1 year on our Off-Grid Homestead in Tennessee
One year ago, we pulled our van home onto 32 acres of raw land in rural Tennessee to build into our Off-Grid homestead. It's been a wild ride of ups and downs from our cabin to our goats. Here's to another year of working towards our dream!

It sounds to me like you're making problems for yourself. Hey hey look over here look look look look look look inviting trouble to yourself. You only deal with problems if someone lodges an objection. Until you receive the objection or the notice you do as you please. It's only if you want to do something like insure your shed then it becomes an official problem as insurance probably won't cover it. Easy solution don't insure it

hey? Zero, definition and the State’s attorney cannot or will not give you a reasonable explanation of that term or requirement. So, this is how you go about it. Take de construct a segment of each wall and be sure to spread the work over the whole of the each wall all. Document the work. Both tearing down and rebuilding it. So remove the windows on the one wall and a couple pieces of siding. Then reinstall them. Nothing states you can’t deconstruct and then immediately rebuild. Remember take pitchers and no video. If video keep it short and sweet. Be sure to do some electrical inside, as well as some plumbing that will suck, but will actually make the deconstruction count. Be sure to remove a circuit breaker or two from the circuit breaker box to show electrical tear down. Ask the electric company to place a cut power temp for your records for a few days and leave a temp service if on electric grid. But the idea is deconstructing the house just enough that you can show work and then fix it. Document your work with pictures and videos (minimally as possible) that way you have evade of the house being deconstructed and rebuilt on the land by your hand in the state. Just never mention the amount of deconstruction you did and if under oath just tell the judge with your Lawer present you did only what was described to us a s the amount of required deconstruction under the law as stated by the State Attorney who the depart head sent use to for all the necessary legal and code requirements for this law that we were bound to. As he was the only authority on the law who knew anything about it and could answer any questions about. His answer to the amount of deconstruction was he didn’t know and that was not determined. So, it was left to us. In good faith with the state, of a hidden and vague law that no one knew about in our county, or in the state except for the attorney, and he even had to find what everyone was talking about. We deconstructed everything wall, electrical, and the plumbing. We present these pictures as proof and evidence of the work we did. As no mention of an inspector was given and the building was originally produced by Amish craftsmen. The wood is milled on their land and doesn’t contain any commercial stamping on it. With that you should be Scot free. I would also inform the Amish builder of your situation so others don’t get caught in this situation. Who knows. Maybe they will come up and help you do the deconstruction and reconstruction in a day or two. You might also want to take a few shingles off and on both sides of the house.

It comes down to the definition of "living in". In our area they define it as cooking and sleeping in it. So, if u were to cook and sleep elsewhere then U could de everything short of that in it.

If I understand you correctly, they will not let you live in the structure because it was not inspected by the county/state?? Is there ant reason the structure would fail inspection?? It seems like you could just get it inspected and you're good to go. I didn't know there were still parts of the country that let a structure be built and NOT subject it to inspection to meet code.

Option One: Talk to your state and federal congressman and senators... Odds are your vote for them will get you a pass due the hidden regs... Option Two: Are Mobil Homes acceptable ? If yes, simply elevate the structure and attach axel, leaf springs, and wheels underneath... If the structure is designated as too wide, simply install affore mentioned apparatus twice as a double wide... Option Three: Bargain with the manufacturer of the structure to accept a return of the current structure for the materials to build an exact copy... They won't lose a dime, and they can resale the current structure... Note: Additionally, you can negotiate for their crew to build a new structure on site... Although that will most likely cause additional expense... Option Four: Do Option Three, but smoke a ton of beef and make a barrel of potato salad and coleslaw and throw a barn raising party... Oh, and don't forget the beer, a few kegs of different types ought to do the trick... Note: Being in Tennessee, you definitely don't want any Buttwiper... ~~~ And then there's Option Five: Fence in the area and train yourself some badass guard dogs... Just Sayin'... ~~~ Retired Structural Engineer & General Contractor... V... Footnote: There are over 5 million government employees across the U.S. ... They wouldn't have a paycheck if it wasn't for all this regulation crap... Fact: All government officials have set their sons and daughters up with regulation jobs that pay's them over a six-figure tax dollar salary... These even include government instructions on how to use a screwdriver, a hammer, a hand saw, etc, etc, etc... This is not a joke... It's a fact....

First time viewer and tiny house builder. It’s hogwash that you couldn’t be living in the cabin and had to get a camper and stay in it for the winter. I always consult people to never try staying in a camper in winter weather. They are terribly insulated as you know now. Myself, id been staying in the cabin with mineral wool insulation in the walls. Reading between the lines, evidently the legalities is what kept you from that. Using the word, “ home” Is key to a lot of this. Studio is even better when they get real picky. If you’re ever asked publicly if you’re living there full time the answer is always no. Privately on your own land we know what happens. I’m shocked out in nowhere in the country there were any issues at all. Only in city limits are there minimum square footage requirements per person. I’ll sub and see what the future holds. The property is awesome!

Bolt it to a concrete foundation and then it's no longer removable and portable. Also how do they prove it was built off site? Sounds like you should've let sleeping dogs lie and not contacted the county or make a video about it being illegal.

I worked in Real Estate Law in Washington State. Perhaps if you pull off anything underneath that makes it readily transportable ie: wheels, axles, and tonge; and put on some kind of foundation then maybe as in Wa. state it becomes a permanent structure. Hoping the best for you.

Everything in Government no matter if it's county, state, or country, it's all a double standard and makes absolutely zero sense to a normal person. This goes from your shitbox rural community to your overpopulated cities. If someone says their state is exceptional to this, they're full of it. Every state in a nutshell, sucks because of their double standards.
