo generator from harbor freight is about $180, a 100 amp marine battery from Walmart about $100. I would carry the extra battery, fully charged. You can run your heater off of it if needed or just for cold starts. Those generators do work, but longevity is an issue. I know a buddy who had one for van camping and went through a whole bunch of them, he got the warranty extensions and just kept replacing them. A 100 watt thin solar panel can be directly connected to the battery, just monitor with a volt meter. You can easily calculate how "full" the battery is from it's voltage at rest state(several hours after charging). Keep those batteries in the 8-13.6 volt range for optimal usage. Charge controller are fairly cheap if you don't want to do math and manage them directly.

Yes the "surging" of the engine is normal on a cold start. It should clear up within a minute or so. Some cylinders may not be hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel. Add anti gel to the fuel in cold weather or buy "winter diesel" fuel. If you don't have louvers on your radiator, & it gets below 0°F I'd cover the outside of the grill with cardboard or a vinal cover to limit the cold air rushing over the motor & help the engine keep its heat up. Diesels run cold even on a hot summer day, so in the winter they need help to stay warm.

Freezing rain occurs when the layer of freezing air is so thin that the raindrops do not have enough time to freeze before reaching the ground. Instead, the water freezes on contact with the surface, creating a coating of ice on whatever the raindrops contact.
Sleet is simply frozen raindrops and occurs when the layer of freezing air along the surface is thicker. This causes the raindrops to freeze before reaching the ground. Just an FYI :)

This vid reminded me of my husband's years in MN and SD loving his cross-country skiing. Many would wear an SEMI-EMPTY BACKPACK and attach their Snowshoes to it. A safety feature for those times when your skis might malfunction or grow legs and walk away. Even a short hike can be brutal on your feet without Snowshoes with as a Plan B. Something to maybe consider when you're out there alone since you already have Snowshoes.

It was really cool to see me running cross country alone in a cold snowstorm.
It must have been scary and lonely alone, but from the viewer's perspective, the magnificent snowy scenery around it also shows the beauty of winter alone.
The world covered in white snow is like a painting, and it seems to express both the solitude and beauty of winter trekking alone.
This is a really touching video.
We support you from Korea America.
    Have a good day.

I no longer can do it but enjoy watching others like you doing it.
These days, I'm a fair weather camper with my wife.
Can't wait for Spring to come now.
In Utah, we call this type of snow Corn Snow.

Good return video! Normal Ford 7.3 COLD start noise……get some Hot Shot diesel Extreme and throw it in the tank ever couple fill ups. Stops the fuel from gelling up in extreme cold weather or if sitting in the tank. Also since you were away for a few weeks fuel could have collected little bit of “gunk (algae believe it or not) ” in the tank. If you go away or are out of town again add some Stable-Store to the tank. This works great on auto, truck and marine diesels when storing for the winter or extended periods……
    Welcome back to USA.

You should consider installing a diesel heater. You'll be nice and toasty, will be able to set the temp on a digital monitor and can even tap in to your trucks fuel tank if you wanted to.
Might also consider a small generator you can plug your block heater into on those cold winter mornings. Makes for a much easier diesel startup.
